The electrical in the back is likely setup for 100v, not 110 or 120 like the US. On electronics it usually won't matter, but on appliances it will. Shouldn't be too hard to change. It may be as simple as changing that inverter for a US one and swapping the outlets for extra safety.
This was what I thought too. Japanese camper, Japanese writing on the electronics. It's deceiving because they use the same outlets, minus the ground hole. So stuff will still plug in.
Your deisel heater shutting off might be something as simple as the fuel gelling up. A small amount of 911 or lucas anti-gel will drop your freezing temp to -10. Small deisel engines have lower rail pressure so they are more susceptible to freezing fuel. You probably know this but i hope it helps, love the vids thank you for taking us on your journeys😁
If the diesel heater comes on and goes off through the night it might be the firing tube inside it, I had the same issue on my semi truck here in the UK. Only took a workshop an hour to fix it and now works flawlessly
run that heater for 15 mins one or twice a year before winter as well and it will stay running for atleast 1000 hours or *should* its important to let it run for 15 minutes as well so that the burner tube your talking about doesnt get gunked up. want to get it up to its optimal temp to prevent any fuel coming into that tube and not burning completely and exhausting, that will affect the tube, the glow pin that ignites the fuel, and the little wire mesh screen filter that surrounds the glow pin. very delicate heaters, but will also run for a long time before needing any service work IF used correctly.

I live in a 26 ft camper and use a 1300 watt heater. It does the trick mind you it doesn't get near as cold here. I sure enjoy watching you and enjoy your cooking!
You'll have to upgrade your power inverter to one that can handle more watts if you want it to power the heater. Anything with a heating element will draw a lot of power
The wattage of the inverter was my first thougth too. High draw appliance such as heaters tend to have an initial spike wattage requirements to start, then drop to a constant wattage draw. And Steve's inverter might not have enough peak wattage to handle the initial start of the heater (or even not enough of both). That is why it can operate the fan (requiring less wattage), but not the heater itself. A good modern inverter on average has a peak wattage (good only for approx 1 sec) that is double its constant wattage. But Steve might have an old school or a low wattage inverter that can't handle the heater's 950W current draw.
@@fatmanoverlanding What you said is 100% true, however it's also likely the fact that japan uses the same plugs as North America but at 100v instead of 120v so the heater could be sensing this and not allowing it to come on. Considering getting a diesel heater for my tent next winter. I’d like to see how that would work in your truck camper one day. Dry heat seems like the ticket!
Mav, seeing the symptoms you experienced with your 950W heater from using the household powerpoint (ie. 110v/220v) in Steve, could might mean that the peak load (not the constant load) required to start the heater might exceed Steve's inverter. Thus why it will run the fan (requiring less wattage), and not the heater itself. Do you know what the contant wattage and the peak wattage of Steve's inverter is?
Always amazes me how good of a driver he is. Ik it snows a lot where he lives and he's used to it but most people still wreck like crazy and drive super slow in it. Meanwhile he's cruising through and finding a good place to camp for the night
Some of that comes down to the vehicle you are driving as well....people want these big fancy trucks and SUV's with a lot of power, but for now/ice driving, the more power you have the worse off you are, you don't want spinning wheels, as soon as you lose traction you are just along for the ride. That Japanese mini-RV is great because of its power to weight ratio, it'll do quite well in snow, sure you can get them sideways if you wanna but their far more weight balanced and handle bad road conditions really well. My old Ford Tempo was great in snow/ice too, front wheel drive, with a 4 cylinder engine, it had no trouble at all in bad weather. People drive too fast for conditions that is what gets them into trouble...between driving too fast for conditions and driving too fast for their driving skills are why people end up in wrecks in bad weather, as well as in good weather...if they can't drive without getting into accidents during good weather, they shouldn't even try driving in bad weather.
I found at Walmart a couple winters ago a little electric heater that only draws 250 W!!! And only cost $10.99!! And throws out a good amount of heat!! Back story, I live off grid in a tiny home 12x20...I have solar as well as a 3500 W gen. The generator doesn't even know the little heater is plugged in and running, which is Awesome!!!
usually in RVs the household electrical outlets are set up to be on when you are plugged into shore power, unless they have a built in inverter (and in that case you would have some other buttons to push to get those working). My old RV didn't have an inverter, so I got myself a small inverter, hooked that up to the house batteries, and plugged my RV's shore power plug directly into that inverter (had to have a 30amp to 15amp adapter plug). That will get the household plugs to work. Depending upon your inverter size and battery bank size you could even run a microwave or cooktop on it... oh, and then if you have a built in generator that too will run the household plugs. But ya, that is noisy!
