I've never tasted a Jujube before, but I planted a Li, Shanxi Li, Honey Jar, and Sugar Cane in January. Chopped them at 2 feet, no existing branching, so they were just sticks in the ground. They're growing like crazy, have been flowering for the past couple of months and are already getting loaded up with fruit!! Love the look of the leaves as well. Amazing little trees, and I can't wait to taste the fruit!!!
Hoping to see a best practices video on how to prune the jujubee trees. Some tend to just want to grow straight and not produce long lateral branches. I'm sure we all want to know how we can train those trees to be more like bushes. Thanks!

The Li I purchased is about 7 ft tall, very lanky, and has few secondary branches beginning around 38". I want control the height and get it to eventually bush out, but I'm worried about cutting it too short as I will lose most of my branches if I do. Also, you mentioned that you made a separate video of the cutting you did to prepare this tree for planting but I can't find it, could you provide a link?

I've only had dried Jujubes (found them in a farmers market). I have a honey jar in the ground and I plan on getting a sugar cane to pollinate. We need fairly early varieties here since we have a shorter growing season. The honey jar is currently blooming prolifically, but I don't think it's self-fertile.

I really like your jujube plant. I have one in my backyard that grew into a skinny stick-like tree, 12-15 foot tall. I cannot reach any fruits, can only wait until they fall down to the ground. Question for you, may I cut the top off now? My tree is matured, 10-12 years old. What should I do now? I really love the fruits, I will cut down the old one, then replace with a new bushy one like yours if I cannot make it shorter. Please help, thanks!
With a mature tree like that, you'll want to reduce the size over a couple seasons. You can buy a new tree if you want to start training the structure and get growth from from knee-high, but even then it'll be a result of how you prune it. Your tall tree should begin putting out side-branches lower if you cut the top off... maybe down to 8 feet? This is a big cut, so consider cutting down to 10-12 feet the first year, and 6-8 the second year. You'll trade some fruit production when you do that, but you can make that cut now or during the winter when it's dormant and it should be just fine.

I planted a Li Jujube before last growing season. It spent its first year just barely hanging on for dear life. However, this year it's not only growing quite well, but it's giving me a few fruits. I'm planning on planting a second cultivar this spring right beside it. Unfortunately, I'm still not sure which cultivar I should plant to help with cross-pollination. I ordered my Li Jujube in the second tallest size the website I found had. I wish I had gotten a smaller tree so that it could bush out. My tree is tall, but it is really only growing leaves on the top 8-12 inches of the tree. I'd rather it be more bushlike, like yours. I wonder if I can cut it back, like you did, even if it's been in the ground for two growing seasons.
+Spencer Pendleton you can definitely make a decent cut on your tree(though reduce the size over two seasons instead of one. Our Li has been prolific without another jujube. Check out Dave Wilson Nursery site for info on suitable/compatible pollinizers for your Li.
I put a Shanxi Li Jujube in this year and it is already flowering. I know I should rip those flowers off, but I am dying to try some fruit. Think it's a bad idea to leave some on? I want to make sure it develops strong roots to make it through our zone 6 winter. Thanks.
I think the high-and-tight (above grade) method is best for plants that hate wet feet (I see it mostly for things like avocados). Most of my trees are around grade with the graft unions facing north or north-east.
+NM Nate I’ve got a banana planting vid coming too. The high and tight also works where drainage may be an issue. That’s a GREAT tip to keep in mind on the graft. I’ve primarily focused on planting with lower scaffolding direction in mind, but will pay attention to graft union orientation too
.Happy 4th of July. I was planing on buy a Sugar cane Jujube tree. But I got to buy an Asian Guava and a Guamuchil tree. Sugar Cane Jujube as the name implied it is super sweet, but the fruit is smaller and round compare to Li Jujube. I love my Li Jujube, taste is amazing green or when they dry on the tree. I am surprised that more people don't plant these trees. Cameron, there is also another variety of Jujube that sounds very appealing it is called a Honey Jar Jujube. Same description super sweet fruit. I might get those next year. I'm running out of room :-(

Hello! There is NO fruit tree I'm aware of that should be watered daily. I generally water my trees once a week, and a couple times a week in the hottest times of the summer. The best way to tell is by getting an inexpensive moisture meter (like this one: amzn.to/2Z1hnD8). Test a few soil areas beneath your tree, when it reads almost dry, give it a good soak (very light flow, but for longer so the water doesn't run off and can absorb). That's going to give you the most accurate results. Watch my video on fertilizing your tree to give it the needed nutrients
I’ve planted 2 sugar cane jujubes, in Katy, TX, one lost all the leaves in 4-5 days and got kinda dried, and the other one survived about 3-4 months and same thing with that one too, do you have any idea or guesses why that happened! Thank you!
Hi Halil, I'm sorry to hear about that. It's a total downer to lose a tree for any reason! A couple possible causes initially come to mind: 1)When you planted them, it's possible the roots were excessively disturbed and they died from the stress. 2) Over or Under watered, or other drainage issues with the soil. There may be some other factors that played into it, but those two issues can contribute to the health of a tree when planting. Check out my video on how to plant a fruit tree

@@halildjencic1612 Consider planting half beneath the current soil level, and half above. Then mound soil up around the part above grade. This will allow for better drainage and avoid and drowning in poorly draining soil.Try them again! Jujubes are great!

Fruit trees are often OVERWATERED! Let the ground dry a little in between watering. I water once or twice a week, and have a nice layer of wood chip mulch covering the ground beneath my trees to help with moisture

Be careful you aren't overwatering. Yellowing leaves can sometimes indicate overwatering. Try deeply watering once or twice a week.

+The Fermenter it’s totally fine to leave on a few fruit (like 3-4).

I have ga 866 jujube plant last April it 5 feet tall grow 6 month , can I cut to knee side now or wait until tree domant thanks very much
Cut it now! You can make the cut when dormant too, if you want. Either time.

Fargo is USDA zone 4a which is a bit too cold in winter for Jujube. Jujube is hardy down to some 5
