That was another fun episode made even "funner" by the recollections it brought back of our walk up Kokusai Dori a few years ago. Of special note was seeing that the maker of the purple Baum Kuchen was still in business. I recall him letting me film his making of the specialty with my 3-D video camera. I believe if you had continued to the end you would have come across the A&W Root Beer location where we had root beer floats - something that the rest of Japan no longer has since McDonalds edged them out of business on the "mainland." Apparently Okinawa still has over two dozen A&W Root Beer places even today - or at least had prior to the Pandemic. Hopefully McDonalds success as evident in your livestream hasn't threatened their survival in Okinawa.
I can't speak to Japan's national policy, but did find it of interest to see that an Onsen we stayed at earlier this year had signs in the elevators seeking immigrant employees. One of the key benefits they were promoting were free language lessons.
having spent the day on Kokusai Dori two months ago, you still added some more neat content that i didnt try (like the giant misubi looking thing). pretty cool.
I've been through Kokusai Dori a lot. I kinda miss how it was during the 90s and early 2000s. I was also there for the Starbuck's opening since it was Okinawa's first one. While I don't really care about shopping through it as much, I do like going through it whenever I visit Okinawa.
Missed again, sound asleep before it came on... Oh well, preserved forever. Just getting into it now, so interesting.. The Guy in Search of Steakhouses was a bit much, but always an adventure.
Oh Man we missed you!! xWe love your videos about Japan. Its our dream to collaborate with you guys one day!! Come to Okinawa and you can use our RV rental company!!
John, will you visit the westernmost city in Japan, the Ishigaki Island in Western Okinawa? The vibes should be much less touristy than these streets and should still retain the goodness of Okinawa.
Kanoa is a gender-neutral name of Hawaiian origin. This melodic title means “the free one,” I LOVE THIS^ I was loving the mermaid mural behind John while he ate that amazing Looking spam thing so I looked up there word. 😅
Suggest topic. Since Japanese is shortage of labor in the service industry, I'm interested to know why can't Japanese government take in the immigrants or encourage immigrants? In the current hot/pressing issues, the migrants are flowing at the US borders trying to enter the US. I don't see/hear the Japan movement saying anything like, we have a lot empty/abundant houses. we need people to take care of the elders and other low paying labor we need to fill, etc. Are you open to cover this topic as a way to enrich your topics to attract and/or keep viewers?

It’s not completely necessary. Robotics and AI are filling in a lot of need and new people would be a big drag on social services. Japan has been preparing for this a lot longer than other countries. It’ll weather the demographic change fine.
i think this is an excellent suggestion. i've seen labor issues first hand, only a short distance in to the Kochi countryside. however i believe the real root of the problem is a deep-seated and touchy subject that Japan is not yet willing to admit to or deal with.
Wow, your in Okinawa where i spent my final years overseas in the AirForce at Kadena AB after 10 years in Tokyo

That isn’t the western-most spot though. I was there a few years ago :) scuba diving. I’ll be back to Okinawa again soon.
