    i have the same stove it works great but i made my own cap for it. you need a make a shield that covers 50%. Right now the wind is trying to blow down the pipe, so yes it will fill the tent and almost put the fire out. By making a cover for the cap it will pull a vacuum and that stove will cook you out of the tent. Just make sure the cap can spin and face shield into the wind. Would be good tip for a video.

      @shazmodeus2795 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      random thought, but can you fabricate your DIY cap to act like a weathervane? So that the wind always turns it so the shield is protecting the pipe?

    Mav, you need to give the wood stove another chance. Three main ways to stop smoke in tent...keep a burning fire in store to create draft, keep pipe vertical and create a block for the wind on windy nights. Also, the type of wood makes a big difference. Burning bark creates a lot more smoke. Come to Lake Winnipeg and I will host you on the ice.

  • @tyler0487
    @tyler0487 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +88

    If wind is blowing north or south then put your chimney east/west and vice versa. If it’s east/west winds then put it north or south and the changing wind is less likely to blow the smoke in

    • @crackasour
      @crackasour 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Also you need to be using all hardwood, soft wood burns super dirty and will clog up your flues very quickly

      He had it slanted. That was the problem. Air traveling side ways slanted met and pushed it back. If he had it come out and curve up and put wind cover around that would help as smoke is the first thing hard lesson to learn about fires or in his case he learned a lesson. Smoke before fire. Learn how to control smoke first before learning how to make fires.

He got cold too, went and slept in the Sherp with the heater running then the 60mph Blizzard came but we had back tracking electronics plus or minus 6" and made it back IFR in the Sherp. Never saw anything but white the 10 miles back. It was 40 below screw the wind chill he said no such thing. Glad I had heated clothing.

    Your wood stove is smoking because the fire is "cold". First use dead standing trees for firewood. Firewood you find on the ground is wet. Bust the firewood into small pieces. Load them to the rear. The hotter the fire the less smoke.

    I don’t normally use wood stoves on the ice for a few different reasons but some tips for woods stoves: 1) burn the driest hardwood you can find. 2) keep the fire hot. 3) keep the pipe vertical and add an adjustable cap (that you can turn depending on wind direction). 4) extra wind breaks are key, if you have a windy day, sometimes it’s hard for the smoke to escape from the stack, you need to be prepared with additional caps/windbreaks.

    Hvacker here. The elbow you said broke probably just popped put of its lip holding it in there since you can rotate them around. Just need a small flat head and good patience. Preferably that exhaust needs to be 4" or higher. Getting to much smoke off that 3" use 4 or higher should solve the problem. Love the vids.

    I feel your pain with the smoke !! The first couple times ice camping I got smoked out in the middle of the night and was so frustrating. Every time your out you will learn something new . Tips .. a wind deflector is a must on the end of the pipe , bring a piece of plywood to put under the stove to stop the melting that will happen when the stove is working properly and try and cover the whole ice in something to stop the heat from melting. Did a 4 day trip and when I left the floor had around 5 inches of water everywhere from the heat of the stove . All that water and being cold from the stove smoking us out all night really sucked .. happy fishing MAV

    Another fun video - cheers, Mav ✌️ you gotta start getting standing dead wood when you can. That stuff you’re finding already on the ground will be wet and won’t give you much heat at all and will keep going out like it was in this video. As much wood kept in the tent the better too, you can imagine how putting a frozen piece of wood in the stove will dramatically drop the temperature so you’re constantly having to keep heating it up instead of heating the environment.

You shouldn’t have installed a grate if you decided to heat with brushwood; it caused soot to form on the mesh. and inside the pipes too. Oh boy - you went to Western Canada where it was f'n freezing!!! That was very brave of you. Even the Albertans had frozen homes, pipes etc.... it seems to have been insane. In Quebec it wasn't so cold 🙂
    Thanks for taking us along!

    Set up the new stove at the shop outside and just do a burn with it outside of a tent and tinker around with its settings. Otherwise, I think you'd really enjoy the Pomoly Stoves and Hot tents! I've watched so many different channels using either winnerwell or pomoly. The Pomoly has more features to the stove for preventing smoke outs. Side bottomed air intakes to help avoid troubles. I just tested mine out and it worked great. No issues other than leaving the chimney flue wide open all night 😂 friggin cold! Keep up the great work homie! We will always have stuff to learn when it comes to camping gear! 🤘🏻😁

    Mav, would you be able to make a video “everything you need to know about ice fishing?” Please.. all the gear you use/ consider essential or helpful… I think it would help a lot of people trying to get into the sport :) thanks! Love the vids

    One of the things I noticed is that you had the damper in the chimney pipe wide open which is a no no. Close it off to 1/4 to 1/2 that will hold back the wind pushing the smoke back in and open the draft in front of the stove to 3/4 to full open. But the damper I seen was wide open the whole time which is a no no. So that alone will change how well it works.

    Better to be safe than sorry, Ive camped in -25 with no heat at all just a tent and it was rough but doable. We kinda dug a hole and put our tent in it, snow is a great insulator.
