  • After two years of traveling full time in our RV, we crashed. This is part of the crash video. We want to document how we move past an accident like this. In future video's we'll discuss where we are in the insurance process, how we're adjusting to not traveling in our RV and everything else that comes after this like changing event. Please click the like and subscribe buttons so you don't miss those future videos.

    Word of advice if I may, my parents have been full time RVers for almost 10 years now and I know for sure they wouldn't have traveled in that weather and we're Canadian hahah. Your house is on wheels, you have no reason not to find somewhere safe to pull off and wait it out. I'm glad you guys are okay! Things definitely could have been much worse. Full time traveling is the best, I've spent plenty of time with my parents on the road. I can't wait to get a rig of my own and start full-timing myself.

  • @thisistheslam

    Dude’s lucky to have been in relatively good condition and not turned over. You can’t put extra weight behind you and proceed at highway speeds around corners like that - obviously. The weight behind you counteracts your ability to gain traction and if you tap your breaks on slick ground you will lose your ability to maintain control around a corner. Glad everyone is ok. I felt terrible for the child in the back who thought they just watched their father potentially die from a vehicle accident.
    Drive slower in those conditions, please.

    Praise God it was an inside turn. The next corner was on the outside of the hill side. It showed that the trailer pushed the truck on the slick roads. Hope and pray all are fine and look forward to the full video and details. I lived in Sunset Utah for eight years. I have traveled that stretch of road many times. know how fast the weather system can change.

    Sorry to see this...I went through some similar conditions in Tennessee last week. It went from sunny dry road to steep snowy curves. The GPS took me over a mountain pass that had no shoulder and no passing lane. I had to go very slow and cautious. I had a mile of cars behind me, but I didn't give a $hit as I didn't want to go thru what you just did. I'm glad no one got hurt.
    Advice... never let the GPS plan your route for you when RVING!

    • @oldcountryman2795
      @oldcountryman2795 3 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      Better advice, get a GPS that’s specifically for large rigs. They cost a lot more but won’t put you on a road you that’s OK for a car but not for a 50ft long rig.

    That was scary to watch. I have a smaller travel trailer that I pull with my half ton, and I'm very aware of its weight under normal circumstances, I don't think I would have challenged the weather that day. Glad you are all ok, vehicles can be replaced. Very disappointing to see motorists not stop after witnessing that.

      Who knows why the accident happened to those who didn’t directly see it. Sometimes people crash because of a medical episode like seizure or cardiac issues, low blood sugar etc. (Not in this case as we know) Some people know cpr or how to recognize low blood sugar. Yes not everyone does and those who can’t help should keep driving. But those who have the knowledge could save a persons life, I’m posting because I have been the person with the knowledge and training that has stopped and helped.

    Thank you for posting. I have driven in these conditions too many times crossing Canada in winter and for all those who say you shouldn't have been driving do not understand that weather comes up on you and finding a safe spot to pull over is very difficult. I would like to make a comment in general about driving in convoy. As a biathlon coach I gave up driving in convoy and advised against it after witnessing too many close calls. I believe that driving in convoy creates an added distraction to lead drivers and puts pressure on trailing drivers to keep up. Many years ago my niece was in a convoy with a gymnastics team when the lead vehicle was struck head-on by an oncoming vehicle killing everyone. The following vehicles with the rest of the team witnessed the accident and 30 years later many suffer from PTSD.
    I was a military driver and drove in convoy several times across Germany on Nato exercises. Military convoys have a slow maximum speed and protocols for following distance and letting other non convoy vehicles pass. Even with only two vehicles I suggest proceeding independently to a predetermined destination.
    Once again, thank you for posting and for raising awareness of what can happen in the blink of an eye. Everyone in the video did an amazing job under the circumstances... take care!

    Towing a toy-hauler with a single rear wheel pick-up truck is fraught with danger in good conditions, never mind on slippery surface. Like towing a rock on the end of a piece of rope. Subject to tail swing like no other trailer. Looks like the trailer had simple time-based brake system . A gentle over-riding of the controller by manual application might have been better than stomping on the brake pedal and locking up the truck's wheels making it essentially a toboggan being pushed by a freight train. Notice how much slower the Semi-truck was travelling in the same conditions?

    Wow, I'm glad you survived. I was driving over Boulder Mtn en route to Torrey on that exact same day, towing my 27 foot travel trailer. It was snowing, but there wasn't quite as much accumulated snow on the road when we came over that pass. There had been strong winds on the hwy 12 hog back coming in to boulder. Rough day of driving. Good maneuvering by the way, could have been much worse. You saved it. Yikes!

    As a father of 5 your daughters reaction for her fathers safety brought me right to tears.
    It is easy for others to be backseats drivers and critique every detail.
    It can happen to anyone at any second.
    You were being precautious and driving plenty slow. Sometimes conditions run away from expectations.
    For my own education were you manually activating the trailer brake on that? Or truck brakes?

    Thanks for sharing. That would be extremely scary! We have a 5th wheel we like to vacation in. But we've never been caught in a snow storm with it and our F350. The F350 does great in our PA snows, but I've never been towing the camper in snow. Hope every one was okay. I watched the second video. It's a shame the F450 trucks have those horrible tires. I drive railroad crews to and from trains here in the mid-west. You can be driving alone and everything is fine then the weather changes. It's hard to just pull off and wait it out when you have a crew of guys telling you how to drive in bad weather. But I always tell them this ain't my first rodeo fella's and if I think it's unsafe I wll find somewhere to stop. But as you said the weather changed quickly and the accident happened. Thank goodness you're safe. The little girl crying was the hardest part for me to hear. She was truly worried about the driver in the truck. But I clicked the subscribe button and hope you give us all an update soon. God Bless you.

  • @timmorris3056
    @timmorris3056 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Super Sucks, atleast everyone survived. An electric trailer brake controller with the manual override lever usually helps gain control of the pushing trailer in this situation, also make sure to load the trailer tongue heavy to put max pressure on the tow vehicle for traction. Go to Les Schwab and get ALL truck and trailer tires "Siped" , makes a HUGE difference on ice and slippery surfaces. People that say no have Never done it. It's what makes Hankook ice tires the best of the best. Lastly, traveling downhill in an ice storm, Slllooowwwww down, don't give a damn how many people honk, next safe area, pull off and let them by, Smart Semi truck drivers do that every day to stay safe, it will save you buying a new rig, and maybe your life!

    I have been towing heavy gooseneck trailers since the 1970s. I make it a rule to never pull on ice or snow covered roads! Usually when I have shopped for a new truck the salesmen have always tried to talk my into a 4X4! I have always told them if the roads are bad enough to require 4 wheel drive I have NO business towing a trailer.

    This was scary to watch and had to have been terrifying for that little girl. I’ll never forget traveling with my mom with my dad in front of us, when a driver headed the wrong way came toward him. Thankfully my dad pulled off calmly and was okay. I just can’t imagine if I saw what could’ve happened.

    To fast for the conditions. In the mountains of California it is law that the drive axles on the pull rig be chained and the braking axles on the trailer be chained as well. I saw no chains in this video