*Bro you really need to install an aftermarket fuel tank. It's fairly inexpensive and it'll will help you out so much! Love ya bud.* Edit: it could be a fuse that's blown for that outlet :)
It doesnt matter the physical size of the heater, the Watts are too high. You can try for a 500 Watt. 250 is normally the next one down in wattage but doesnt heat great.
MAV!! There are very few times in life when you cook something and think to your self why didnt I know this 20 years earlier ... I'm someone who loves cooking and is now Adticted too and loving the videos.. .. I love to cook and camp .. and at 52 you get set in your ways at what you like to cook ... but there are times espeshally when on the road you want something easy to cook and store .what you take with you ... if you dont have refriduration ...... when I tried this first I had to cook another serving once done .. it was that good .... all you need is 4 eggs ... 6 slices of vafer thin bacon ..( breakfast bacon) .. half a dozen slices or more of spicey pepperoni.. a yellow pepper .. and mozzarella cheese.. fry bacon and pepperoni.. add chopped yellow pepper .. fry .. cover with whisked egg .. turn once . Cover with spin itch leaves and cheese .. put top on pan leave for 4 mins ....... soooooo good it needs No salt pepper or anything ..... eat with brown roll covered in real butter .. addictive you'll never do it just once ... the diesel heater might need a service, they have a tiny little screen and a vent hole that gets plugged up. we have them in all of our trucks and they usually work great!

You might try frying with canola or vegetable oil as they have a higher heat point than olive oil. You can sauté some vegetables with olive oil but to cook those potatoes properly, you need the correct oil. Try nonstick stone for your cooking. It makes for much easier cleanup.
I'd like to see a video of fixing Steve up a bit, nothing HGTV but at least some insulated drapes over the windows and doors, rubber mats on the floor; seems it would take less to heat it then. I know you're used to rustic camping but makes me feel cold knowing it's so drafty, ha ha. And....please get a mattress cover pad for the bed, think that would be cozier also and more sanitary. Love you though!
Drive that thing South….Mav….and enjoy campfires outside under the stars…hiking everywhere…and packing up your morning coffee to enjoy on some gorgeous rock with a view and no snow !
A part of me really believes that you named this thing what you did just so you could say, "Hey everybody! Welcome to Camping with Steve! Now it's time for a Step Two!" 😂
Steve needs some fuel, so Mav meets up with Thor! With that, and the generator/heater issues, ol' Steve continues to deliver on the surprises. Breakfast for dinner, always a win.
My family has always had a camper van or a mobile home, so it's so nostalgic to watch this! I actually have owned a hiace kind of like that (without the camper part) and they're pretty much immortal.
Yo! Love the videos Mav!! Tip on the cooking potions- whenever you are cooking with proteins, add them to the pan first. You can render the fat and flavors out. Remove from the pan and then in this instance, cook the potatoes and other veggies! You can use the natural fat and the flavors will blend and be more cohesive and permeate thru the meal better. 🤙🤙
Hey mav!! been a fan for a while!! pleaseeee go on walmarts website and look up “500w heater” atleast where i am, they have 500w small space heaters.. i have a few of them and not gonna lie.. i’ve accidentally left them on all day😂 and i’ve had no fires or anything with well over 100+ hours of use out of one little one. it’s a good little heater and maybe your outlets can power them!! don’t give up hope yet!!
Love all episodes. Lol I'm not going to lie my best pan is the same 12$ copper pan I got at Walmart lol love that pan never burns. Oh and I learned the other day not to scrap vegetables off the cutting board with the sharp edge of your knife. You should use the back bone of the knife. I know you spent a lot of money on your knifes figured I would just put that out there. Anyway bro keep it up videos are awesome. You should take a trip to Connecticut it's beautiful in spring and summer. Lots of lakes to fish here. Keep on trucking brotha.
The wife, myself, and my mom's cat, spent most of 17 and 18 living out of our 30 year old RV. The winter of 17' and 18' were cold, and there were several weeks of subzero temps. The RV's built in propane system didn't work so we used a kerosine heater the first winter (which was a mistake, primarily because soot got all over everything and resisted cleaning up). The next season I switched over to a Buddy. It worked very well, although in both cases we took care never to leave them running if we were not present, or at night when we were sleeping. We used an electric blanket on the bed (as long as we were able to plug in somewhere, and on a couple of brutely cold nights, ran the generator all night). Thankfully a week before the new year (19') we were able to move into our new home. One does what one must to survive.
