Great video and I too like this new version. It does have the ability for a Route you create to follow the track. Once created you right click on the route if using the app or press the down arrow on route in the app and select Route Operations/Optimize Route/For Driving. It will then follow the track rather than be a straight line.
I've dropped all these options for an amazing App that's free. A French traveller showed me the app she was using.... It's a CZ App and you load AU maps. Beats everything I've used the passed 6 years
likely one of the many maps who uses OSM, just need to choose the one which suits you best, I'm not a big fan of the OSM maps tough but for free definitely best option.
You're two for two with me today. Been a long time user of Exploreoz, but the update, last year I think it was, really pee'd me off. It complicated the entire system IMHO and been buggy and difficult to navigate. Downloaded MMA, the maps are a bit expensive ($100 just for Vic), but played around with it and very nice. I made my next track on my PC and it synced to my iPad ready for a few days time. Worked out how to convert it from a track to navigation, join tracks because of stuff ups marking them, much simpler. I hope this system remains the same. Simple. I like simple that does the basics well. MMA does it.
100% agree, mate initially I was quite excited about EOT but it's still too complicated, missing basic features like exporting a waypoint from the app and has quite a few bugs with every update
Nice review. I will certainly try MemoryMap. So far I have been using MapOut. There I have hundreds of Tracks nicely organized in Folders by Country, Activity etc. They all can be hidden or shown, imported and exported in standard GPX format. Planing of routes can be nicely done by drawing with the finger on the map. Either by following ways on the map or free form. There is also a very efficient search function which searches not only citys but almost the complete metadata of the maps. And everything of course off line. Track log is also very efficient and has a very low battery consumption (iPhone). Sure worth a try.
I was definitely going to download the explore Oz app because you seem to like and recommend it, I have a hema hx 1 and found it so useless I had to get my paper maps out and threw the whole device out the window, charger and all. Explore Oz asked you to do a review, you recommended it, now hema are paying you and you recommend them now
Hm, ExplorOz never asked me to do a review. However, I spent quite a bit of time advising them free of charge and giving them tons of improvement suggestions in the hope the app could get to a level where I like it, as the maps are great. When I did the review, the app was relatively stable, and I had not to many issues besides the shortcomings I mentioned. But we are talking about software, so any update or change can break an app, and unfortunately, EOT had many updates and issues, as you can see. Hema never paid me, by the way, are you referring to MemoryMaps? Memory Maps paid me as a consultant to improve their new Memory Map for All app, and many of my suggestions are implemented. They never paid me for a review. Not to mention that I have always used Memory Maps or the old Hema 4x4 App (which is Memory Maps) as one of my favourite and most stable apps for the past 11 years. If you want me to stick to my opinions and outcomes even if things change, I, unfortunately, can't help you. Software Development is a fluid thing, and things change. Look at Hema, the Hema 4x4 app was a good app; Hema Explore at the end (after quite some issues at the beginning) was a good app. They moved to Hema 4x4 Explore, which isn't very good in my book. Things change, mate; that's life, and I called it as I saw it at the time hence I always mention the version number in my reviews. I think nearly every GPS Navigation app on a tablet, especially EOT and MMFA is better than a Hema HX1.
@@AlloffroadAu I can’t bring myself to spend any more money on hema, I’ll just have to give explore oz a go and hope for the best. Thanks for the info. Cheers
I would also not spend money on Hema besides the Maps through MemoryMaps. Since the old folk handed Hema over to their kids, it all went downhill. They lost me when they stopped supporting the good older Hema Explore app and had it not working for six months after OS updates yet charged subscription money, the new Hema 4x4 Explorer is just a mess, and I'm not sure they can get my trust back again. As I said, I still use Explor Oz and like the maps, especially for exploratory drives. I wish they could get it reliable and fix the existing usability issues.
