Always good to learn some new exercises. For the first time in my adult life (I'm 44), I have FINALLY been able to set up my drums in my own house. After years of apartment living where drums are never welcomed and having to drive to church to practice, I've finally been able to get in to a regular practice routine again. I've only played at church for the last decade and felt I hit a plateau. Feels great to get to the woodshed again. The woodshed that i OWN!
Hey, I’m 44 too! And yeah, having a set at home to practice on is key.. I have one at home and one at the band space… No way I can get better as needed with only on set… I saved for almost a year for my set at home…
@@mikeslessons I have 2 electronic drumkits that are brand new and the reason for that it is because I don't have space to set up my acoustic drumkits in my apartment where I live. I understand that electronic drums are not the same as acoustic drums but it can still help with skills and techniques.
I remember discovering Mike's "Intermediate drum fills" video back in like 2007. The sheer consistency and quality of this man's content over the past decade and a half is extremely precious and rare. One of the TH-cam drum gods right here.
You have one of the most perfect drum sound I've ever eared. I could just watch the videos for that, which I'm not, since I am also learning something new and inspiring each time.
Congratulations I know what it's like to play in apartments you have to I became electronic drummer but finally when I moved and I was able to have a garage to play my drums he's the greatest
Wow Mike! I was in drumline for four years and I played tenors and I always thought concepts like sweeps that we would do in drumline just weren't applicable or practical on the kit, but you've opened my eyes to the possibilities! Thank you!
Always a joy watching Mikes videos and this is no exception. Could we just paus for a sec though and appreciate that snare? It sounds.. well, perfect! Just completely perfect!
Mike appreciates your kind words, lol :) Seriously though, THANK YOU so much Robert. Thanks as well for the snare compliments. I had her cranked up for this lesson 🙏🍵🙏🍵
Besides the practicing and warming up the advice of being loose and being yourself is priceless 👌. It's taken me years to realize this but it has taken my playing to a new level. 🥁❤️
Great video, as usual. I’ve been living in EU for 6 months and away from my kit back in Australia. I find that your warm ups are great for pad work too, in that they just keep the drum muscles fresh. Definitely keeps things interesting 👍🏼
Lovely. Gonna be a big help in my practicing, thank you! I don't recall hearing 'please like and subscribe', but I'm just gonna go ahead and do 'em anyway 'cause this guy's got teacher in his soul ;)
Great lesson as usual! Thank you very much Mike!! I usually set up my floor tom lower than my snare because I tend to hit the rim of the FT instead of the head if I set them up for exact same height. But I think your concept of "same height same distance" makes sense. Do you have any tips to do it successfully?
Let's go! 🍵🍵🍵 Great warm ups as I continue to climb the Mozambique Mountain! Haven't made it to the top yet but chipping away as much as I can. Love when the TH-cam alert sounds off to a new video teach! Appreciate you and all you do for us! 👊🔥🥁
Excellent. Wonderful breakdowns and explanations, perfect camera angles, and great levity as always. AND, I was like #999…which is good luck, right? Maybe? Anyway, thanks for posting this most helpful quick-vid and all the best, Mike!
Great stuff… I’ve been working on finding good drummers on you tube, with good personality!! And yeah, my jaw moves to the right when I’m really going hard with focusing.. haha..
@@mikeslessons At first, even though you described it, I could not get the first one until I realized the kick drum was in there. Your kit is tuned so incredibly well that the bass drum sounded like a floor Tom and I was disconnecting what you had said, what I was seeing, and what I thought I was hearing. It just took me a couple run through. I ordered your signature cowbell about six months ago and am loving it. The magnets actually stay where I put them! 👍👍
I play at church I just play simple. But I wish I was good as you. I hv electric drumset at home but I haven't really messed with it. But I don't know if it's different from traditional drumset. Please let me know

these kind of cymbals sound so organic
Mike Johnston has been just as excited about drums for the last decade or more. And his skills aren't getting any worse! The attitude is contagious!

That's awesome! Happy to help :)
All around great lesson. Love how the warm-ups can “sub” for fills.
There are definitely some of my favorite fills/chops. Glad you enjoyed it Keith
The very first warm up is crazy! Keeping the kick consistent is always very difficult for me!

Finally, someone is bringing "Shooter McGavin style" into the mainstream. Your groove bell freakin rocks too. Thanks Mike!
LOL! I felt he was being overshadowed by Happy all these years
Solid exercises! I've got a two-week break between band rehearsals and now something new to work on.
Nice exercises; I’ve been playing 46 years but these will help sharpen up ongoing skills
There's always room for growth and new things that bring joy to you on the kit :)

As ever, perfect timing on this, Mike. I’m setting up my new kit *today!*

Great lesson, master!
As usual, that was an excellent lesson Mike. Very helpful & useful for warming up & playing well. Thanks!
I really dug these exercises; going to head to the kit and try these out.
I dig that drum tuning that kit sounds good

Feeeeeeling this one! 🕺🏼
What an incredible lesson... thanks so much! 🙏
You are so very welcome Renato. Glad that you liked it :)
@@mikeslessons Loved it! It's gonna help me a lot, I'm sure!
Super stoked on the sound of that far right crash symbol you always end on. Nice and dry but not too much. What model is that?
I call it Thunder Butter because it sounds like thunder but feels like butter. It's a Meinl 20" Extra Thin Hammered Crash :)
Are u playing the paradidledidle in triplet mode Mike?

Hi !
Great stuff!
What exact cymbals are you using here?
Great exercises, thank you, Mike! Just one question, do you have a video explaining how to play BD singles as fast as in exercise 1?
I actually have 7 courses on Bass Drum Speed on my site. Taking you from slow to pro :) - www.mikeslessons.com

It picks up the low end of the floor tom and the attack of the kick :)

I'm sure it depends, but do you have a general amount of time you like to do each of these exercises for a warmup?
Is there a pdf for download?
Was wondering the same thing. As a beginner I had trouble trying to figure out all the sticking.
PDF for these lessons? please...
👏👏👏👏👏

Even at 25% speed I still can't catch up to what he is doing. Anyone have notation for this?
I do :) Let’s tackle one at a time. Which one would you like to start with?
