Almost 3 years sober myself. Quitting drinking is hands down the best thing I ever did in terms of weight, energy levels, financially and spiritually. Feels like I've lived 2 lives

I love being a non drinker, it was never a problem I just hated being hung over for 2 days every time and being the cause of my own suffering. I did quit smoking cigarettes and marijuana 18 months ago and am free of the addiction is so freeing! Life is good man

I enjoyed this discussion. I took on sobriety since the beginning of April and haven’t looked back since. In fact, I have enjoyed sipping on non alcoholic beverages including Heineken 0 and Becks Blue within moderation (taking into account that calories are hidden in the alternative ingredients). In conclusion, integrating sobriety with intermittent fasting has unequivocally enhanced my weight loss and moved me closer to my target weight. In addition to physical benefits, sobriety and IF have significantly increased my cognitive abilities and clarity on a day to day basis.

I quit alcohol 8 months ago, a month after I turned 26. About 2-3 months in, after I no longer had any interest in getting thrashed on the weekends or in my free time, I fell under a deep depression which I feel a lot of people giving up drinking should be prepared for. That along with intense feelings of anger which last a few weeks after abstinence. A lot of my depression stemmed from the regret of wishing that I had quit earlier, and all the time I wasted in the last 3-4 years making an ass out of myself and nursing hangovers. I realized the last 3-4 years of my life were me leading an unbalanced lifestyle that could only be reordered when my consumption of alcohol, nicotine and caffeine would cease. My memory came back in full and I remembered things I couldn't ever think of when I was a binge drinker. I quit drinking 2 years earlier, when I was 23, for the same exact reason but of course peer pressure was a bitch.

I'm in the same boat here. no problem with substance abuse but drinking just doesn't align with my goals.

"He did not know that the new life would not be given him for nothing, that he would have to pay dearly for it, that it would cost him great striving, great suffering. But that is the beginning of a new story - the story of the gradual renewal of a man, the story of his gradual regeneration, of his passing from one world into another, of his initiation into a new unknown life. That might be the subject of a new story, but our present story is ended."

This video was like a discussion of "high hanging fruit" benefits of ditching alcohol. As stated in the video, I'm sure there are financial/health/experience benefits of cutting out 3-5 drinks but they're far more marginal, especially if you aren't prone to alcoholism. It put things in perspective for me because I'm probably more in the "low hanging fruit" category. While my career and family life are going well, alcohol certainly impacts my sleep. It also leaves me less productive when I drink and less productive when I'm hung over. While people get along with me, I've noticed that it makes me far more thin-skinned. I'm sure I'd be better off without it at this point in my life.

People assume you're an alcoholic cuz you're making statements about "I've been sober since..." Just say you don't drink.
Most people who don't have a dependency problem would just cut down on their drinking to up their productivity. Still drink on their birthday for instance. It definitely cuts down on productivity though: the next day is often a write off and routines are thrown out of whack.

i have never had a problem with alcohol but i drink it very rarely. i drink maybe once every three weeks or so, sometimes less. i dont drink during the week and i dont drink alone. i like the feeling of being drunk with friends and having a good time but i have always been able to stop when i know i'm about to get shitfaced. the thing is i definitely think the uk has a problem with alcohol, as a people we drink too much too often and we definitely need to cut down. this is going to require a big cultural change which im not sure how would be achieved.