For space of the size you have in "Steve" you really should only need, at most, 500 watts of heating (Assuming decent insulation of the cabin). Fancy stuff like "Oscillation" doesnt really impact a heaters ability to heat a space. It also doesnt matter if its ceramic or just wire filament (infrared doesnt heat air, it only heats objects but thats a whole different discussion) dont be fooled by heater gimmicks. Electric space heaters are extremely efficient. literally 100% efficient. Energy in=Energy out. so if you see a heater that has bells and whistles for 50 bucks and its 1500watts max and another cheapo no frills electric heater thats also 1500watts for twenty bucks, guess what, they both heat the same with the same power and efficiency. save yourself some money and just get the cheapest heater you can wiyth just enough power to to the job. Those little tiny 250watt personal heaters would be excellent for your purposes. two of them ought to be enough to heat that cab from the coldest temperatures. use one to conserve power and only use the second if it isnt enough. youll save your batteries and generators and get efficient heat.
The other thing to add to this would be get the proper sleeping bag for the weather conditions you will be sleeping in, and don't run a space heater or diesel heater all night long, you are wasting fuel and electricity...turn one of the heaters on a half hour to an hour before you get up, that should be enough to not freeze to death as you are getting up and getting dressed....the camper will also heat up more as you turn the stove on for breakfast...so don't overheat the living space running heaters all night long and the stove in the morning....you shouldn't need the heaters through the night if you have the right sleeping bag. Don't sleep in the clothes you wore throughout the day either, sleep in your shorts, or pajamas. This allows your clothes to air out from the day's activities, and allows your body to be more relaxed and less restricted for better blood flow which allows of course better circulation which also keeps your body temperature more consistent.
Very funny. Love that little vehicle. I wish I done some more van life and exploring, traveling. But now I'm older and really crippled up. Traveling would be to hard. Breaking my neck was the worst injury I've had and ive had a few. Glad I found your videos bro. Don't drive me to hard. 😂
I have this 350 watt “Handy Heater” that has a temperature setting and has worked great in my camper. I wanted something with a temp setting so i would have to wake up to turn it off or on. At 350 watts it easily last me 8-9hrs on my yeti3000. I got it for like $25 on ebay
Wow! That’s awesome! Curious to know what cold temps this worked in - and what insulation is in your van. Would be good to not need to go the diesel heater route
Your diesel fuel furnace should keep your entire RV rocking warm all night, including up front when you're driving. I had one in my semi that I used in the states and Canada and Alaska. Never let me down even at -20°f. Take Steve to a shop and have them get it right. And do something about that small tank issue. Add a second or get a bigger tank. One last thing to consider, get a diesel stove top. You can find them at marine dealers. Get all setup on diesel and a bigger fuel supply and you will be so happy. Sir have a great day. Recipes? Hmmm, I might send you something.
I liked to just crack a couple eggs into a coffee mug with some butter, cheese, salt&pepper and maybe some ham and microwave it for a minute. half way through the cook time, stir it up and then cook it all the way. it puffs up really nice, im surprised it's not a more popular way to cook eggs. no cookware required of course, and clean up is just soaking it in soapy water when you're done and just sponging out the mug. super lazy awesome way to have eggs.

I have a diesel heater and LOVE it !
@@wrkAhaLik247 I’ve watched a little bit of Steve but not as much as I’d like!
I have one - it makes the world of difference!
You're videos are helping me through a rough time in life. Thank you for making YOUR quality of videos. Because you are top teir
Out of all the TH-cam channels of people doing this, Mav is just hands down the best.
I agree
You are always a pure joy! Keep On Truckin' !
It's crazy how much effort you put in your video best of luck 🤞
I love your attitude & positivity. Great videos. Thanks Mav. And don’t see the new West Side Story! LOL
Mav. Picture this. You, Steve Wallace and Steve. I call it “Camping with Steve in Steve”
Dude I love your videos me and my 7-year-old daughter watch them all the time.
Do you know what the contant wattage and the peak wattage of Steve's inverter is?
yeah the amp draw on that heater is too much so the inverter is shutting off on overload
I would have to put mushrooms in mine but that meal looked really good. Steve is awesome.. Tyfs God bless you
Always amazes me how good of a driver he is. Ik it snows a lot where he lives and he's used to it but most people still wreck like crazy and drive super slow in it. Meanwhile he's cruising through and finding a good place to camp for the night
Nah if you got common sense it’s easy. Only dumbasses wreck
Confidence, skill, and common sense go along way🛻
I found at Walmart a couple winters ago a little electric heater that only draws 250 W!!!