Thanks Stefan I really love the new ground up designed MMfA app on iPad mini, iPhone, macbook and I wasn't aware of the refreshed app until I saw your video (was still using the original MM) ..... and I even now have it running on a Garmin Overlander too. I installed it as an Android sideload and it was actually painless to setup (I know basically nothing about Android units as I'm Apple blooded). However, the display, portability and magnetic charging and functionality of the Overlander is quite good so I'm pleased to have perhaps my favourite improved nav app in MMfA working on it too now. Cloud syncing routes and waypoints worked perfectly first time. The only downside I've found so far is I haven't found a way to export a route from MMfA to Garmin Explore directly from app to app within the Overlander unit so for now will continue to either export synced route from MMfA on iPad mini and import to Garmin Explore account on the iPad mini then sync the Overlander when internet connection is available. And for offline transfer I have found an app called Zapya works quite well on both the iPad and Overlander to directly transfer GPX files from iPad to the Overlander directly using the ipad's wifi hotspot for when there is no internet connection. Thanks again for your interesting and honest content - Steve
Glad you made this update video, as I had ExplorOz as my top offroad map app to get due to your previous video and recommendation. I haven't bought it yet as I have my Hema HX-1 device when doing touring locally. But my plan was to get the ExplorOZ app and pay to download the maps onto my iPad just befofe I go to the Simpson Desert next year. But if it is that buggy, I'll give it a miss, and look into Memory-Maps instead. So between my Hema HX-1, iPad with Memory-Maps, and my iPhone for back-up maps (plus paper and book style maps), I should be covered for the trip. Thanks for the update. 👍 Quick question: I use an iPhone and iPad, but when it comes to laptopcs, I prefer Windows. And my Polaris head unit in my 4WD uses an Android OS. I plan to have the Memory-Maps on all these devices for back-ups and pre-planning (laptop). And if I pay for any downloadable maps on Memory-Maps on my iPad, do I have to pay for the same map(s) for each of the other devices and/or the different OS? Or just once?🤔
Good question, and I’m not sure as I never looked into that. Best to ask MM I think you get two licences with your purchase for one laptop and one mobile device. Memory Maps with Hema Map Pack is better for the Simpson than EOT IMO a better overview and more of the landmarks and campsites on them. Yes, I recon with that 3 devices, you will be good set up.
Im a very happy user of ExplorOz traveller. Have to assume this is a sponsored video considering these bugs no longer exist and he obviosly has operator error. If your happy with oldschool raster maps with no zoom detail, no places no nothing them hema and memory maps are perfect for you.
@@AlloffroadAuwhere do you download your maps onto? And what enables you gps when out of cell range (eg Simpson). I’ve just bought a new head unit (pioneer DMHZF9350BT) but can’t download anything onto it, just use with CarPlay or android. Looking on the Hema website the head unit is compatible with the Aerpro - AMHXD3 (still waiting to hear from memory maps as to whether it can operate on the head unit. Just trying to wrap my head around where the maps are downloaded onto and if can use the CarPlay through iPhone to run MM or if I need to buy an iPad or tablet to download maps onto and just use that for maps. So confusing atm. Thanks Stefan
Another very good practical assessment Stephan, keep up the good work, I have found you to be the go to guy for basic 4x4 everyday issues. Very timely video as I have recently been looking at updating my Navigation App as I am not happy about subscription entities, who want access to your data files and you have to pay them, I mean seriously?
Thanks, will do! Yes, I did not mention that ExplorOz need always access to your App, which is quite unusual, MMFA only while in use. If you are concerned about privacy, EOT is probably not the best.
Have been using OzTopo but it’s only for Android. Really good actually. As I use Apple for everything this video helped me a lot. Used your link and code. Off this weekend in Wiluna to give it a try. Thank heaps Mate
Thanks Stefen, I thought I was bad with 13 different types for apps for maps...lol.. May as well make it 14, memory maps was always a dirty Apple word, looks like they are moving to the light...lol.. Love they also have a LINUX version too, means I will definitely have a look.. Again, thanks for your thoughts and demonstration on the app... appreciate it.
I always like memory maps as it was the most stable GPS app what I did not like is that it was lacking behind, was a bit outdated and had very little updates. This seems to be over now and we will get more updates and I certainly like the new features however I would have used a different design and user interface but still find it much easier than Explor Oz
@@AlloffroadAu funny thing when I was checking it out, Feb 2013 I setup an account with Memory Map, didn't even realise...lol... I did have an iPad back then though... I also agree, ExplorOZ has always been something you have to know what you are doing or you do get lost, like an IT application for IT Nerds, probably why I have been using ExplorOz for so long.
