Conventional high density sowing method (HDS) consumed 365 man days/ha in weeding, thinning, sorting and fibre extraction processes to produce 40.45 q/ha fibre. In HDS jute plant height (PH), basal diameter (BD), plant weight, and population at harvest were 324 cm, 1.57 cm, 127.5g/plant and 5.25 lakh/ha, respectively.
    In low density sowing (LDS 1.2 to 2.6 seed kg/ha mixed with fried jute seed/river sand), PH and BD of jute were 312-353 cm, 1.73-1.98 cm respectively. Here, plant weights, population count and fibre yields for the seed rates of 1.20, 1.5, 1.87, 2.24 and 2.6 kg/ha were 239g, 251g, 228g,245g and 230 g/plant and 2.7, 2.9, 3.03, 3.45 and 3.5 lakh/ha and 33, 34, 36, 43 and 44 q fibre/ha, respectively.
For uniform plant distribution the treated ( Bavitin 2g/ kg seed) mixed jute seed and sand/ fried seeds were broadcasted in double criss- cross method and it was followed by one irrigation.
LDS reduced 75-114 man days/ha(Rs.18750-.28500/ha) in major operations over HSD. At farmers’ field, applying LDS (1.5-2.4 kg live + 3.75-4.5 kg inert seeds /ha], the jute fibre yield was 38- 45 q/ha and its reduced 75-98 man days/ha (Rs.18750 to Rs.24500/ha) in different operations.
Pretilachlor 50 EC was applied @ 0.9 kg/ha at 48 hours of sowing with irrigation for weed control.

Scope: This method can be adopted in other small seeded broadcast crops like mustard, sesamum, cabbage ,carrot , knolkhol, raddish, cumin and poppy etc.
