Junior is the best! He plays more shit by accident than most play on purpose. This example is full of jazz, but listen to his blues stuff and you'll be blown away. Check out any of his performances here on TH-cam. Show me another so-called blues guitar player who plays anything like this guy and I'll be impressed. Thanks for all the great music Junior!!!!!
This is simply west coast blues, which has grown with lots of jazz influences in the early 40's. Junior, of course, is a phenomenal player but this is JUST great west coast blues guitar playing.
I recently discovered this guy on another channel and surprise surprise, he is a customer of Norm's! Very cool. Love his West coast jazz blues style. Wish I knew more about his custom guitar.
This guy can play authentic blues with the best of them.. but why should anyone relegate themselves to being a strict covers by the book blues guy? Jr incorporates elements from tonnes of different styles. He's trying to do something new with the genre
I have a Harmony H44 Stratotone that is stamped on the back of the headstock Y12 I believe this is one of the early ones made in 1952 Can anyone help me out with info on these rare guitars. Also mine has black tuner knobs which I have not seen in any pics I can find.
I guess Junior spent many hours of his life listening to the great late Bill Jennings. Had the pleasure to open for him one night back in 2005. That's when you suddenly realize that starting playing the guitar has been your biggest mistake in life!
Jazz and blues scales? Do you need me to show you where the 1, the 4, and the 5 are in this piece of music? Yes, it's jazz influenced. Jazz influenced BLUES.
I'm not a purist, but I just can't understand why people like him - astounding musician - are relatively unknown, while shitty rockblues players are selling tons of records, being labeled as "the future of the blues". Yes, I'm talking with Joe Shitamassa in mind. I just can't understand why people are anchored to these rock clichés... there's so much ignorance about the style and the music.
I want to keep Junior in a closet in my basement with an electric collar until he teaches me all his tricks... Sounds extreme but that's how committed I am.
Correct- there isn't a single authentic blues style. So, why are you suggesting that this isn't "authentic" blues? Jazz and Blues share a lot of common ground in their evolution. This is 100% authentic blues. Blues has a variety of forms, including the jazz-influenced west coast / jump style. It's still a blues structure he's playing here. Don't get stuck in a rut with narrow definitions and labeling.
You don't say! I was saying there's more "authentic" blues beside ragtime or country blues, and west coast is one of those. And, a part from that, it's SURELY much more "authentic" than all that shitty rockblues most of the people thinks is blues music. Eric Clapton, SRV, Joe Shitamassa docet.
i think you are basing your ideas on mtv and youtube comments. i think you are missing the vast, silent population of people who love all blues-inspired music, from delta blues bluesmen to the amazing blues-rock musicians that you so readily put down. many of us with a developed ear for good music don't have to be so loudmouth about it. do you realize you are quite ironic when you bash amazing musicians, and then project yourself as a appreciator of all music? good music has no boundaries.
There's no doubt he can play 'blues', what I am saying is this track is very Jazz influenced; especially from 1:20 onward. I'm far from the best guitarist, but have played for 50 years and know jazz and blues and can certainly tell the difference. I checked another of 'Juniors' tracks where he played a far more authentic blues style. Btw, there isn't a single authentic blues style there are many. Try listening to some early artists like Bill Bill Broonzy and you'll understand what I mean.
I'm far from the best guitarist, but have played for 50 years and know jazz and blues scales and can certainly tell the difference. In the main this piece would best be described as Jazz.
sloppy, disjointed, couldn't quite tell what bpm he was playing, seemed to just play a bunch of different riffs that had nothing to do with eachother. Sounded like a dude at guitar center who just got into blues/jazz hoping people will hear him.
Joke's on you, that's just a simple blues form at something between 170 and 180 bpm played so extravagant you weren't even able to recognize it as what it is.
God above, *nothing* sounds quite like one of those old Stratotones. Such a warm tone.

Old School Blues Guitar just tellin' it like it is! ¡Viva Junior!
Junior is among the top GODS of West Coast Jump and Jazz blues. His style is uniquely HIS, and nobody is able to copy him ;-)
Little Charlie Batty
West Coast Blues has a lot of jazzy elements.
love Jr.'s playing and style
This is killer stuff. Jennings, Butler, Grimes, et al.
YEAH MAN - JUNIOR WATSON
One of the greatest living blues players.
Probably THE GREATEST ❤️
One of the very best around
Master!
Love Junior/Senior Watson!
That was great, thanks!

He is Playing what's called "West-Cost Jump"
Junior is as good as it gets in jump Blues!!!
This guy is cool.. own sound and feel... realll coool
The guitar is a Harmony Stratotone H44 model.
Pro tip: you can watch series at flixzone. I've been using them for watching lots of of movies these days.
@Finnegan Alexzander yea, been watching on flixzone for years myself :)
Check out his ‘Hucklebuck’ with Canned Heat. Backed by Fito and of course, the amazing Larry Taylor.
I recently discovered this guy on another channel and surprise surprise, he is a customer of Norm's! Very cool. Love his West coast jazz blues style. Wish I knew more about his custom guitar.
It's a 1950s Harmony H44 Stratotone.
Sick!

Norman you should do a video about Gibson humming birds and doves that are vintage.
😊❤

That record is as hard-core as it gets.
Harmony stratatone
do the Hucklebuck😎
Any guitar is a jazz guitar, if you're brave enough. That guy seems pretty fearless.
I guess Junior spent many hours of his life listening to the great late Bill Jennings.

I think everyone who's debating between jazz/blues/authenticity should shut up and get back in the woodshed.
Absolutely!

totally agree. Daniel Suárez from Lima, Perú. Greetings.
Indeed, SHITAMASSA!!
Because those ppl worshipping JoeBo can’t play, never made it themselves and are rock players who never dug deep into blues.
@@greenwoodmills1381 Joe who?
I know this post dates back 5 years but in answer to your question. It's because the bulk of humanity is fucking clueless. God bless them!!!
Is it true that this guitar has no truss rod?
monange speaks the truth, Bill jennings frowns upon your comments okamasphere/bbaasje
If you knew anything you'd know more than half of jazz is a twelve bar form blues
I want to keep Junior in a closet in my basement with an electric collar until he teaches me all his tricks... Sounds extreme but that's how committed I am.
Willy Mox. I went to the same high school with Junior. But knew him by his first name, Michael. I missed out when he played with Rod Piazza.
Committedly creepy but yeah the dude's a beast I love listening to him

Great playing. However, after a little bit I found myself thinking, hey, sounds like Super Mario...!

So, you do admit it is Jazz influenced, that's all I said.
Authentic blues was born well before the 40's.
sounds like jazz 2 me
sounds like jump blues/west coast blues - jazz influenced, but jazz is coming from the blues anyway so, ya know...
That guitar kinda looks like a les paul
Hmmmm.... I am not alone with my comment, it seems a few here agree with me.
There's a lot of Jazz in that, especially chords.... Nice though, but not sure about it being authentic blues.
"Real blues" my ass
you wouldn't know 'real blues' from eric crapton
Joe Bossanova fanboy I'm guessing.