Be great to see a video on how you use maps pre, during and post trip. Love all the technical and would to get ideas on how you use the app on road. I have been using the Memory Map for ages, never noticed there was a new version with the "for all". Wonder why its a new version and not just and update to the previous one, if they are both free. I use MapOut for vector (free) and Memory Map for raster with the Hemma maps. Have not splashed out for the topo ones yet.
Thanks for the ExplorOZ explanation. Okay, under yor recommendation I have now bought the full sweet of Hema (via your link!) and ExplorOZ maps to prep next months Ghan to Poepels Corner Adventure. Can you please share with me the track logs in your Simpson Desert folder?
@@AlloffroadAu I did try that bt nothing came up. Is there a map series on the Simpson or do you just mean within the Hema 1:250 collection of Australia?
Memory-Map have put up the 2022 Hema maps, $99 or $49 for upgrade. The 2022 update is the same as the Hema 4WD app update just published for free, so effectively you are paying a $49 annual subscription for Memory-Map as opposed to a "once of" $99 for the Hema 4WD app. Kevin
not really knowing how many changes Hema makes I’m happily stay on the older version for a few years. If you always want the latest maps you obviously have to pay but no real need to do so.
@@AlloffroadAu I have a old version of Hema maps I use on Oziexplorer & updated ones on iOs Hema 4WD app. The point I am trying to make if you are only after up to-date Hema maps it is better value to have the Hema 4WD app(once of cost) rather then Memory-Map(paying for updates)
I see, that has Pro's and Cons many users, including myself, were very upset after Hema 4x4 some time ago updated the maps with their new sanitised version without warning, I still also use the 2015 Hema maps on MMFA as it has a lot of station and older tracks now erased from Hema Maps. Given MM also stopped development of the old App, I think the Hema 4x4 will soon be obsolete.
I didn’t agree with your “explorer AUS” recommendation last time…… this recommendation was probably better even back then….. I don’t really do that many remote trips… so paper maps, google maps and signs on the roads is enough for me.
Great summary Stephan. I’ve downloaded MMFA but trying to distringuish between the old Hema 4WD Map app, both similar. It looks like MMFA will be a little bit more stable. I didn’t like how in the Hema 4WD Topo map app you couldn’t sync back to a cloud basis. I’m still trying to work out how to sync between MMFA and my MacBook .Tells me it is syncing but no data has transferred across.
I actually like that they did not try to reinvent the wheel however I would have gone with a different layout and user interface. There should be an option to force sync but maybe that is coming in the next final version as I'm on a beta. First sync from your mobile device and then from your MacBook.
Great clip very informative as I have just started to explore the cape with my 4wd. If I may just a slight correct to one thing you said it would be that you recommend 128GB of Ram but I think you mean 128GB of storage as in hard drive space, Ram is a different thing that does not come in those sizes on tablets, phone and most computers.
yea it's a pity, I did not have many issues in the first year but now bugs just seem to shift from version to version, good as secondary app I don't rely on but not as only or sole map anymore.
Brilliant video , as are all your productions.....I am very non tech......Question I am putting a KenwoodDMX9720XDS head unit, it can take 4 camera views, apple compatible, can i run this programme on ther and also run the programme on an Apple pad. I,'m not sure of how to connect. I do like Explore Oz up close love the red track lines for detail, great when on motorbikes etc, I do use Billygoat on bike, and Gaia, but in simple ways... I'm un tech Thanks Stephan
You can run the GPS software if your devices is Android or iOS however, non of the app is Apple Car Compatible and I'm not familiar with the Kenwood unit so can't give any advice there
I don’t use CarPlay much and think it would make more sense for a turn by turn navigation app but still think it would be a worthwhile option for many and will suggest that again.
Great videos love your information. One thing I found quite annoying is that navigation apps don’t play through your Apple car play. Having spent lots of dollars on a modern head unit you would think the apps on your phone would all play. Does this multi maps allow that function?
Yes, I agree, but on the other hand, I have just been in Europe and hired around 20 different cars through car sharing, and CarPlay had so many issues losing connection on every single vehicle, so I'm not sure if it's such a great idea.
Thanks for the detailed review, two things that can't work out (1) if I buy the HEMA maps can I use them on iPhone, iPad and my Mac at the same time? (2) if I buy the HEMA maps through MMFA and decide later I want to change to another app do I need to buy them again or do I own a license to the HEMA maps? Cheers
Yes to number one it's a single user licence so as I understand you can use it on any of your own devices. I don't think you can use the maps in different apps unless they support MM maps.
