the brother and his wife believe housework is easy? Hah, they have to learn the hard way to find out it’s not. It’s amazing how the grandmother was able to maintain the house all the years until the brother and wife took over.

What good is a beautiful house if you can't even keep it beautiful, also they were so eager they didnt care where his mother lived. And kudos on the daughter for telling off the relatives after they didn't even hear her side, despite the mother explaining the situation.
What makes them think they could be on good grace after believing the lies? They should've known better.

What the brother needs is to divorce his wife and work on rebuilding his relationships with his mother and sister. He won't get much out of it, but selling the house would also be a step to at least get a studio apartment. But if his pride continues to hold him then he deserves to continue being miserable. Success doesn't come to you, you won't for it. And sometimes it starts by picking up a mop.

I don’t do a whole lot of housework (my family is more lax about it since our house is small) and even I know that it’s much harder than it looks.

It sounds like they wanted a free house and worked hard for every sq foot.
It amazes me so much that people who CAN afford a maid will refuse to hire a maid, and simply browbeat a family member, whom they CLAIM to love into working as their maid, for free.
Housework HAS VALUE!
Good for OP for not only recognizing and offering her mother appreciation for all she did, but actually PAYING her for it, as well. And now, she can well afford to live in a nursing home, but why should she? She's happy with her family, and they are happy with her. When her body gives out, and home care becomes too much, THEN it will be time to live in a nursing home, for the NURSING. But until then, while her body is still strong enough, she is enjoying her work, and helping her family, and being with them and them all loving each other.
And I am sure that when Mom needs to go to a nursing home, after some more years, OP will have the good sense to hire a maid, as she SEES the VALUE of that labor! It actually lead to promotions and more money! Hiring a maid is a true investment.
Some people think that, even if you can afford to hire a maid, that it's somehow wrong, or "lazy" to hire someone to do housework for you. But it's NOT. It is helping someone who needs a job to HAVE a job, and helping yourself to have a more comfortable home. It boosts the local economy, and makes your own life, your family's life, and your maid's (and your maid's family's) life better.
If you can afford a maid, there is no down side to hiring one. Even the "down side" of having people look down on you for "being lazy" and "hiring someone to do your own work," is not really a down side. It just shows you which of the people you know are stupid and shouldn't be taking up space in your life.
