Thank you, this was very informative. I'm in my first year so started learning on my own mistakes already - for the first two months I went "all in" without reading anything about fertilizers and used 20-13-13+MgO mix for bottom feeding (half of amount for younger plants) and no сalcium at all. Lack of calcium is evident now and I started to search for better ratios and recommendations (found many info and NPK calculators on weed growers forums but wanted something more related to peppers).
Looking at your videos I can clearly see that this simple mix is working so I'm gonna try that. Unfortunately the closest thing to 4-18-38 I have here is 3-11-38+4 MgO so I'll probably gonna adjust that with additional fertilizers or recreate Masterblend using basic mineral alternatives and calculator. Anyway I got clear direction to follow now at least.

Still not enough. CaNit is very hygroscopic and will self liquefy at about 50% relative humidity regardless of temperature. Now you could do a battle of the absorbers if you have a big bin that can be sealed tightly and a bunch of scrap drywall but that can be a whole thing of its own and takes a long time. The vacuum seal is probably most practical.

Thanks for taking the time to explain this. I almost bought way too much. I was wondering if you could explain how you use the masterblend for those pepper plants that you have growing. I see some soil there, so they are not hydroponic? Are you using it just to feed the plants, if so how often? Is there anything special with those containers that you are using? Thanks for the tips
Some of the plants were in self watering containers (basically sub irrigated planters), and some were just in potting mix. For both I just added nutrients 2 to 3 times a week. For the self watering, I just filled until the nutrient water ran out the overflow hole. For the regular potted plants, I added until it ran out the bottom.
Very nice video. I use 5 gallon buckets with gamma lids to store. No moisture comes in. Was curious where you get 4-18-38 for less than $1 per pound. Shipped at that price?
Thanks for watching. I bought it at a semi-local distributor/wholesaler (Southern Ag) that happens to sell to the general public. They have great prices, but it's over an hour away, so I try to make it count when I go up there. I got a 50 lb bag of Osmocote 14-14-14 there for 65.00. That amount would cost around 250.00 in big box stores. It pays to go to places like that for bulk items like potting mix, perlite, compost manure, fertilizer, etc... especially if growing more than 20 plants.

Just ordered the 2.5lb kit, does it matter to mix separately? I am asking because some places I read that we are suppose to mix all 3 products separately then mix into one container but in your video you mix all into one, a little confused. Thanks for watching! The medium for peppers in the video is just plain coco coir. To answer your question, if pre-mixing concentrates, you would keep them in separate containers. If mixing a batch to use, mix them one at a time, the MB first, then Epsom Salt, then Calcium Nitrate. I hope that helps. Thanks for the video. Good info for sure. Plants are very nice, but I'm curious - Are you using the 2/1/2 mix for hot peppers as well? Seems like pretty much all peppers, especially the hot ones, would require a much, much higher EC? But granted, your plants look very good, so I'm very curious if you are getting that with literally a low 1.4/1.6 EC like that? If so, that's awesome, as I'd assume you are saving a bunch in nutes, but you definitely got me curious...Thanks again, and happy growing!
Same strength throughout. Super hots don't really need more than other peppers. It's the genetics that makes them hotter.

I do 12/6/12 for 5 gallons and the EC is 1.6. Plants seem to love it so I don’t see the need to increase it.

I recently started an indoor hydroponic system (Trecaan brand) and was wondering if I could use this blend to add nutrients to my leafy greens and strawberries. If so, what would my watering schedule be or can I fill the reservoir with this blend? Thank you!
You could fill the reservoir with this. For greens, I would adjust the strength down to 1.6/.8 instead of 2.0/1.0. Also for the Trecaan system, when refilling, only fill back about 3/4 full. That seems to be the best for root health.

