- In this Hobby Cheating Tutorial we return to our Exploring Colors series (its been too long!) and we touch on the color brown. Though not a true color, its interesting and can be used in lots of ways in your miniature painting. Hope you enjoy!

The Buff description was very insightful. I first bought some a while back after seeing Sam L using it alot in mixes and never knew it was on the lighter end of the browns!
I really love the Wyldwood contrast paint from Citadel. It's fun to use and gives amazing results on textured models. And speaking of classical painters, one of their favourite paint colors was called Mummy Brown. If you thought making red pigments from crushed insects was gross well... Mummy Brown was something else.

I've underestimated brown for a long time, its a great colour with huge variety, especially for more naturalistic models and armies.

Brown isn't my favorite color, but it is among the most useful colors. It has a disproportionately high number of bottles in my paint collection. Sometimes you need red-brown maroons, sometimes khaki browns, sometimes dirt browns, sometimes nutty browns, sometimes purple browns, sometimes parchment browns... and sure, we *could* mix them, but it is so nice having them ready to go.
I don't disagree with that at all. :)
That's actually funny because I bet a good amount of us have disproportionately large numbers of brown paints. And I also love Wyldwood, but Cygor Brown has my love the most out of the Contrast Browns. They're all really great though.
Love this series. It provides so much insight beyond just "Here is how you paint x texture this colour". The video on purple really helped me out especially, so I'm looking forward to watching this one!

i love the discussion about using brown as a neutral, harmonious color. I really like vibrant, colorful models. Desaturated, gritty stuff just isn't my style. I want cartoony stuff. but i've been having difficulty trying to find a way to really make something appear colorful without appearing garish. I always use my little color wheel to try to use contrasting colors. but this makes me realize that as far as hue contrast is concerned, it might be a good idea to use a neutral tone rather than another color. That way I can draw the eye to the particular color I want people to be looking at, rather than confusing the eye just for the sake of maximizing contrast. and as you've shown there's a lot of variation in browns. while it's generally a warm color (thus making it better for contrasting with cool colors), I'm sure there's good ways to make it contrast well with warm colors, as well.

Yep, having neutral tones to keep the eye moving makes the rest pop more. :)
you need to understand, that simply using the opposite colour on the colour wheel wont give you a good nice looking contrast. if anything, it will make the mini look busy and oversaturated (e.g. if you take flat green and red) - it doesnt look natural. try using a desaturated greenish grey for leather to contrast with a bright red for example - thats one way to apply it that works better, imo.

@@BrickInTheHead hey, i am a big fan of premixed colours. yes, you might call it a scam because i can mix everything on my pallette bla bla... but i just like having consistently the same colour. also makes working on projects over very long time easier. (if you have a busy life, sometimes you cant paint in months)

I think an interesting topic, when discussing brown, is what hue we culturally assign to brown. As far as I can tell it is mostly oranges and yellows. So in my mind brown is a desaturated, yellow or orange.
Another related topic is how the names we use for colours influence how we think about them. When looking for a dark yellow shade for example, perhaps it is easiest to look for it among our brown paints, which isn't immediately obvious.
I tend to think of colours in terms of hue, saturation and lightness, and it is sometimes hard for me to discuss colours with other painters, perhaps because I come from a physical point of view, and not a painterly.
That's fascinating, I know there are big cultural differences with some hues, I had never thought of it with brown.
I just finish a mortarian base with just brown shades. I painted a dirty sand stone, this video explains the why, or color theory about how the base works. Thanks for your explanations on color.

I am painting my first models ever!!! And it is going to be a squigalanche, I started with zenithal primer coat and burnt umber and Scarlet mix as the base coat working up to oranges for the highlights. Then the techno-mancer releases this video and it makes me think I made the right choice for colors. Please keep doing these cool videos, your content is awesome!!

I’ve never knew just how old umber was, and a bit of history of the color. Understanding which brown to use in my arsenal is incredibly useful. I love going to the museum, but now my eyes are open to see things in paintings that I have never noticed such as the use of brown, as well as thinking about how to use the masters technique to enhance my miniature painting. Great video friend!

Your Exploring Colors series of videos are hands-down my favorite videos that you do, and brown has quickly been becoming one of my favorite colors to work with, because of the natural variety of tones in it. So this video feels very personal to me.
I would like to add that I think brown can be dynamic in the same way that purple can be, because brown can easily be red-brown or green-brown and still feel brown either way, giving it the warm/cold flexibility of purple but with a more subdued tone.
Totally agree, I think we short ourselves when we just stick to classic medium browns.
Always like the exploring colors and was waiting on this one. It's pretty quick and simple especially compared to the other colors but I learnt something still. I think brown is fantastic and thinned down Armour Brown by vallejo over a white undercoat really gives the impression that you are halfway done with a mini after 1 coat. Keep up the good work Vince!

