I don’t normally use wood stoves on the ice for a few different reasons but some tips for woods stoves: 1) burn the driest hardwood you can find. 2) keep the fire hot. 3) keep the pipe vertical and add an adjustable cap (that you can turn depending on wind direction). 4) extra wind breaks are key, if you have a windy day, sometimes it’s hard for the smoke to escape from the stack, you need to be prepared with additional caps/windbreaks.
i have the same stove it works great but i made my own cap for it. you need a make a shield that covers 50%. Right now the wind is trying to blow down the pipe, so yes it will fill the tent and almost put the fire out. By making a cover for the cap it will pull a vacuum and that stove will cook you out of the tent. Just make sure the cap can spin and face shield into the wind. Would be good tip for a video.
I’ve been watching MAV for two years now. Best show on the Internet! There’s no faking it, he is showing us pure and simple how to survive in sometimes the worst scenario.
Its the WORST when i see creators keeping as many fish as they can. I appreciate you mav, for your chivalry toward nature. Catch what your gonna eat kinda thing. When you threw that fish back it made me smile with more respect than i already had for ya.
Mav, you need to give the wood stove another chance. Three main ways to stop smoke in tent...keep a burning fire in store to create draft, keep pipe vertical and create a block for the wind on windy nights. Also, the type of wood makes a big difference. Burning bark creates a lot more smoke. Come to Lake Winnipeg and I will host you on the ice.
Im not a fisher at all but I love how much respect you show for the animals, catch and eat or catch and release, you really exemplify how fishing should work! Keep it up, I'm a new sub but I've been binging, great vibes all around. TY for the videos!
I've only just started the video and I'm so happy Dan is back in the video. My all time favourite video that I constantly go back to is when you and Dan go ice fishing and land that giant fish and you guys cook up a mean feed. So I already know this one is going to be a banger. Great stuff as always Mav!
If wind is blowing north or south then put your chimney east/west and vice versa. If it’s east/west winds then put it north or south and the changing wind is less likely to blow the smoke in
He had it slanted. That was the problem. Air traveling side ways slanted met and pushed it back. If he had it come out and curve up and put wind cover around that would help as smoke is the first thing hard lesson to learn about fires or in his case he learned a lesson. Smoke before fire. Learn how to control smoke first before learning how to make fires.
that's what i was thinking... like uh, Mav, why don't u just turn the tent 180 degrees 🤷♂ may not completely solve the issue but it would've helped immensely
I run the winnerwell nomad large stove in my hub. 3.5 inch stove pipe. From what I understand the smaller ones have a hard time keeping up. Especially with the smaller pipe. Go for the large and you’ll be cookin all night my man. Best purchase I’ve made when it comes to my heat source.

tips for the stove in case you wasn’t sure. the knob on the pipe is the damper you want to leave that wide open when you’re starting the fire and trying to make as much heat and flame as possible and when you get it to a temp you like you close it down and it will slow the fire down and make it burn slower and longer, when you need to put more wood on you open the damper and put wood on let it take back off good and then shut the damper back down. i hope this helps.

I feel your pain with the smoke !! The first couple times ice camping I got smoked out in the middle of the night and was so frustrating. Every time your out you will learn something new . Tips .. a wind deflector is a must on the end of the pipe , bring a piece of plywood to put under the stove to stop the melting that will happen when the stove is working properly and try and cover the whole ice in something to stop the heat from melting. Did a 4 day trip and when I left the floor had around 5 inches of water everywhere from the heat of the stove . All that water and being cold from the stove smoking us out all night really sucked .. happy fishing MAV
@21:02 mav you ask what day you do about the smoke and breathing? Rotate the house 🏠 to the opposite side and let the smoke stack be on the backside of the house so the wind pulls the smoke out of the stack and blow the smoke away
Hey mav, that was a fun adventure but I think you guys did the right thing by calling it and coming home early too cold thanks for sharing. You guys. Be safe out there.♥️🫶🙏👍🎣
Hello. I always live on ice. For such a tent you need a large stove with wide pipes. You shouldn’t have installed a grate if you decided to heat with brushwood; it caused soot to form on the mesh. and inside the pipes too. Another fun video - cheers, Mav ✌️ you gotta start getting standing dead wood when you can. That stuff you’re finding already on the ground will be wet and won’t give you much heat at all and will keep going out like it was in this video. As much wood kept in the tent the better too, you can imagine how putting a frozen piece of wood in the stove will dramatically drop the temperature so you’re constantly having to keep heating it up instead of heating the environment.
Beautiful backdrop of the trees and ice lake in Canada whilst fishing. One of the most beautiful countries on Earth. Canada loves & welcomes you. 🤙🏼❤️🏔️🛶🎣🏂
A little bit learned from Luke over there on Outdoor Boys: he tells of heat resistant silicone mat for underneath the wood stove. The travails. Guess it's what makes it all memorable at 5-10 years from now. Quite the fish there!
One of the things I noticed is that you had the damper in the chimney pipe wide open which is a no no. Close it off to 1/4 to 1/2 that will hold back the wind pushing the smoke back in and open the draft in front of the stove to 3/4 to full open. But the damper I seen was wide open the whole time which is a no no. So that alone will change how well it works.
Looks flipping cold out there..better man than I, I wouldn't be out there unless I was in that warm ice hut...as always great video thanks for the entertainment and adventure
Higher pipes, open damper and make sure you have a fresh air low coming in for stove (hopefully the Otter has a vent for that) will keep smoke out. That looks like a Winnerwell, they are good stoves. Also if you go with straight high pipes, get some wire to secure the pipe.

Great fishing! consider using a diesel heater from a 12 volt battery. apparently the problems you had with the stove didn't let you get a good night's sleep, that's sad. the stove turned out to be very dangerous because of the emission of smoke, because it is very bad for the lungs, we have quite a few fishermen burned from such a stove, having fallen asleep never woke up again. With a diesel heater you can sleep soundly all night with a full tank of fuel, it is a very comfortable camping option. And please tell me why you do not use multiplier reels like 13fishing, because with them it is much easier to take fish out of the hole. Regards, Almaz, from Kazakhstan.
For an accurate temp in that hot tent you need to get that thermometer down lower. Hottest part of that tent is up high. Down at sleeping level it’s considerably cooler.
You need to close that chimney damper to keep the wind from blowing back into the firebox. It will also keep more heat in the stove and not let it go out the chimney.

For an accurate temp in that hot tent you need to get that thermometer down lower. Hottest part of that tent is up high. Down at sleeping level it’s considerably cooler.
Mav you should get a pair of rechargeable heated gloves. They are amazing!!
You need to close that chimney damper to keep the wind from blowing back into the firebox. It will also keep more heat in the stove and not let it go out the chimney.
Absolutely awesome as always some really nice fish