Thank you Peter. Very helpful. Few questions though. How often do you use this feeding solution? and how do you deliver it to your double bucket system? I mean bottom feeding or just from the top. How much of the gallon you feed each plant? In between , do you just water with pH controlled tab water or you just use this solution all the time?
Thanks for asking. For the double bucket setups, I kept the reservoir topped up ever two to three days, so basically I didn't ever let it run dry, there were always nutrients and water available. These were fed through a fill pipe that goes straight to the bottom bucket. I didn't alternate with any with plain water, but that's probably not a bad idea to periodically flush out the excess salts from leftover nutrients. With these being outside, the rain probably helped with that. Thanks for watching!
Peter Stanley Thank you Peter for taking the time to reply. So, do you wick to the top bucket or you let the roots feed on their own. As we don't have excess rain, I don't make a drainage hole in the bottom bucket. I top feed but my peppers started to get curly leaves due to the nutrients accumulation.
My buckets wick using a 3 inch net cup in the bottom of the inner bucket, so the potting mix in the top bucket extends down into the net cup that is touching the nutrients. It's a similar design to how earth boxes work. There is a drain hole in the bottom bucket that prevents filling to where it could touch the bottom of the inner bucket. That bottom, I forgot to mention , has many small holes on it, serves as a aeration screen. It's important to have that. It the reservoir touches thr bottom of the inner bucket the roots can get water logged.

With the MB, I fed/watered my potted peppers 2 to 3 times a week.
Would this same ratio work for a dwc grow? I have a baquinho pepper in dwc that I've been giving Foliage Pro but I'm about out. I do have master blend on hand but am not sure about the strength. The plant is about 2 feet tall and in bloom right now. It's an indoor winter experiment
This is the strength I've used for both DWC and passsive hydro. You could of course adjust to how your plants reapond. Thanks for watching!

I've used general potting mix, like fafard 3b, but lately have just used straight coco coir. It works great.

hello, i have raised beds of chilli peppers. bell peppers, Tomatoes, egg plants, squash and cucumbers. Should i apply the Master blend mixed water on the top of the leafs or on the roots/soil?

Thanks for watching. I haven't tried adding iron. The times I've used this masterblend mix, I haven't noticed any deficiencies, but different types of plants might require more of one thing or another.

Thanks for asking! I use the same ratio, but decrease the strength a little. For leafy greens I use 1.6 g MB, .8 g Epsom Salt, and 1.6 g Calcium Nitrate.

I thought the recommended amount is 12g-6g-12g for every 5gals? Or have you found that 10g-5g-10g gives better results?
I think the recommended amount is what works best for you. I use 2 g/gal for general use. 2.4 is a little hot for younger plants, but should be fine for mature peppers. It's easier to increase the strength if needed, than burn the plants and (hopefully) wait for new growth.

This is what I use for full strength for peppers.
Are all Epsom salts the same. Can I substitute the Walmart Equate epsom salt with the one provided in the Masterblend Combo kit?
Yes, make sure it doesn't have added to it.
What size container are peppers in
I have raw ingredients: nitrogen 20-0-0 phosphorus 9-61-0 and potassium 0-0-50. How can I turn this into a 4-4-4 mixture. No one explains this. I'm trying to dilute highly concentrated elements to this ratio. I have no way to measure this, I can't get any info on if the bag of 20-0-0 is that strong still after a teaspoon has been added to a gallon of water or not or if by adding it to a gallon that it has become something more like 9-0-0. I was looking for some info so I can precisely create my own fertilizer ratios myself without just following a schedule that someone has made and blindly following it. Any info is appreciated thank you.

@@pepperdactyl Thank you! I've sent him an email. I'm not sure why none of these questions have been answered in a video before. Basically every video I've seen just mixes them at random amount. If I was to mix those together even a teaspoon of each my mixture would be 29-61-50. That would be too strong and kill any plant it comes in contact with. I was hoping to find some sort of calculator that would tell me how much water and amount of each would equal the desired amount I want but such an app doesn't exist I'm afraid

Is masterblend also a product that can be used in non-hydroponic gardening?
I've used it to feed potted plants, adding till runoff 2 to 3 times a week, and it worked fine. I've also used it in self water containers, similar to how earth boxes work.

If measuring spoons works for you, go for it. If not, I would weigh everything for more reproducible results.

I'm not sure what the composition of sea mineral is, but I'm guessing probably not. I could be wrong though.

Thanks for asking. 100 liters is 26.4172 gallons. So you could multiply that by each amount, so for Masterblend (2g x 26.4172 = 52.8344g), Epsom Salt (1g x 26.4172 = 26.4172g), Calcium Nitrate (2g x 26.4172=26.4172grams). You can increase or decrease the base ratios, ie 2 g/gal depending on what your needs are, that's just what I typically use for peppers. I make my Masterblend and Calcium Nitrate the same, and Epsom Salt half of whatever those are.