@@AlloffroadAu response from MMFA in case anyone else is wondering the same thing "This license is specifically for the Memory-Map applications and the maps would be in our QuickChart format, so they would not be transferable to another app."
@@benmmm7359how does it work with a tablet or iPad? I get that it would allow gps through the head unit but how is it connected to devices? Is it wired or signal?
Hi Stephan, Thanks for the review. Not sure if you can help, but I already have the Hema maps can I use these with Memory Maps for All, or do I have purchase again?
Great information. very informative. is there a setting to stop a samsung tablet auto dimming via memory maps. i've started using it based on your advise but ii have to keep touching the screen to keep it visible ?
Very interesting information, thank-you Stephan! I have purchased the HEMA iOS App many many years ago, but I'd like to change over to MM4All, am I able to get a credit for the HEMA maps that I already 'own'?
Hey mate, I could not answer that, but I would assume not. However, may be worthwhile asking Hema. MM4A is for free, and they make money via the Maps, so if they honoured purchases via Hema directly, it would be an impossible business model, especially as Hema now does not sell you any digital maps but only the use via a yearly subscription even for their rater maps who don't really receive updates anymore.
Thanks mate, after buying a hema gps, I find it almost impossible to use and I think an app on my phone might be the way to go. I can't figure out how to show a route on hema, the "directions" are always "as the crow flies" and no route you can drive. Very frustrating for a $700+ unit
yea, I was never impressed by any of the dedicated GPS devices, for route planing on tar I use Google anything else I use MemoryMaps together with WikiCamps
An informative video but I am a little confused. Are the maps in the Hema Map Pack the same maps that I use on my Hema Explorer app? If so what would be the point of paying for the map pack and using MM if you already have the same maps. Also, if you create a route on your pc, can you transfer it to your iPad?
yes same maps but different better app, old Hema Explorer is a old version of MM new MM for All has many new features. Yes you can easily transfer stuff you do on PC to ipad or iphone via sync.
I wish there was a way to import the HEMA maps into GaiaGPS. It's probably just because I've been using it for longer, but I find the Gaia GPS interface easier to use than MMFA, but the lack of map layers in Gaia is it's biggest weakpoint in my mind.
yea sadly Explore Oz just let me down too often. On a recent trip, I had reception only for a short while and that triggered something in EOT and the app would hang on the load screen. I could not use the app till I had reception again. Just imagine it's your only app, and it happened just after you left Birdsville to cross the Desert. I still like maps and some of the features, but it's just not an App you can rely on.
Re: Memory Map: After basically getting told that the product was too old (less than 4 years old) and they would not do tech support on a paid for software, their only advice was to buy the new product and buy all the maps AGAIN! Apparently the Company president does the Tech Support (badly), so I will never buy another one of their products. IF they had sorted out the issue of non starting software on a current OS and curent (but older) software, I would have probably bought the new system, but as I basically got told to go away or buy the new offering, Not a chance that Richard Stephens (claimed company president) will ever get another penny of mine. So as a long term user, great when working; buy something else if problems. My advice is go with a better system to start with, something non subscription.
hm I don't understand your review, MM is free software, the Maps are not subscription based and I used maps I purchased 10 years ago on the new MMFA. From a development point you can't always make old versions work on new a OS that is something you need to complain to the OS developer as they make code changes which breaks old code. At some stage it does not become feasible to keep updating old versions and make it compatible. Hema did the same with the old Hema Explorer app only that their new replacement was inferior and there was no migration path between both.
Hello. I was thinking about buying the Hema 4WD maps from your link. Is this still available or is there an updated version? I will be travelling Great Central Road then toward Marble Bar on Gary Junction Road. Will those maps cover that area? Do I have to buy a tablet or can I use my phone? Thank you for answering if you have the time.

Hi Stephan I have MMFA down loaded on to my tablet with gps and phone with hema maps. I want to use the tablet seperate to the phone with maps do you know how to make MMFA to show on the vehicle screen? I have a silverado zr2 and when my Android phone syncs to the car only certain apps are displayed on screen. Is there anyway I can use MMFA on the vehicles screen? Cheers Shane Barlow
unfortunately not, unless you bought Maps trough MM. One advantage is that you can also purchase and use the Older Hema Maps which are not sanitised so I still also have the 2014 Hema Maps, same you can do with older Topo's.
