  • Camera roll 268 is one of three rolls (267, 268, 269) that show Willie Piatt and two of his sons, Edward and Kenny, working together in the timber skidding, cutting, and splitting oak logs into stave bolts. Missouri has long had a thriving barrel stave industry that relies on an abundance of white oak and the skills of timber workers like the Piatts, and the demand for their product is word wide. The stave bolts in these rolls likely ended up as whiskey barrels in Kentucky or Tennessee or Scotland. They may even have had a second life as wine barrels in France and other parts of Europe. The first part of roll 268 was filmed during the Piatt's lunch break begun in roll 267 and captures conversation about work, hunting, and various other subjects. The second part of the roll shows Willie using a measuring stick and chainsaw to mark and cut logs into stave-length segments (approximately 39 inches). The shorter segments must then be split, loaded onto their truck, and taken to the stave mill. The Piatts took their stave bolts to a stave mill in Bunker, Missouri. Although delivery to the mill was not filmed, Camera Roll 253 of this collection shows Willie and Kenny working at that mill splitting logs. The Piatts were a close-knit clan that worked hard, hunted often, enjoyed life, and loved humor. For more of the Piatt family in other contexts see rolls 215-219, rolls 248b-249, and rolls 321-327. Footage shot on November 30, 1978, in Bunker, Shannon County, Missouri.
Part of the raw footage recorded 1978-1979 for the 1981 documentary motion pictures "Shannon County: Home" and "Shannon County: Hearts of the Children." Located in Special Collections, Meyer Library, Missouri State University.

@@katinapiattclavier6338 Thank you so much for your comments! Your family is so precious. There was a small clip of your great grandmother in the original documentary when they were all gathered and had a deer that Gary was cutting on the porch. Would have loved to see more of her, but I think she was probably camera shy. I like your great grandfather's personality. I watch "Portrait of the Ozarks" a lot with my daughter just because it is so peaceful and informative. I love the history and the fine people. I really appreciate your family taking the time to share their lives like this so long ago. Is Edward your grandfather or Gary, or Eugene the nephew? There were 7 sons of Willie, right? Just wondering. I know some of Willie's boys have passed away. I saw that Edward and Kenny are still living. I wish there was a "Where Are They Now" video. I'd love to have an update. Well, may God bless you and your precious family. Hope you all are well. 🙏💖🌹

Haha i saw a comment on another vid about southern MO accents where a dude from alabama said that when he visited southern MO he was shocked that the southern accents here were even stronger then where he's from. It also made him realize that missouri is def not just a midwestern state, it has a midwestern part but the southern half is very southern

My great grandma who was born in the 1890’s was born only a couple counties north of the people in this video and cursed like a sailor. Only thing is that the words/sayings she used then weren’t taboo until the last 30 years. It’s really just a matter of perspective and doesn’t have any bearing on a persons worth or kindness.

@@coleslavpiesboi No condemnation on your grandmother, yet What comes out of our mouth matters so much as we all will give an account to God for every word we utter in this life.
