  • Deer season was an important event in Shannon County. The schools let out, many businesses closed, and a large portion of the population went hunting. In 1978, deer season lasted from November 18 through November 26 and provided the backdrop for much of the filming that took place in the Fall. Camera rolls 208 and 209 were filmed at a deer camp on the banks of the Jacks Fork River. The camp had been organized by Shannon Ennis, Superintendent of Schools in Eminence. Included in the camping party were several high school students, a few teachers, and at least one member of the school board. The camp provided a relaxed setting for discussing improvements in education, the scarcity of jobs, student expectations, some of the economic realities of living in an isolated rural area, and their hopes for the future. Filming took place at lunchtime when the campers got back from the morning's hunt. Lunch that day was squirrel. Shannon Ennis is the husband of Dorothy Ennis who is featured in camera rolls 348-351. Footage shot on November 20, 1978, in Shannon County, Missouri.
Part of the raw footage recorded 1978-1979 for the 1981 documentary motion pictures "Shannon County: Home" and "Shannon County: Hearts of the Children." Located in Special Collections, Meyer Library, Missouri State University.

I was 17 years old and loved to go out hunting with my Dad and brothers. I wish I could close my eyes and wake up on that deer stand Nov. 1978 as if all of this was a bad dream. 🦌

I would give everything I own to go back to 1978. I was 11 years old and that river the Jack's fork was a special place for me and still is a favorite place for me.

I wasn’t yet born in 78 but I often wish we could go back to these days! When people were real and life was good.

I just spent the last week at the Jack's fork river for deer camp. Its changed a little since 1978 but not enough to matter. Still a great time with some of the best people I have ever had the privilege to know.

There are so many lessons learned at hunting camp. The fun part is that you don’t even realize you are learning until you reflect on the times.

Born in 78 and at my deer camp right now. On the Buffalo river, though. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

SO SAD !!!! The family tradition of hunting is dying !!!! Most of the younger generation don't anything to do with it. The whole purpose of a hunting trip is not just harvesting an animal