You're a good soul Mav!
*Bro you really need to install an aftermarket fuel tank. It's fairly inexpensive and it'll will help you out so much! Love ya bud.*
Edit: it could be a fuse that's blown for that outlet :)
Mav i have Covid and this video really lifted up my spirits tonight! 😃
Thank you so much for doing what you do! 💯
It doesnt matter the physical size of the heater, the Watts are too high. You can try for a 500 Watt. 250 is normally the next one down in wattage but doesnt heat great.
*Amy* .. I hope you and your Boys *Enjoyed Watching Mav Making your Meal* .. ❤
I Enjoy the winter Videos! Keep on truckin! Mav you are almost at 2 Mil subs. I was in the top 20K...
He’ll get there so soon, can’t help but love Mav’s videos
Mavvy!!! 🐟🧊❄️
That dinner looked good! Thanks to those kids, I am going to make it. Good video.
the diesel heater might need a service, they have a tiny little screen and a vent hole that gets plugged up. we have them in all of our trucks and they usually work great!
Really it shouldn’t tho as he just bought it “new” from the scam artists he bought it from
@@WaddickLawnCare it couldnt have been completely new. These things arent made anymore these days. This one was most likely made in the 90s
@@WaddickLawnCare its probably just because of dirty fuel. I've seen brand new ones last only a month right in the beginning of winter.
@@ash_dablunt9258 well no shit bud I’m not an idiot I know it’s an older vehicle but fuck that thing is a complete and utter piece of trash!!! Very poor work done throughout and if you can’t see it sorry that’s your lack of knowledge lol
@@ImMattrix I’m talking about the vehicle itself! The builders didn’t do a good job and it’s very easy to see that!
Very impressed with your cooking abilities
His name is Thor when talking to strangers, but every that knows him calls him Dennis.
You might try frying with canola or vegetable oil as they have a higher heat point than olive oil. You can sauté some vegetables with olive oil but to cook those potatoes properly, you need the correct oil.
Try nonstick stone for your cooking. It makes for much easier cleanup.
You should upgrade the gas tank to a 20 gallon or add an extra tank
I would definitely add an extra tank at the least, an 11 gallon tank would suck
I'd like to see a video of fixing Steve up a bit, nothing HGTV but at least some insulated drapes over the windows and doors, rubber mats on the floor; seems it would take less to heat it then. I know you're used to rustic camping but makes me feel cold knowing it's so drafty, ha ha. And....please get a mattress cover pad for the bed, think that would be cozier also and more sanitary. Love you though!
Hey Mav always enjoy your videos, they are always so interesting and relaxing☺️☺️
You and Steve are so awesome 🍻
Definitely enjoying all of the camping content, never know which vehicle he’s gonna take out for a trip
@@overwanderadventures7312 true. Mavs so well spoken, mature and down to earth

A part of me really believes that you named this thing what you did just so you could say, "Hey everybody! Welcome to Camping with Steve! Now it's time for a Step Two!" 😂
Well done Steve and Mav. Xxx keep on camping. Xx
Great vehicle but fuck the builder ruined this hiace!! Basically scam artists lol
This is the most sensible cooking tip ive ever read, nice one
Whoa! This was my son's recipe, thank you for this! I've always used it as a 'set it and forget it' camping meal, but that made so much sense!
Hey mav!! been a fan for a while!! pleaseeee go on walmarts website and look up “500w heater” atleast where i am, they have 500w small space heaters.. i have a few of them and not gonna lie.. i’ve accidentally left them on all day😂 and i’ve had no fires or anything with well over 100+ hours of use out of one little one. it’s a good little heater and maybe your outlets can power them!! don’t give up hope yet!!
@@karenlewkowitz5858 doesn’t matter your not him it won’t be the same! Welcome to human biology!
What kind is it? I've been looking for those.
@@karenlewkowitz5858 i’ve used it in 28 degrees, van is somewhat insulated but not very well. It is quite samll though

Excellent video Mav. God bless!
Honestly proud on how far this kid has got ☝🏻 Keep up the amazing content
dude your videos are great, you're such a great guy and you deserve everything that is good in your life, thanks for your videos that we enjoy so much, greetings from Portugal 🇵🇹
Remember folks, an expensive heater will only warm you for the night. A cheap heater can heat you for the rest of your life. Be careful what you buy!
I didn’t get this comment at first then totally did lol
That makes absolutely no sense what you just said. I know where you are going with it but its needs revision.