HI Stephan, some people have posted that you don't need a cellular (sim capable) tablet if it has a built in GPS chip for navigation. Do you know if a wifi only tablet with a GPS chip would work remotely with memory maps?

Timely release, was about to pull trigger on EOT this weekend based on your previous recommendation, just couldn’t decide on new cellular iPad or just an external GPS. My concern with MM is anything that is free is not sustainable for development and support
MM is on the market for over 10 years while the app is free in reality you need maps, to import maps you need a paid Navigator version and they earn money on map purchases so that would be of no concern
Tried really hard to purchase and download the hema maps after downloading the memory map app but ended up frustrated as usual. I’m starting to think electronic maps just aren’t for me
This app is 💩, bought new iPad mini and it keeps locking up. Search for location and you get blank map, have to zoom out a few times for map to appear then zoom back in
really that is strange which version? I have run it on a iPad Air and two iPad minis for 4 weeks 24/7 not a single crash or issue. Have you downloaded the full map and not just chunks?
@@AlloffroadAu latest iPad mini 6, it wouldn’t download the full Australia topo 250, it just locks up. Using other maps, search for a town on screen, like Echuca, and it zooms to 2km with blank screen. I’m now manually scrolling around the whole country to update map image. Even after doing that, with WA on screen search for Perth and search window locks up
Very strange, if you manually scroll around, you are using online maps. If you have a Laptop or desktop, you can download all maps there, put them on an SD card and then import them to an iPad that's how I got my 40GB of Map data to 5 devices. I did find that sometimes download speed from MM servers varies quite a bit best to do it at home on a fast internet connection. Make sure the first search is done with an internet connection.
This doesn't do it for me. the more he talks the more technical it gets. the best system to me would be .( From to destination,) for the day or whole trip. That works all over Australia EG: GPS I it takes more than 10 minutes to learn how to use it then it is Rubbish
Yes, it's technical because we go into advanced features; it's not a turn-by-turn navigation app but for off-road navigation. It sounds like Google Maps is for you; if you really go bush or remote; you will find out its limitations quickly, especially when it sends you down the garden path www.abc.net.au/news/2024-02-21/google-maps-tourists-lost-in-remote-area/103492986

Thanks again for your interesting and honest content - Steve
that's an interesting approach didn't realise you could do that. Good idea having a rugged devices and still run MMFA ....
Good thorough run-through. Lots of food for thoughts. Thanks for sharing.👍👍
Glad it was helpful!
Android has an app where you can use the GPS in your Android phone through the mock locations thing
Excellent update on the GPS Apps series. Thanks.
Very welcome
Have been using OzTopo but it’s only for Android. Really good actually.
As I use Apple for everything this video helped me a lot.
Used your link and code.
Off this weekend in Wiluna to give it a try.
Thank heaps Mate
Great to hear!
Yes I agree EOT is the only navigation app where I still frequently have to consult the manual or don't know how to do things without looking it up
Thanks for doing this update Stefan
I had ended up going back to mem maps a while back - must have been your product direction!
Have not splashed out for the topo ones yet.
original version was developed over 10 years ago and a lot has changed development wise so was much better starting with new modern code.
Thanks for the ExplorOZ explanation.
Okay, under yor recommendation I have now bought the full sweet of Hema (via your link!) and ExplorOZ maps to prep next months Ghan to Poepels Corner Adventure. Can you please share with me the track logs in your Simpson Desert folder?
look at the Hema Simpson Desert Maps on MMFA
@@AlloffroadAu I did try that bt nothing came up. Is there a map series on the Simpson or do you just mean within the Hema 1:250 collection of Australia?
Excellent expose' Stefan, thank you.
Very welcome
I still like the Explor Oz Maps and they are the only Maps you can't get anywhere else just reliability and usability of the app is the issue.
@@AlloffroadAu …. What about “ nearmap’
If I may just a slight correct to one thing you said it would be that you recommend 128GB of Ram but I think you mean 128GB of storage as in hard drive space, Ram is a different thing that does not come in those sizes on tablets, phone and most computers.
sorry my bad internal storage, not RAM no mobile device I know of is available with 128GB ram
Many thanks - again a very interesting & helpful video! Greetz from Europe
My pleasure! You guy's having a hot summer?
