Watched this original cell block H with my mother years ago. Loved it then, love it now.
The way Bea and the Freak talk over each other as they argue coming up the corridor is a remarkable piece of television production - a real master stroke ... a type of 'polyphony' dialogue.
The Freak in Prisoner is definitely more blunt and intimidating. In Wentworth she's intimidating in a whole other way. Both of them are scary! Haha but amazing characters.
Wentworth Joan is a female equivalent to Hannibal Lecter..without the cannibalism...

Back in the 90’s we were changing trains in Peterborough England to Leeds and there she was smoking on the platform Bee, me my mum and 2 sisters and brother all couldn’t believe it as we all watched it with mum. She got on the same train so my sisters approached her to ask if it was really her and to which she smiled and said yes. We got her autographed unfortunately didn’t have a camera but it was such a lovely experience as were use to stay up late on a Thursday night to watch it!

Val Lehman wanted out of Prisoner at the time to pursue bigger, better acting opportunities in the early 1980's. None of which ever happened for her.

Really stuid and then they randomly say she died in a fire at Barnhurst? What the hell was the oint of that? The new writers at the end really sucked.
She never asked to be killed off, she asked to kill the freak but as herself and Lizzie were leaving they couldn't afford to lose another big character
It kind of reminds me of Shelley Long from Cheers. She thought that she could have a successful Career in Movies but it didn't pan out. Ted Danson's Career in Movies didn't do well either. To Fans they were Sam Malone & Diane Chambers and it was hard for people to see them otherwise. Although Ted did well as Becker as well as the Angel in the new NBC Series, they nor Val Lehman didn't do as well as they thought.
Hearing Lizzie cry like that omg 😢 their characters were best mates on the show since it’s inception.

Lived in Sydney as a child from 81 to 83. Used to watch this, Son's and daughters, Dr who, Paul Hogan show, Monkey magic, Sounds. Skippy, and a show with the guy from the Skyhooks. And The Young ones.

Ged Woods I’ve watched both and love both Lizzy’s but I love the remake Lizzy more because she had morals and she only lagged to stop the girls from overdosing on drugs and to put a killer behind bars.

Judy returning back to prison at almost the same time Bea departed somewhat filled the void for me. Betty Bobbitt was a standout. I'm currently watching the series from the start (since childhood when it first aired), and I'm finding many inconsistencies, including Meg's son leaving the show so early on and then returning years later, with no mention of his pregnant girlfriend, Bea's kidney transplant never mentioned again (never see her take any antirejection (immunosuppressant) medications post surgery) and Doreen's long absence and more strangely never spoken about again until Lizzie receives a letter from her from out of the blue (and Bea later escaped with Nola's money and sought out Doreen's place). I'm also finding it strange that some actors were used to play more than one role, including a young Stefan Dennis (3 roles) and more notable, Lesley Baker, best known for playing Monica Ferguson returned to play the character of 'Tinker'.

This was a huge hit in the US/Yankeestan.As a kid, I had a huge crush on Queen Bea.I pictured her as a latter day (Aussie) Boudicca.A big,badass,brainy redhead.
It started going downhill when Bea & Lizzie leave the show

the resignation of lehman shook the producers you have to remember, they had expected her to return and banked on being able to buy her back but lehman wasn't budging. They didn't give her the big exit as they thought she'd be back.

They really could have given her a better fitting exit to the character. Very disappointing and lame. You just couldn't believe Bea would let Joan have the last word.

It's all Val's fault. She got too big for her britches and thought she'd become a movie star...which never materialised.
The writers were stuck: how do you make a female prisoner leave a prison show without being killed off. They could only transfer her characters away to another prison, to keep the storyline open for her returning in future.
And in the new show she just fucking died I'm pissed

That was Val's wish to the producers of the show. But they weren't going to hear of it! The Freak was their money maker for the next 3 years.

proper sad..but the character deserved a better send of than that..
they basically sacked Val as she wanted to be paid what she felt she was worth.
PCHP struggled a bit without Bea, then they killed her off screen and basically filled an episode with her best bits.
As much as I love this scene I’d have loved an extra one with Bea in reception still arguing with Joan right up until she’s put in the van and driven out of the gate.
That would have been two laughs and a half.
An even better scenario would've been if Channel 10 paid Fiona Spence (Vera) a heap of $$$ to briefly return and do a Cameo appearance involving Bea arriving at Barnhurst and meeting with their Governor in her office. Old friend's reunited 😄 Bea's last dialogue being something along the lines of "Bloody Vera!"

