Also, remember, John Bush was sought out by metallica to be their vocalist back in '82 and he turned down the opportunity, instead choosing to stay with Armored Saint.

WTF? John Bush has long been recognized as a premier metal singer, he's got a natural grit and one hell of a tone to his soulful vocals! The man, with that commanding tonality and unique phrasing was simply put on this earth to deliver killer, metal vocals! The main word to use when describing Bush is GROWL!

    • @treff9226

He has this gritty, rough tone which is perfectly suited for metal music! It's a top shelf GROWL! John can also do justice to slower, ballad type material. It started with mighty Armoured Saint, his distinct command of the mic immediately stuck out. Theres a reason Anthrax and yes, Metallica, wanted him as their frontman - the man has a gift that few share with him! 🎤🎤🎤

I think there's kind of a "you had to be there" element with Anthrax. They were a breath of fresh air amid the self-seriousness of most thrash bands and the vapid silliness going on in mainstream metal at the time. They were the most punk of the big 4 thrash bands, and their embracing of hip-hop was revolutionary at a time when the only overlap between rock and rap that anyone had seen was Run DMC and Aerosmith doing Walk This Way. They were a pretty special band, but not necessarily in a way that's going to easily translate to 30 years later and a totally different context. Basically if you were a working-class young white dude in 1989 driving your shitty car to your job at Arby's, Anthrax was the rawest shit you had ever heard.

This is my favorite song by them and I know how y’all feel about what you e heard and I feel the same on the other Anthrax stuff. The John Bush era was the Anthrax I enjoyed the most. I respected what I grew up on with Joey but the Bush stuff was the best. I REALLLLLY wanted you guys to like it. But fair is fair. Free thinking is what it’s all about!!!! Keep it going fellas

Bring The Noise with Public Enemy was a groundbreaking song that opened the doors for an entirely new genre of music. Anthrax was always pushing and supporting other styles of music outside of metal and for that mentality to not be in competition, but side by side with other genres speaks volumes regardless if you like them or not.

Last Train Home, Win Hands Down, Left Hook From Right Field, After Me The Flood, and Can U Deliver (a bit cheesy but their early claim to fame) are probably the standout tracks imo. Win Hands Down has the most perfect chorus and overall may be their best song, but Last Train Home is a really dynamic piece from before John joined Anthrax. Pretty certain you'll appreciate them over Anthrax quite a lot.

9:55 I feel like the reason why George feels this way is because the recommendations for his era of songs have been horrible. I love “Among the Living” but it might be Belladonna’s worst vocals on an Anthrax album. Probably because it isn’t a very vocal focused album. They need to listen to something off of “Spreading the Disease” to truly appreciate Joey’s vocals. I’d recommend “Madhouse.” That is their most beginner friendly song and I think they’d really like it. Their newer material with Joey is also excellent.

@@iridiumrockandmetalreviews2128 I think it was because the songs of Spreading the Disease lended themselves a lot more to Joey’s voice. Spreading the Disease was quite thrashy but Among the Living was a whole new level of thrash and I just don’t think Joey’s vocals melded well with that style. So he would often just resort to that “shouting near the key” type vocal style. The last two albums have been more of traditional style of metal and Joey sounded FANTASTIC on them! Don’t get me wrong though, I still love Among the Living, State of Euphoria(I know people like to shit on this one but I’ve always kinda liked it), and Persistence of Time.

Damn, I had high hopes you guys would enjoy this one since it's so different from the 80's material. That's the beauty of these reaction videos, you've tried both eras of Anthrax and it's just not for you. I was initially hestitant of the Bush era albums because they were so different. But after a few times listening to them, I came to really enjoy them. I think you might enjoy some of the songs off the next two albums (Stomp 442 and Vol. 8- The Threat is Real). Bush does seem a lot more relaxed and there are some great songs on those albums.