@@AlloffroadAu Yes, a very nice & hot Summer. Too dry though.
Thanks Stefan
I’ve had the same problems and I get the message “? Map failed to load” but I’m out in the bush and have no way to fix it
yea it's a pity, I did not have many issues in the first year but now bugs just seem to shift from version to version, good as secondary app I don't rely on but not as only or sole map anymore.
Brilliant video , as are all your productions.....I am very non tech......Question
I am putting a KenwoodDMX9720XDS head unit, it can take 4 camera views, apple compatible, can i run this programme on ther and also run the programme on an Apple pad. I,'m not sure of how to connect.
I do like Explore Oz up close love the red track lines for detail, great when on motorbikes etc, I do use Billygoat on bike, and Gaia, but in simple ways... I'm un tech
Thanks Stephan
You can run the GPS software if your devices is Android or iOS however, non of the app is Apple Car Compatible and I'm not familiar with the Kenwood unit so can't give any advice there
How about they make it compatible with Apple CarPlay so I have a decent sized screen to look at without having to add an iPad to my dash
Thanks for the detailed review, two things that can't work out
(1) if I buy the HEMA maps can I use them on iPhone, iPad and my Mac at the same time?
(2) if I buy the HEMA maps through MMFA and decide later I want to change to another app do I need to buy them again or do I own a license to the HEMA maps?
Cheers
Yes to number one it's a single user licence so as I understand you can use it on any of your own devices. I don't think you can use the maps in different apps unless they support MM maps.
@@AlloffroadAu ok, thanks, so frustrating that there isn't one common mapping protocol...

"This license is specifically for the Memory-Map applications and the maps would be in our QuickChart format, so they would not be transferable to another app."

Exhaustive, as usual. Thank you.
My pleasure!
Which is the best navigation map for android car head unit here we go, waza or google maps?
Waze and Google Maps are good for on road would not use them for off road though. I also don’t use turn by turn for off road l.
@@AlloffroadAu waza is not working properly offline on my car head unit, so I am using here we go map. What about here we go map?
Thanks mate, after buying a hema gps, I find it almost impossible to use and I think an app on my phone might be the way to go. I can't figure out how to show a route on hema, the "directions" are always "as the crow flies" and no route you can drive. Very frustrating for a $700+ unit
yea, I was never impressed by any of the dedicated GPS devices, for route planing on tar I use Google anything else I use MemoryMaps together with WikiCamps
Have you ever used OziExplorer ??? Great Clip Stefan Thanks
not extensively as only windows and android, very powerful app but light years behind in usability and UI
@@AlloffroadAu Thanks.
Hi Stefan. Which navigation app would you recommend that can be used on apple car play
not much available for CarPlay unfortunately I think Gaia has car play but limited maps for Australia
briliant video
I wish there was a way to import the HEMA maps into GaiaGPS. It's probably just because I've been using it for longer, but I find the Gaia GPS interface easier to use than MMFA, but the lack of map layers in Gaia is it's biggest weakpoint in my mind.
yes I agree Gai User Interface is better than MMFA
We simply could not get on with Exp Oz. I am very happy with Australia Topo Maps but I think it is Android only.
yea sadly Explore Oz just let me down too often.
Is this still available or is there an updated version? it has no Apple or Android car play so I don’t think you can. I heard that that is coming at some stage though.
Is there a way to use my existing HEMA maps from my HN7 and older Topo maps on the app without downloading maps I already have?
unfortunately not, unless you bought Maps trough MM. One advantage is that you can also purchase and use the Older Hema Maps which are not sanitised so I still also have the 2014 Hema Maps, same you can do with older Topo's.
Can you use the App on a new iPhone? Or do you need a bigger screen?
yea definitely I also use it on a iPhone 13 Pro obviously the bigger the screen the better it is but iPhone is no issue.

I’m starting to think electronic maps just aren’t for me
just use the link in description, purchasing you only do once then its done

review of another Navigation app same as the other 8 Apps I reviewed previously

Yes, it's technical because we go into advanced features; it's not a turn-by-turn navigation app but for off-road navigation.
