Channing Tatum 'Gambit' Cajun Accent In 2015.
Channing Tatum's portrayal of Gambit has been a long time coming for fans of the X-Men comic book series. Originally slated for a standalone film, the project faced numerous setbacks, leaving fans disappointed. However, a brief but memorable cameo in the film Deadpool & Wolverine finally brought the character to the big screen, albeit in a much-anticipated yet truncated appearance.
Gambit, a charismatic Cajun mutant with the ability to charge objects with kinetic energy, is a character deeply rooted in Louisiana culture. The character's Cajun accent is a hallmark of his identity, adding a distinctive charm and flair to his personality. While Tatum, a native of Alabama, doesn't share Gambit's Southern roots, he has proven his ability to convincingly adopt accents in previous roles.
Unfortunately, the brevity of Tatum's appearance in Deadpool & Wolverine didn't allow for an extensive showcase of his Cajun accent. Nonetheless, the glimpse fans got of the character was enough to reignite excitement for a potential full-fledged Gambit film in the future.
With the character's popularity and Tatum's evident enthusiasm for the role, there's still hope that fans will one day see a more substantial portrayal of Gambit on the big screen.

"Whoo I'ma bout to makea name for myself "
I honestly think he nailed the Gambit role
😂😂😂😂😂😂
💀
He played the role of Gambit!!!
I always hear it as ""I'm aboutahmakeahname for muhself here"
"You just make sure people knowhahappenheretuhdae". Still sounds like butter to me.
"This is a bad Cajun accent"
Every Cajun on the internet: "ONE OF US! ONE OF US!"
Exactly! Me and my Couyons were lovin' it!
Well he did grow up in the Mississippi bayou
I met a friend from Louisiana and he saw the movie a day before I did. After I saw it, I asked him about Gambit accent and said it was great
I'm a lifelong Tennessee resident but I've got some buddies and who tha heck ain't checked out swamp people or something on TV or the net. He sounds damn good and my one buddy is a coonass and when he gets excited playing pool or darts this is him.
He sounds like he's trying to sound black.. and bro is WHITE.. his accent would be more southern. He has the dialect down.. but the accent sounds like he wants to sound black
Tatum nailed the accent, but at the same time I can't help but hear Deadpool asking him to repeat himself :p
"its been awhile since I watched sling blade, hit me again "
lmao no he didnt its horrible
It’s god awful
@@misstoasty1lmao he grew up in the bayou of Mississippi but his accent is horrible 😂 y’all are ridiculous
@@misstoasty1 It's clear he hammed it up a bit for comedic effect :) And no disrespect to Chris Potter's Gambit voice work from the animated show (and AJ. LoCascio's '97 version), but I thought Tatum's version was better with the whole Cajun/Louisiana Bayou tone.
As a Louisiana boy.
He did well
Fr?? I had no clue this accent existed I thought he was like Jamaican or something
@Spaceythewave now he is doing it from a comedic POV but he is not far off at all.
@@Spaceythewave Jamaican dialect is Patois and this is a Cajun accent. they both sound like how english sounds to someone who doesn’t speak english however are obviously quite different
He's alabamian
@@dRac_XII They sound a bit similar.
Such a hard accent to replicate. Idgaf. And dude genuinely killed it. Sounds like some of my kinfolk from Cajun country.
Yeah, it is not easy! You got to get into the right mindset. You say words like “dat” and “dis one”. He did a great job! Cause, Life don’t git much betta than dis!”
Pretty sure he grew up around it too
It was trash. And you are a moron if you liked it.
@@uncokeeyep, the Cajun Christmas thing was from his dad who is Cajun
Yeah everybody is Cajun now.
As someone with a Cajun lineage who has lived most of her life in central / south Louisiana, it made me so incredibly happy to hear the good ole Cajun accent in a blockbuster movie like this one - and one that was performed SO WELL.
I had made the joke to my friends that he "sounds like one of my cousins from down the bayou". My little Cajun heart was made SO HAPPY by his performance.
I love a good cajun accent...and my man nailed it!
He really did Gambit right in the movie....loved it! Gambit was a favorite of mine as a kid in the cartoon back in the 90's. It was a great surprise to see him pop up in Deadpool/Wolverine.
People are VERY divided over how well Tatum did the accent but IMO he did real good at it, if y’all ever heard the coonies from the backwoods of Louisiana y’all would know this right here is how they sound.
A lot of people from all over think that Louisiana has 1 accent. It does not. As a born and bred ‘Nawleanian, they sound different from deep bayou people and country Cajuns and north Louisianians even those from Baton Rouge sound different from everyone else. I have lived all over Louisiana, and all over the Deep South, up to VA, WV, FL and even Kansas ( the land of no accents!) so you pick up on accents when you’re trying to lose your own.
A lot of the complaints seem to come from New Orleans, and I get that. My mom's side of the family is from Metarie and they don't sound like that at all. But my dad's side is pure Cajun from around Abbeville, and this accent is dead-on.
Cher bebe!
What? I couldn’t understand your comment because of your accent
“Who is your dialect coach, the minions?”
Damnit, beat me to it 😂

That part had me cracking up

Bro, the line "I never knew who my daddy was, but I burst out of him ready" FUCKING killed, its the one thing that stayed with me lol
YES! that was probably the single funniest line in the movie!
😂 man had Deadpool confused the whole time. I love his whole performance just for that
This one 😂
Omg almost the entire theatre was laughing at that moment !
Bro me and my mama was tripping
Idiots: “this wasn’t authentic gambit”
“Authentic” gambit isn’t even a creole accent. Tatum did an authentic accent to where gambit would actually sound like in real life. He a goat
Exactly!
the gambit from the old 90s cartoon show had a weird french accent similar to Frenchie character's accent from the show The Boys.

within a serious film, it wouldn't work. It works because its parody
@@WhatisReal11 Nah, it could work. This rendition of gambit would just be a more comical feeling character, but if the plot was written well, it wouldnt matter.

