Turkish Fashion: Talent Amidst Chaos | Documentary

  • Turkey is a country with a rich fashion history and culture. It is known as a producer country with factories that manufacture the clothes of some of the biggest fashion brands in the world. Despite this, there isn’t much coverage on the fashion scene within Turkey. This documentary focuses on the fashion creatives and professionals specifically in Istanbul, Turkey. Turkish fashion designers have to jump over so many hurdles to achieve success - earthquakes, natural disasters, political unrest, a very volatile currency and more - yet, they persevere and see the positives in life.
    As a Nigerian that grew up in Nigeria, I have always had an outsider’s view on the fashion industry. Fashion week is glamourised and the most famous shows take place in New York, Paris, Milan and London. Even when fashion history is discussed, the designers mentioned tend to almost always be from Italy, France, USA, or the United Kingdom. It is as though the promotion of global fashion was erased to promote a narrative of western fashion supremacy. This is inherently the problem with the way fashion is covered. The purpose of this documentary is to start a series of films that cover fashion in regions of the world that are not covered extensively by western fashion media. Fashion is a global industry, and the coverage of fashion should represent this. With time, the ultimate goal is to create a space that people visit to watch content about regions that they will not see on any other western media platform.

    When I lived in Egypt I discovered the good design and quality of Turkish goods. A few years later I found out that as you said, Turkey is the # 1 manufacturer of knitwear to Europe. I still have a long knit cardigan from Turkey I bought in Port Said Egypt and the quality is excellent. Turkey deserves to have world wide recognition for their very talented designers and manufacturers. I love the decor of the first Turkish woman you interviewed and the dress the 2nd woman who designs and operates a high end jewelry store.

    Fantastic! I love how you really brought us into peoples’ homes and shops, and lingered… I felt like I was really getting to know these fantastic, interesting women! Gorgeous shots around Istanbul, they made me yearn to go there again. It’s compelling to think how Istanbul is becoming a fashion educational center for truly fascinating parts of the world that the West ignores. Such rich and remarkable textile/weaving/embroidery histories in all the Central Asian countries… my brain is ignited thinking of all their ikat and suzani techniques brought into modern gear. What a great job Ayo!!! I hope you’re really pleased with your result, and that you get to do more journalism like this!!

      Thanks for watching, also not everything is about money haha - I really just wanted people to learn about Turkish culture through the documentary so the more people that see it the better, and I can't achieve that behind a paywall. I'll put the extended interviews on my Patreon.

    I honestly think the biggest problem for the smaller fashion weeks is fatigue. As consumers of fashion at the highest level, you, I, all of the people that follow it intently, simply cannot follow another 5 to 10 weeks worth of shows per year. We have so much to get through already, that most people don’t even see everything in the four major fashion weeks, let alone Copenhagen, Tokyo, Seoul, Istanbul, Lagos, South Africa. I know I don’t anymore, I dont have the time nor patience.
    Realistically these upandcoming fashion weeks would be better advised to invent their own type of publicity rather than try to copy a system that despite trying is now failing because of fatigue and because of lack of funding for smaller designers. London is currently the most well funded fashion week for small designers, because of all of the different funds and grants, but even there, it’s near impossible to keep a business going profitably.
    If these designers, with the major fashion weeks and grants to help promote and finance them can’t stay in business, there are fundamental errors in the fashion week system that need to be solved. If the smaller fashion weeks can solve this problem, they will overtake.

      That is true, now that pre-fall and resort are seen as proper seasons too there's just literally no time for these other cities to stand out.

    • @FashionRoadman
      @FashionRoadman  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      This is a very good point you raised as always! Because now that I think about it, the only reason I follow every show in the major 4 fashion weeks is because I review a lot of the shows but after following the 4 i'm so exhausted I have to take a week break from fashion in general just out of fatigue. So adding more fashion weeks we need to follow can be challenging considering they will probably get limited attention.

    Thanks for making this video! It was really cool to know more about how the fashion scene is going in other countries! I travelled to Istanbul in 2016 and while I didn't find a lot in terms of fashion, as you say it is an artisanal city with with a lot of beautiful traditional arts and crafts. I wonder if they have any interesting new menswear brands coming up too - since the only Turkish designer I can think of off the top of my head is Umit Benan who started with menswear. Also tell me you did try the lokum there, it's so much better than what we have in the UK - I miss it!
