Shark pack attack - Moreton Bay

  • In Moreton Bay yesterday, a tuna ate my lure which was aimed at a mackerel. Then the tuna unusually swam straight at the boat. Why became clear as it was pursued by a pack of 6-8 whaler sharks between 8 and 10 feet long. A shark cut the leader during a near miss and the pack proceeded to chase the now free tuna, which was frantically trying to shelter under the boat. This went on for around a minute, with sharks bumping the boat repeatedly, just long enough to get my phone in time to record the end. My logbook of 30+ years shows shark depredation has occurred in around 6 of my last 7 trips into Moreton Bay. Shark numbers and sizes are also increasing, and the problem is getting out of hand. Moreton Bay sharks are notorious for this behaviour. I believe it’s getting worse.