@kristophermeharg7048, but then what did he fail at?
Accent? Check.
Fighting skills/choreography? Check.
Comic accurate outfit? Check.
Writing? (For a 4th wall break cameo, made to bring light to the difficulties fox studios' actors faced?) Check.
A passionate actor who cares about the character? Check.
What was your point?
@@kristophermeharg7048bro do you have any other input? I've seen you make this same snarky comment on multiple threads now. No one fucking cares.
Anybody from Louisiana that tell you this is good, ain't from no fkn bayou. He is a fkn horrible Gambit.
Funny thing abkut this is my grandfathers 1st language was Cajun French. He didn’t learn English until he went to school, he used to read me this book just like this. And “this and that and them and those” or as he said “dis and dat and dem and doze”
When I tell people the fact that the Louisiana accent comes from French people settling there, they're blown away. People think it's because they're back woods slow hillbillys. If you listen after knowing that fact you can hear the French in some of the words they say, say something in French with a country accent, you get Louisiana.

As a half blooded Cajun who’s mom’s family was full blooded, his accent was actually pretty good! It’s hard enough for me to talk with a Cajun accent so for him to do it is pretty cool

My favorite X-Men character as a kid and was BEYOND happy to see him in the movie in a comic accurate suit! By far my favorite part of DP&W. Now Marvel, give this man a solo movie, or AT LEAST another appearance in Avengers: Secret Wars. PLEASE!

What people don't realize is that his Cajun accent was pretty spot on. Some people wrongly seem to believe that it sounds like a cross between a southern accent and a Hispanic one.
Edit: The reason I said Hispanic is because of how Renee from True Blood sounded, guys.
If you ever took one drama class in high school you would know that a good accent alone doesn't create solid authentic characterization 😏.

I'm a Louisiana native and it brought back memories of my Cajun relatives. Channing Tatum did a great job with his Cajun accent.
From 22 Jump Street to Gambit, Channing Tatum memes never get old.
I never realized how much Cajun sounds like Pidgin from Hawaii. Thicker accent, but the cadence and pronunciation is pretty similar. I'm from Hawaii, and while I've been away long enough to lose the accent, it still comes out from time to time.
Damn, I can only hear Gambit during that poem read. So good!

I grew up reading the comics and loving Gambit out of everyone and made my mom find all the comics that had him in them as a kid but when I turned 10 or 11 and found out Channing Tatum was doing a Gambit movie I was so excited like my childhood is coming to life then I never heard of it again but yesterday seeing him in character and costume was perfect like that’s exactly how Remy sounded in my head just that weird Cajun where every emotion sounds the same😂 loved it I hope we get a Gambit film finally
He pulled it off..gotta give him props 👏
The Deadpool and Wolverine memes so far are so good 😭
As someone IN Deep South Louisiana, born and raised Cajun, coonass, and with natives, he sounds spot on

I’m from the deepest Cajun country land you can be from. We read the Cajun night before Christmas every Christmas Eve as a family. When I saw the movie yesterday (not knowing he was supposed to be Cajun) I thought he was trying to sound French or Nola at first. Then he said Cher which is undeniably Cajun. Dat gave me dem frissons. Mais t’bebe I could feel da gris gris.

He used correct phrases and had moments that were really authentic and some that didn’t pass for me. It’s a difficult accent to get right. People ask me all the time to speak with it (I can turn it on and off to some degree). I was raised in Galliano LA now live in New Orleans. Doesn’t get deeper Cajun.
Ain’t surprised he did so well, seein as he’s originally from around Mobile Alabama

I really hope we see Gambit again
Not from the US so I ain't gotta horse in the race, but I'll take the word of the other Cajuns that bro did well
Pretty spot on. It’s a very good attempt and isn’t cringey, which cannot be said for most Americans trying to do a traditional English accent 🤣
I mean if the British constantly got away with theft being derivative is fine by me both parties throw their stones in equal parts regardless

He Read IT RIGHT! This was played during Christmas time when I was growing up!
Americans are criticized about many things, but one that is completely undeserved is that "there is no culture", while the country has a huge, though not properly explored, cultural wealth. Local identities should be explored, exposed, and preserved more, not everything is about Texans, New Yorkers, and Californians (with all due respect to the people from those states).
This, and "my name is jeff" 😂 Tatum's a damn good actor man lmao
He IS Gambit 💯💯💯

That accent really worked out!
My uncle was Cajun. I distinctly remember at my 21st birthday party having a conversation with my mom about how I had just understood something he said for the first time ever. He sounded like Boomhauer.
To my experience with a family member who actually had a HEAVY cajun accent, the only thing that felt off to me with Tatum was that comparitively, my uncle spoke with a lot more gravel in his voice, and far more monotone. Otherwise, Tatum nailed it. Felt like they maybe even had him dial it back a bit for clarity.
I have that book. I’m Cajun. Lol