I love using purple browns.
Because most browns are commonly made with the majority ratio of colour being yellow, purple being on the opposite end of the colour wheel it really helps to distinguish that type of brown, it's great for non human races.
Also you can get a pretty interesting brown from having a green base colour then putting a couple layers of brown wash.
Makes sense.

I never considered whether I like or dislike brown but I find myself using it whenever I need some neutral warm tones. I also like natural colors so brown fits right in there. All these little nuggets of wisdom from your videos really help me understand why things work and others don't.

Wonderfull video, thank you. Over the years I was surprised how much brown I actually use regardless of the franchise. Star Wars, Lords of the Rings, Warhammer etc brown is (almost) everywhere and I really started to appreciate it.

Here are two more corlor related ideas that I would love to see:
- Exploring Colors: Violet/Indigo - you partially covered it in the purple video, but I find violets to be widly overlooked as their own thing, not quite blue, not quite purple :) (Maybe one on Lime could also be cool? Not quite green, not quite Yellow, what to make of it?)
And as a broader idea:
- How to paint in pastell colors - so many miniatures are dark and grim, I'd like me some thoroughly bright ones for a change

YEEEEES MY FAVE COLOUR!!!! (edit) It makes me sad people don't appreciate it more tbh it's such a lovely colour. And there's so many things you can do with it! Like you mention it plays into a lot of other colours as well, I mean, you can see the different hues in a lot of browns and use them to really base your miniature, or ground your miniature in the real world (those are terrible puns I apologise). thanks again for a great video :D

As someone who is currently painting a 300 model Beasts of Chaos army, I approve of this video! This army is all about brown and bone and flesh colours. I’m using about 6 different browns and black, brown and orange inks to get a variety of colours, but still trying to look realistic. (as realistic as you can be painting goat and cow men).

Just happened to be on an old square base, he was extra from the unit of 30 I brought over and painted for my army. :)
interesting tutorial, feels like you could treat a brown paint scheme like a black and white one.
However, when you were painting that minotaur, I was really hoping for an accent color lol.
Yeah, if I was doing him for an army, I would have an accent color for sure. :)
so with the mix of brown, i try out a more blackisch brown for the wood, a more yellowisch one for leather and a more whitisch/yellowisch one for dark skin. maybe i try out redisch one for earth. but thx for the tipps with browns. maybe it works with AP speedpaints 2.0, too?^^
Sure, shouldn't be an issue.
You can also mix a nice range of browns from yellow, magenta and phtalocyanine green.
I have been experimenting with liquitex inks a bit: (15 yellow + 1 green + 1 magenta) results in a tone that is really close to umber. The strange thing is that by varying the ratios slightly, you can dance around umber and get really close to it from all directions, but it is always slightly greener, redder or yellower than true umber. (disclaimer: I do not have experience with mixing other brands of inks).
Then, if you add more red (6 yellow + 1 magenta), you get towards sienna.
It is strange that a very reddish brown or a yellowish brown are perceived as brown, but the moment it gets a bit greenish, we perceive it as olive green and do not call it brown any longer…
Absolutely, there are a lot of wonderful mixes for sure. Good tips.
I pulled out my box of "go to" paints, and I found that I have no orange paints that I view as worth keeping at the ready. That is, unless you count brown, which is my largest category.
Of the few paints I generally keep permanently on hand, at least one of them is brown, and a second brownish tone is never far from hand either.
THey are just always useful as a wonderful mid-tone neutral color, dirt, shadows, leathers, the list is endless. :)
This was an excellently timed video for myself; I have very high paint anxiety and it takes a lot for me to bite the bullet and paint. I recently have been attempted skin. Caucasian flesh is giving me problems. I am on attempt 4 and may be happy with how it is going (still need to up the contrast 2 levels). However, I also initially attempted darker skin and it blended so much easier. I started with African Shadow and then used the Reaper Dark Skin Tone Triad and it was amazing to see the difference. This video reinforced that observation so I may try to attempt other models that would be dominated, or could be dominated, by browns. It is also so deceiving to see you appearing to effortlessly blend all these colors while for me it seems impossible to get it down correctly. Hopefully I can stick with it and learn to do it with a brush rather than utilizing my airbrush and having it do it for me easily. Thanks as always for all your content!

