    After a year in the ground, it's finally time for my Lang jujube harvest and taste test! I compare the Lang jujube to the more popular Li jujube. Our kids have LOVED harvesting and eating jujubes, which taste great across their stages of ripening. The jujube is a very drought and heat tolerant plant (thank goodness, with the temps we had this year!), and do great in many climates. The Li and Lang jujube produced an excellent crop this year, and we're excited to share with you!

    We have been growing chestnuts for 30+ years and selling them to the local Asian market.
    About 6 years ago, the new man they hired handed me some jujube and said. "you grow these" I looked into them, and asked around and people said they didn't really grow well around here. I told them what I thought next delivery. Then the guy called the owner over and he said "you come see my house tree"
    Well, his tree was loaded with probably 500 fruit and was in about 100 sf of space. It looked to be 15 yrs old or so. A Li, of course.
    So, at 60 years old, I finally started planting them. We got a small crop last year and it's pretty exciting to have a new addition to the other things we grow. Wish I had started them 30 years ago. Have 11 grafted now and maybe 25 growing as root stock for grafting.
    What a great tree to plant. Great family too.

    Your Jujube trees look great! I am planning on planting my jujubes soon. I got them from the Nursery in January and they are bare root but in pots already (no leaves yet). I Plan to prune/cut them to 20 inches from the ground also like you did but I am tremendously petrified at the thought. Would you please make another video showing the growth habit of your jujubes. I would like to see the way the branches grew (and from which node of the tree) it grew from. I am hoping your sharing of the way your trees grew will give me the confidence in pruning my jujubes. Thank you in advance. God bless and take care always.

    • @TheBusyGardener

      Make the cut, Lise! This initial pruning cut is best done as the trees are young, vs. the stress it would add to a mature tree. I've got some other jujube vids which should help you gain the confidence! Here is a vid of when I first made the pruning cut on the "Lang" jujube: th-cam.com/video/tS2M6chPEhI/w-d-xo.html

    Hi busy gardener. I bougth a lang jujube for the north of France. The climate is similar to south england. When was the harvesting time for you? Do the Lang jujube are too much acid when not fully matured (some green left)?

    • @TheBusyGardener
      @TheBusyGardener  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Congrats on your tree! The "Lang" needs a pollinator (like "Li") to reliably set fruit. For us, harvest time begins in September. I haven't found immature fruit to be especially acidic. More like unripe apple in my experience.

    • @TheBusyGardener
      @TheBusyGardener  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The kids seem to grab them at all stages, lol. I prefer them firm and brown (before they wrinkle), and a bunch of the ones that weren't on pruned branches remained on the tree till then. I like them as sweet, but as juicy-ish as possible.

    • @Fostenel
      @Fostenel 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TheBusyGardener I've refined what I look for a little. I like them the best just after the whole thing softens up. They don't necessarily need to start to wrinkle. If they dry to much, they start to get hard, at which point I don't care for them as much.
      I just sent some home with my GF last weekend, and she said her Aunt like's them best when they're green and juicy. I don't know if my trees are different, but every single one I've had that wasn't brown and soft had a slight green tint to the inside, had and unripe flavor, and weren't very juicy to me.

    Hi, I just bought two 15 gal jujube trees (sugarcane and ga866). I don't have a big backyard, I'm wondering how far does the 2 trees has to be away from each other? Or what's the closest distance I can plant them from one another? I also bought a fuyu and saijo persimmon trees, 2 guava tree. I want them all planted towards the back fence. Which is probably about 60 linear ft. I would love your inputs. Thanks

    • @TheBusyGardener
      @TheBusyGardener  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You normally want cross-pollinating trees as close as possible (or as close as your landscape layout/design allows). I've got my jujubes planted 3 feet apart, from trunk to trunk. I don't see any issue planting those trees at the back fence line, as long as you keep anything which needs its neighbor's pollen planted near (ideally next to) each other.

    Jujubes have two types of branches, annual (that fall off in the winter) and permanent. The fruit only grows on the annual ones, which by their nature can only be "this year's growth". But permanent branches can also be this year's growth, yet the fruit won't form on them, only other annual branches. So it's not completely accurate to say that jujubes grow on this year's growth. They grow on annual branches. :)

    Not sure if anyone will see this, being a year and a half old video, but I have a question about jujube trees. I've seen online that trees should be given 30' space from structures and 50' space from underground water lines. Does this apply to trees intended to be kept smaller, maybe in the 10' to 15' max range? Or is this for trees that are left to grow unchecked? I wouldn't think a tree that's kept small due to pruning would extend roots out that far to be a problem, but am being cautious. Thanks to anyone that reads this!

    • @TheBusyGardener
      @TheBusyGardener  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Generally speaking, a smaller tree isn't going to extend roots to maximum distance. That said, some species are far more invasive and spreading than others. Google any type you're considering planting near vital structures!

My honey jar has stayed at around 5 feet tall after 10 years and I haven't pruned it. My Sherwood has shot up around a foot or more a year, requires a ladder to pick from, and I regularly prune its growth.