I have doubts about this product, I have carried out tests with different certified tomato seeds and the result is always the same, the plants grow and grow a lot but do not bear fruit, something is missing in the formula.
Thanks for watching! I normally use this for peppers, but I have used it on tomatoes and gotten plenty of fruits, even on plants getting only window light. I wouldn't discount it just yet, as there could be other factors affecting your production. Have you followed your exact same growing process using other hydroponic nutrients with different results?

How often do you hit your peppers in soil with this fertilizer?
Thanks! For self-watering containers that have potting mix or coco, I'll keep some in the reservoir so they can feed as needed. For a drip system, you would need to separate the concentrates of Calcium Nitrate from the MB/Epsom Salt, but I would feed them every day in a drain to waste setup. I've not used it on in ground plants, for those and the drip plants getting just water I use slow release.

@@mgarwatoski Yes, I added nutrients to them every couple of days or 2-3 times during the workweek. I forgot, the one on the very end was just a potted plant, a Ghostly Jalapeno that I gave to a co-worker, and he brought back to work. That one got fed the same time I did the others, and for it, I just poured in until it ran out the bottom, same schedule as the self-watering containers and it did well.
When applying to soil do you still dilute?
For well draining potting mx, I use the same strength, and water through until it comes out the bottom, for peppers anyway. I haven't tried it for real soil/dirt.

Masterblend is so expensive now at about 6 USD per pound which is insane. I really want to do some hydroponics but the prices are a bit steep when you add up the three ingredients together PLUS I do peppers, and tomatoes which will drink a lot of it. There has to be something cheaper than 30 dollars for 5 pounds, then 5 pounds of the calcium nitrate is 16, then the Epsom Salt at around 8 for six pounds.
Believe me, 5 pounds will last you a really really long time. I would just look for 2 lbs.
@@pepperdactyl at 12g/12g/6g per gallon, with accounting for some spillage etc... that is about 36 gallons of mix per pound.
@@generalawareness101 12 grams is too much per gallon. I use 2. So for 2 grams per gallon, that would make 226.8 gallons per pound.
@@pepperdactyl Ahhh, that 12/12/6 was for 5 gallons for nightshade fruiting plants with some going to 15/15/7.5 when they fruit. I said a gallon but meant 5 gallons.
Masterblend is extremely cheap.. you can get a 62 pound kit for 49$
25 pounds Masterblend 25 pounds of Yara Calnit and 12 pounds of epsom salts on Amazon..
And the the 2.5 pound kit will make 180 gallons that’s 1 pound of Masterblend..
Actually it might be more than 180 gallons per pound
What is the difference between this and a Miracle grow?
Miracle Grow doesn't have as much phosphorus or potassium.

Thanks for watching. The water source could make a difference. It could be me too. I've noticed my calcium nitrate has been absorbing water from air, and I'm wondering if that's messing up things. 2 grams of calcium nitrate dry should be more concentrated that 2 grams hydrated. I bought a 50 lb bag of the stuff, and now regretting it. I did vac seal it all in 5 lb bags. I'll probably break open a new one, take out a pound or less, the reseal the rest, in an attempt to keep things dry longer.
Depending on the plant you could need anywhere between 700-1500 ppm. On top of that, anything but pure deionized water will also raise the number slightly, your mix should work just fine as there's few plants whose ideal ppm range is below 1000, so you should be good to go, not to mention that your environment will also affect the required nutrients, so keep practicing and find what works best for you, keep an eye out for leaf tip burn.
Can I used this to water over the plant?
I've heard of people using as a folliar feed, but I've never tried it.
Jacks 5 12 26 is similar.
The recipe is in the name brother.
This is their 3-2-1 formula.
3.6grams jacks, 2.4grams Calcium Nitrate, 1.2grams Epsom Salt. That's the recipe PER GALLON.

Are you growing in soil or hydroponic?
I grow mixed, some hydroponic, some with potting mix, a few in ground. I don't use the Masterblend for everything. I use it on DWC, Kratky and self watering (sip) type systems.

I haven't really used it in actual soil. I mean I have once or twice watering/feeding sunflowers, but not long term. I've used it plenty with potted plants with standard peat based potting mixed, and it worked great for those.