I do wonder why you did not mention rust colours as a tint of redbrown? Fresh rust is very orange, but an old dark brown rust is visually very relaxing while giving off a very nice colour. Harmonious as you call it. Or do you consider rust a more red tone?
I would say it's true color is more red, but you are right, it's certainly a red/brown tone and a very nice one at that.

I'm surprised we didn't see a "green brown" in the sample pots used as a visual background for the first part of the video. Is there a particular reason? Do you for instance tend to not like them? Also, when does a brown-green become a green-brown (or the reverse :-)?
One quick thought: I like to think of brown as "more towards the middle" of the color wheel (for versions of that tool that have colors inside too, not just on the outsides).

So I don't really think of a difference between green/brown and brown/green, but the answer is "when it's true color shifts" I suppose. That being said, just random chance, I think green browns are actually quite useful, but I think Green is probably the color I use the least (at least warm, brown greens are, I use cold, blue greens all the time).
I think it may be a naming thing… if you produce a brown that tends towards green, we immediately call it green (“olive green”) but when you get the same amount of deviation into red or yellowish brown, we still call it brown…

Hey Vince, awesome video! It's my understanding that brown does appear on the colour wheel, as brown is at it's essence different values of orange (which you did cover in this video). This left me quite curious hearing your comment about green, purple or other browns - in your view of colour theory would you consider them as true browns or fitting some other label/term? Such a great video!
Sure, they are still browns, because you can achieve a brown tone with pigment through lots of different mixtures and additions. It's where the color wheel sort of breaks down, it's a reflection of perfect colors, but the actual paint doesn't always match that exactly.
I consider Vallejo German Medium Camo Brown to be the best generic brown invented by humans.
My style in general uses rich, warm colours. Not a fan of the washed out feel I get from zenithal+glaze sketching styles. And various browns are *fantastic* for keeping the warmth and feel of a miniature whilst also being natural or a darker line to separate sections of a model.
Makes sense, if you prefer a more earthy or dare I say, naturalistic palette, it's the go to. :)

Is Rhinox Hide purple-influenced? I was trying to highlight it by adding Buff, but I found it started shifting towards a greyish tone that I found unappealing. If buff is a yellow, that would make sense.
Do you have an alternate colour you'd suggest or maybe any Rhinox-esque tips? I love the paint, but this isnt the first time I've run into trouble using it as a starting point.
Yes, it's purple influenced. Any more neutral mid-brown that is more orange will work.
Nice tutorial thanks. Don't suppose you could do a tutorial on how to paint black skin (actually black, not just dark skin) with a comic book style blue highlight? I've been trying to work out how to for a Minotaur, but keep failing, it just ends up looking blue with black shading!

Makes sense that people don't list brown as a favorite color. Most of the natural world is in browns, except for plants and plants and flowers are higher up in regards than dirt and soil. All creatures crap in shades of brown so their is an instinct to move away from it.

I'm thinking of painting goblins in brown robes as this would naturally be their choice of colour to be unseen in gloomy swamps and forests... How would I go about making that visually interesting?
It's tougher, but the answer is make the skin and maybe some other elements have some strong pop colors, then the neutral robes will help to balance all fo that out. :)

Rhinox Hide from GW is great. Pro Acryl and AK Interactive 3rd Gen have a wide variety of browns of with very high opacity.

Hi Vince, i am searching for a Tank Brown (old Vallejo Model Air) equivalent. Vallejo Model Air Armour Brown has the same color code, but looks quite different to me, like a green-ish chocolate brown instead of a red brown. I actually went through three different bottles to exclude bad batch issues. Do you know if the color changed over time, but kept the same code? And can you point me towards an equivalent color? Thanks!!
Many of those colors have changed over time, I would look at something like Warm Brown from Pro Acryl and see if that matches what you want. That might be in teh right red-brown space.

Brown, if used as an undershading: It seems a great choice for a green armour. Is it also a good choice for a blue or a red armour or is there a better option?
Brown will give you a warm red. Not sure about blue though. Only one way to find out!
Red and Green, sure. Blue will be strange, because browns are usually quite warm and blue is by definition cold, that being said, you can get a dirty warm blue, which can be useful if that's what you need. :)

I know you like your day job, but professor of arts should be something you consider.
I am not a fan of large gatherings, but am a pretty decent painter. I am looking forward to next time you offer a class, perhaps at a convention, that I can make somewhere and i will make an exception to attend.
If you ever offer one on one services through some type of zoom or skype type service I will be the first in line.
I apprecaite that, I can't wait to get back to teaching in person and I have thought about on-line classes at some point in the future. :)
