    I feed my chickens brown rice and pinto beans every day. They also free range for bugs and greens. They are producing eggs like crazy, have shiny feathers and are happy, healthy and full! I cook 2 cups of long grain brown rice and 2 cups of dry pinto beans with water to the "full" line in my instant pot for 40 minutes with the pressure on. This feeds my flock of 40! It's been so effective that we started feeding the peafowl the same mixture. The egg production is up for them as well.

      That’s awesome! Do you cook this amount every day to feed that many birds? I’m still trying to figure out the right amount to make and how many days I have to make more.

    • @noplacelikehome9116
      @noplacelikehome9116 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep. I do this every day. It takes a while for such a large amount to cool down so I often cook up the next day's rations the night before and just let it cool on the counter overnight. Honestly, I wouldn't worry too much about spoilage if you make too much for that day. It will keep for a couple of days just fine.
      When I feed this many birds, I spread the mixture out in several places so everyone gets a equal chance to get what they need. I looked up info on chickens overeating and what I found said they won't overeat because they stop when their crop is full. Since mine get plenty of exercise it put my mind at ease.
      I may serve this slightly warm in the winter.
      Hope this helps ya. Really liking your channel and content!

      @@noplacelikehome9116 thanks for the info I really appreciate it. I have been making about the same amount using our pressure cooker as well and it seemed to feed my flock of 10 for about 4 days and that makes sense with you feeding 40 birds each day. I also tried fermenting the cooked rice and beans in water recently and they seemed to like that too.

    ziptie a ice cream scoop or large spoon to an old broom handle or stick. thats how i scoop up my hard to reach eggs. works pretty good.

    I couldn't agree more! Having the power of knowing what's in the food you or your chickens eat because what they eat is essentially what we are eating. I feed mine pinto beans, split peas, lentils , rice, oats, and soldier flys. I never thought of chickpea noodles , I will have to try that. Great video ❤

    What growing zone are you in? Thanks for this video, today is my first day that I'm cooking brown rice & can beans that expired but still good - going to the chickens! I'll be soaking and cooking dry beans in the instant pot next. We don't process dry beans too well in our family so the storage of dry beans are going to feed my new babies, now almost 11 weeks old, they don't seem to like even the non-gmo chick mash. They love vegetable scraps and greens from the garden.

    I am thinking about adding beans and rice to my chickens diet to lower my feed cost. I figure I can leave some commercial feed out as a supplement.

    • @onceuponatinyfarm
      @onceuponatinyfarm  ปีที่แล้ว

      I think thats what I am going to end up doing as well. Give them free choice of layer pellets in the feeder and supplement beans and rice every morning with black soldier fly larvae

    • @MA-mh1vs
      @MA-mh1vs ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@onceuponatinyfarm I think they will prefer the beans and rice but want them to have the option to get any thing they are deficient in from the layer feed. I am wanting to start a meal worm farm for both chicken feed and fertilizer for the garden. I have raised those before and the cost is practically nothing, they will thrive and multiply by the thousands on nothing but dry oats and potatoes.

    Great idea! how many times a day do you feed your birds?

    • @onceuponatinyfarm
      @onceuponatinyfarm  ปีที่แล้ว

      Usually just once in the morning and some black soldier fly larvae throughout the day depending on how much they beg for treats

    My chickens didn’t eat the cooked kidney beans nor did they want the canned pinto beans! What am I doing wrong? Would you recommend pinto beans, navy beans or something else? Also don’t you soak, drain the water and then boil them?

    • @onceuponatinyfarm
      @onceuponatinyfarm  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Try pressure cooking the beans mixed with brown rice in the instant pot. Pressure cook on high for 30 minutes. This makes the beans really mushy and I think they like it overcooked that way best. And yes I prefer pinto beans!

    Hiw many again? I feed my eleven hens just about anything food scrap wise, and they dint really go for the commercial feed. But the adults are hogging the sux chick's commercial feed that I put in the common area. Thoughts?

    • @onceuponatinyfarm
      @onceuponatinyfarm  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Keep upping the food scraps and add some rice and beans or pasta and beans, then supplement with black soldier fly larvae and they’ll never need commercial feed again