I thought wentworth detention centre was a maximum security jail. Why was it that bea was sent to barnhurst which was a medium security yet for attacking an officer you would of thought she would of been sent to blackmoor what a crap ending of a leed character.
Blackmoor didn't exist then. Early in the series, Erica Davidson did threaten to send Bea Smith to a 'larger and much tougher' prison.

I agree,Poor Ending for a great Character,Bea should have left when Sandy Edwards arrived,she could have been paroled on compassionate grounds and gone to live with either Eddie and Marilyn or Monica in Queensland, while waiting for a kidney donor,and leaving Sandy as Top Dog to battle the Freak.

I thought the wrong decision was made killing Bea off in a fire at Barnhurst. Of course when we saw it in the UK, it had finished years before but I went crazy (idiot!)🤣🤣🤣🤣
Bea WOULD have killed The Freak...she would not have cocked it up and that is what should have happened. However the producers could not afford to lose Val and Maggie.
Kev L I think it was on purpose. She knew what The Freak would do and knew that this was her only way to keep her from walking free. She planned the perfect sentence for the freak.
Daniel Vetter Val Lehman actually wanted her exit to be Bea killing Ferguson but that was not an option, especially as Sheila Florance (aka Lizzie) had also quit and was to leave the show shortly afterwards.
Bea should have killed The Freak in the final episode, either on screen or off screen.
I think the reason bea came up with the idea of her exit to be killing the freak was because she had experience in coming up with amazing storylines on the show and proved to play the part extraordinarily well! Like her amnesia storyline she came up with the idea herself and she played the part so well I was surprised even for vals standards. I think they would have let beas exit to be killing the freak if only they could afford to loose Maggie too but they couldn't. But I could imagine that val would have came up with an amazing plot of how her exit could have been after killing the freak it would have been so well and they would have played the part amazing. And beas exit could have been were she kills the freak and is transferred to blackmoor instead of barnhurst because she murdered a screw so she'd have to go to a tougher prison, but the women from wentworth would cheer her on and always keep her space warm as top dog for doing the best deed in the prison and even the tough women from blackmoor will back down from bea and welcome her as top dog because of what she did by killing ferguson because they've all heard of her and how unbeatable she was, and for bea to beat her would have been the strongest thing a prisoner could do!! It would have been good to see something like this, obviously after bea gets top dog in blackmoor that would have been her exit while she's on the steam press or has the women standing around her clapping. I'd of loved something like this it would have been interesting, it made me angry the original exit because it made it look like ferguson had won so easily, why have her transferred without having to fight the authorities? It would have been easier to transfer her after the fire when bea nearly killed her. And why transfer her to barnhurst? You'd think if bea has just brutally bashed an officer(ferguson made it look worse) then they wouldn't send her from a maximum security prison to a minimum security open prison with prisoners like marie winter and janie and her mates which would cause trouble which is why marie was transferred to wentworth abit after bea left because they needed to be separated why not send bea? And everyone knew that bea and vera despised eachother just as much as ferguson and bea did! I know val left the show but there were so many opportunities were it looked like she could come back, I also would have thought ferguson would have sent bea to barnhurst because that's the easy life compared to wentworth. Last time bea was in barnhurst before the amnesia she was truly loving the life before the mushrooms but only because she was drugged, she was so glad to be up in the country having the quiet life. It was mentioned how amazing bea was at barnhurst after her death but for all of her time there it was never mentioned weather she was top dog or not?? I know she could of been but marie had everyone in the prison on side because they were bitches like her and loved drugs so I don't know, I hope bea did take down marie but it was never mentioned the only thing said about bea and marie is that they needed to be separated so marie ended up in wentworth. But maybe bea did take marie down and was top dog and thats why marie was transferred because she's a drug dealer and vera probably wanted the prison run smoothly with her tight security and bea was probably a better bet because she's not into drugs and keeps the women into line and out of trouble. Idk I've gone abit of subject but I love talking about this show I love it!!!! 😂❤
@@joecasey5213 Eventually Marie Winter ended up in Blackmoor although we never saw her when Rita was transferred there later in the series. Blackmoor had not been 'invented' when Val was in the show as we only first heard of if when Myra was Top Dog, which is why Bea was transferred to Barnhurst, but that was unbeliveable because as you say it was a lower security prison and Bea had already escaped from Wentworth!
Ever since The Freak arrived at Wentworth Prison Bea Smith battled against her tooth & nail until episode 400 when she was unceremoniously shanghaied in front of her best mate Lizzie (the late great Sheila Florence), the show wasn't the same without Queen Bea for a while until Myra Desmond came back into the picture & became top dog for a long while until terrorists shot her dead in cold blood in front of all her mates!, afterwards the show dragged on again without a good top dog until tough bikie Rita Conners arrived, meanwhile The Freak always got away with corruption ever since she arrived & had a few close shaves from getting caught but was always 1 step ahead by covering her tracks until the final episode 692 when she was tricked by Rita Connors faking her death from cancer which gave The Freak the opportunity to find & grab a hidden bag of stolen payroll money then finally caught by the police!, I would've loved to have seen an extended alternate ending to episode 692 with The Freak's arrival at Barnhurst Prison & freaked out when greeted by non other than Bea Smith who'd secretly survived the Barnhurst fire?... THAT would had been the perfect conclusion to the entire series of Prisoner!