@@john-smith. I thought I explained this in the video, my apologies if I wasn't clear. This is why Masterblend is in quotes in the title. It's become a genericized trademark, kind of like how everyone calls any adhesive bandage a 'band-aid' when band-aid is a brand name for an adhesive bandage. Masterblend is a brand name for a 4-18-38 tomato fertilizer. I've noticed In the pepper community, many growers blindly refer to any version of 4-18-38 tomato fertilizer as MasterBlend. Over the last few years, I've used different brands of 4-18-38 tomato fertilizer, including MasterBlend and they all mix exactly the same way and produce the same results. So I do truly show how to properly mix MasterBlend 4-18-38, even though I'm not using the brand name version of it in the video.

I am confused about the calcium Nitrate...on the bag it notes 15.5-0-0 , Why is there even Nitrogen in there? With tomatoes and peppers, you wouldnt want so much Nitrogen along with the Master Blend of 4-18-38. Isnt that too much N?
Masterblend by itself is pretty low in Nitrogen. Adding the calcium nitrate changes the NPK from 4-18-38 to 19.5-18-38. It also provides the micronutrient Calcium, which helps with fruit production and prevents issues like blossom end rot. i imagine they would have included it all together if it were possible, but they have to be mixed separately.

I've used the same strength throughout and haven't had any problems.

calibration at 500 g, and then weigh out at a few grams.
The scale is designed to calibrate with a 500 gram weight. The max it can weight is 600 grams. Plus or minus .1 gram probably isn't a huge deal, but it's good to have it as close as possible to get reproduceable results. It's entirely up to you how you do it though.

It's a hydroponic fertilizer often used for vegetables, tomatoes and peppers. There are different brands, and different N-P-Ks, but the one most people use has N-P-K of 4-19-38 and includes trace minerals, macro and micronutrients. As you can see in the video, it's often combined with Epsom Salt and Calcium Nitrate to round out the nutrient profile. I'm not sure if it's available in Bangladesh, maybe not under the brand name. I would search on 4-18-38 tomato fertilizer, as it might be carried under a more generic name if it's available there. Hope that helps.

I usually dilute this to half for just sprouted seedlings. You could mix it half strength or dilute it after.

That sounds a bit high for what i use. My experience has been that there isn't a single ppm that works across all different types and brands of nutrients, and grow methods. 1400 could be great for the type of nutrient and growing method, and age of plants you have.

It is a bit more work that the one-part products. What takes the longest is filling containers with water.
Save the money and just use a nickel. It's exactly 5 grams.
Different scales are calibrated for specific weights, for the one I have I need a 500 g weight.

Why r you mixing 2gram for? If I am doing tomato? How gram ? If I am doing pepper what is the gram? And if I am doing cucumbers what gram? Dies it have to be mix in that order. Nitrate plus salt then the Ca?
@@Joy-eo3nv 2 gram is what I use for fruiting plants, for greens I use a little less, like around 1.6g. Whichever I use for Masterblend, I use the same for calcium nitrate and half the amount of epsom salt. You may find that you need a little less or more for your plants, but that is a good starting point. Also, for peppers when starting seeds, I'll use about 1/2 to 1/3 strength, and once they put out a couple sets of true leaves, I'll gradually increase to full strength. It's important to mix the Calcium Nitrate last. I would mix the Masterblend, then the epsom salt, then shake very well, then add the calcium nitrate, shake well again and finish filling the jug with water.
Throw that weight away a nickel weighs 5 g
This particular scale calibrates at 500g. A nickel wouldn't actually calibrate it.

yes i hope you raise that PH considering bell and hot peppers both like a range of 6.0 - 6.5, and your audio needs work you sound distant and far away and other times ok take a moment and over dub audio and please stop mumbling.....
I found my pH up, and add a couple drops per gallon. I don't raise it all the way, past 6, because I've noticed that a pH shift occurs as the plants feed and use available nutrients. So based on that observation, I think keeping it on the lower range, keeps it in the goldilocks window longer. I could be wrong, that's just what I do.
yes it will settle in a bit and as you say it will balance a bit ... 5.3 raise to about 5.9 range once it settle in on some exchange in mix it will probably settle at about 6.1 and that can change depends on aeration of the mix. your ec that was about a 1.2 ec i have found as example using full hydroponics a 1.5 to 1.7 for early growth and seedlings works decent and later maturer plants around 1.9 and no higher then 2.0 for ec
