    late 14c., sedule, cedule "ticket, label, slip of paper with writing on it," from Old French cedule (Modern French cédule), from Late Latin schedula "strip of paper" (in Medieval Latin also "a note, schedule"), diminutive of Latin scheda, scida "one of the strips forming a papyrus sheet," from Greek skhida "splinter," from stem of skhizein "to cleave, split" (see shed (v.)). Also from the Latin word are Spanish cédula, German Zettel.
    So, it seems that the 'correct schedule' pronunciation depends on whether you are Ancient Greek (USA) or French (UK). :-)

    I believe the reason we pronounce "Schedule" as "shedule" is because English is largely derived from old German where "sch" is pronounced "sh". Technically, we should pronounce "school" as shool" (from the German Schule) but we don't because we like to be inconsistent :)

    • @peteraustin687
      @peteraustin687 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      incorrect. It comes from Old French cedule, from late Latin schedula ‘slip of paper’, diminutive of scheda, from Greek skhedē ‘papyrus leaf’. The word 'school' comes from Old English scōl, scolu, via Latin from Greek skholē ‘leisure, philosophy, lecture place’, reinforced in Middle English by Old French escole.

This would involve ripping out yards of copper pipe, hot water tank, immersion heater, change the entire central boiler, replace three sinks and a bath and so on. Mixer taps still need to get hot water from a boiler (unless you have a hot tap with its own water heater) so how quick they are surely depends on how far away from the boiler the tap is.In my case the kitchen and downstairs wet room are about as far apart as they can be so hot water takes a long time to reach them.

    What no one asks about the mixer/two tap argument is - why are you heating the water so much (using all that energy) only to add cold water to cool it back down again? It's a simple lateral thinking implementation of logic, yet I've not seen one person ask why they heat the water to scaling temperatures?
    You spend all that energy to heat up water to - what 60°C (140°F) for it to cool in the tank, cool in transit and then add cold water to actually make it bearable to use, why not heat to 40°C-45°C (104°F-113°F) or whatever you feel is right, and not add cold water?
    It's pointless putting so much heat into it because its not enough to use as boiling water in a drink and too much to use in any application, including washing machines because they all heat cold water anyway, plus they wash at 40°C most of the time, and if not they'd heat the water as necessary...
    You're wafting massive amounts of power in a pointless wasted effort to heat the water to an unuseable level!
    This is not negativity or any form of attack, just a question based upon rational, logical, environmental and practical considerations.

    You're not negative. Of course after living here for ten years, there will be things that you don't like, but you're very positive about the UK. I like your channel, it's interesting to hear about the everyday differences between US and UK. I say schedule with the hard 'ch' 'sk' sound (I'm Scottish). Your accent is nice. I'd definitely forget some of the US states if you asked me to name them - I never learned a thing about the US in geography at school - but I'm going to test myself now and see how many i can name😆. If people aren't being constructive, please don't take it to heart.

    Hi! The English Language...As a student in the 60's here in Australia I loathed "English" as a subject. Having said that I had the good fortune some years later to work with a notable British repertory company(not as an actor, they had need of some dancers). Working with some of Britain's finest I acquired an appreciation and respect for "classical" English. I realise that the language has been changing for a thousand years but some basic tenets of usage would be really important for present and future comprehensions of the traditions of "English."

    You have the right level of self-deprication to be British. And your videos almost ALWAYS make me smile.
    We can disagree on mixer taps and the pronunciation of SCHEDULE, but we can do so in a friendly manner and with a twinkle in the eye! And we agree constructive criticism is one thing but abusive comments are inappropriate on TH-cam - or generally.

      I'm disheartened to hear you're not Team Mixer taps Raymond ;) ;) but absolutely - disagreeing in a friendly way is what helps us all learn and I am very grateful for all of the members of my community who have taught me so many things over this past year. And I hope people have learned a little as well!

    The English accent used to sound more like what an American accent is today, because it's been preserved. If you go to the West Country, Devon, Cornwall, Sommerset and even Herefordshire they still pronounce all the letter r's and they do in east Lancashire. This is dying out so you might have to go to a more rural area or speak to an old person with this accent. It's like a stereotypical farmers accent or pirates accent.

  • @majpanik

    We drink straight from a cold tap. I've never drank straight from mixer taps. So, for the kitchen at least, I find 2 taps more suitable. British thinking isn't "create a shortcut at all costs" like American thinking (think plugs! Ours may be bulkier and more complex, why? Because they're better!)

    I lived in Phoenix for around two years and one of my daughters has dual nationality. Have you ever made a broadcast about walking in the suburbs - I'm guessing that you live in the suburbs in the UK. My wife was amazed in Phoenix when she walked around half a mile to the shopping mall, pushing a pram with two other daughters in tow, that one or two (very polite & concerned) motorists would ask " Are you OK Mam?"

    • @Psmith-ek5hq
      @Psmith-ek5hq 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bill Bryson makes a similar observation in one of his books. The concept of walking even relatively short distances is alien to many Americans. When he moved back to the states for 7 years in the mid 90's, they invited the next door neighbours for dinner. . .and they drove there! He light-heartedly asked how they got to the supermarket, by light-aircraft? His attempt at humour seemed to go over their heads. He said pretty much everyone in the small town where he lived was within no more than 5 minutes walk to all the shops, but nobody ever did. Well apart from him that is. After a while the locals got used to his "eccentric" behaviour. Before this though, people who knew him stopped and asked if he would like a lift. When he politely declined. "well, if you're absolutely sure", they would say. And left him reluctantly, even guiltily, as if they were leaving the scene of an accident.

    I get your point about mixer taps but I wouldn't even bother debating it. We should just all accept the two things exist. I have mixer taps. They're no better or worse than individual taps because they're so far away from my boiler that the hot water doesn't get hot by the time I've washed my hands. So I mostly wash my hands in cold water.

    Team "mixer taps". I only have mixer taps, my parents now only have mixer taps. I agree. Separate taps is backwards. And if the filling sink thing is actually a thing, you can still fill a sink with a mixer tap. The water still flows to the same place.

    Pity those who feel the painful feeling of envy which is the root cause of any negative comments. The only antidote to envy is to devalue the object of one's envy, hence the negative comments. To address other's envy, the object of envy (yourself) is to ignore it completely and simply never mention it. There is nothing you can do to resolve their envy other than not respond to it.

    On states. I think I know the names of all US states, but knowing exactly where each one is would be difficult for me. For example, I know Michigan is in the North but placing it on a map would be a miracle. Ask anyone from the UK to try place every British county on a map, or even name them. An English person (like me) never remembers all the Scottish, Welsh etc counties.