felt gutted when bea was killed in burnhurst off screen so when the bunhurst prisoners came to wentworth and myra was killed instead of bea being back as top dog we had the nora era which was boring bea was a better top dog than boring nora flynn
Furguson was No Better then the Inmates!!! She was Psychotic Too and I dk why Bea got herself back in there? She didn’t need to kill her ex It was her own actions that got her there Unfortunately. She killed her exes mistress and in front of others and missed out on being with her daughter Debbie &Yrs&Yrs of her life. Then to get out to have to go back!!! And sadly Furguson kills her but it’s Karma Bea killed adleast two people

Bea was all set to come back to Wentworth later on, but unfortunately her portrayer Val Lehman got a bit too big for her boots...wanted a massive paycheck for her services. The Producers finally got sick of her demands and killed the character off once and for all.

At 3.23 as The Freak closes the prison door you can see the 'wall' to the left shunt to the right a bit. Oh I use to love those wobbly sets. And the wobbly ladies.

Val thought a lot of herself as an actress, but in reality she wasn't as good as all that and she was completely typecast. She stayed too long anyway, I think the riot in Episode 326 should've been her swansong. She was never quite as compelling after that

I don't agree that she was a poor actress (there's quite a few examples which demonstrate how good she could be) but I agree that she wasn't as effective post the fire. I think that was because Joan became a regular.
Before that, they were constantly trying to get rid of the Freak with various attempts but after the fire, it settled into a Bea Vs Joan fued. And that was the new status quo. Whereas previously it was the Bea Smith show, it was now the Bea and Joan show. And by necessity, Bea wasn't all powerful anymore. The same thing happened with Joan. She gradually became more 3 dimensional and you saw her vulnerable side, but the sacrifice for that was that she became less scary and a cartoon villain eventually. Compare Joan's early body searches/midnight walks to later scenes of Joan being put in her place by Minnie et el. The show as a whole lost it's edge in later years.
The show never lost its edge with Joan,until then last year really.There was only so many times she could become governor,or be suspended...She lost a lot of her menace against Rita Connors,because Glenda Linscott was as tall as she was...and the writing was dumbed down,with less credible opposition for her
To write be out was so wrong yo kill her off left me upset Bea should of come back with the eight and it wouldn't of been to hard to have her finally take the freak out it should of been Bea or at least show her showing up at Doreens leading everyone to believe she died but really escaped and everyone looking for one inmate escaping so Noone looking for Bea a simple seen living the us believing Bea goes on and quietly lives out the rest of her life she was there from the start so many ways they could of taken Beabut to kill her off no good worst lazy writing ever

I tried watching the new version of Prisoner or Wentworth as they call it, biggest load of crap. The original prisoner cell block H is brilliant, myself my sister and my pals were all hooked lol. My favourites were Wee Lizzie, Bea, Doreen, Judy and last but not least The Freak . Brilliant..
The new version is more violent and gritty how a prison would be.
