As a retired UP road engineer with over 51 years in RR operations,I did not see any train going extra fast. Pretty much standard for the main line of a US class one railroad. Most of NS’s main line max speeds that I have seen are 60 MPH for freight and 79 MPH for passenger.

I have invited many into the cab of the engine when in a siding waiting for the train or trains we are meeting there. But those that stand at or into the ballast line when I’m going by at 50 to 60 MPH scare the hell out of me, because they could easily be very seriously injured or killed by something like a broken band dragging through the ballast.

Back in the early 1970's Union Pacific had a deal with CNW to hand-off 100-car coal trains for delivery north of Chicago. IIRC the hand-off was somewhere near Kansas CIty(maybe). The deal was "they dont stop - one crew gets off while next one gets on while rolling". I'd hop on at Clinton. Plenty of power up front, the return runs of 100 empty cars just flew westbound.

You put a lot of faith in the track maintainers, I never stand closer than 75 ft. or so, about the width of the longest cars sideways when derailed. lol.
We were recently in Texarkana Texas staying in our RV at a camp ground near rail tracks, long freight trains flew by about every 2 hours, single track carried trains in both directions never seen freight trains go so fast.
The mixed manifest was slow but good. It had a nice variety of freight. The geometry and gondola trains were both quite fast! Great catches, Greg! 😃😃😃❤❤❤

C'mon up to Toledo. The trains on the main lines leading in and out of the city get hustlin pretty darn good. Especially the tracks between Toledo and Detroit.

North of Virginia mn one night stopped at a tavern at a crossing of CN track to the Canadian border and by mn one, got out of the truck and a CN north bound train came along must a been 90 mph. Poor moose and deer eh?
I have had the pleasure of seeing NS going faster on the Saint Louis to Kansas City line (former Wabash). Once he gets to the out of Saint Louis City he speeds up to the point that he has to be going as fast as Amtrak.

I've seen lots of trains going that fast.some faster.living around tracks near Philly I see plenty,we had places to sit about ten foot above them, alongside,even a spot about 15 feet away in some tall grass.there was even a spot where the train would stop and go get something from the mobil gas station- mini mart.the conductors were always nice people and just told me ahead of time don't ask or just get on the train because he can't allow me to touch the train in any way.

I am an engineer for NS and I can tell you that system top speed for freight trains is 60mph and 79mph for passenger. That is on the slower side compared to out west with BNSF AND UP running intermodal at 70mph
Just a question: What if they detect one of the wheels is having a brake or bearing problem and is running hot. What is usually done? Surely one can't replace that part on the fly. If you could answer this query would be much appreciated. With thanks from Cochin, Southern India.
The faster trains in this video are only doing around 50mph/80kmh. Not slow, but a respectable speed. IM trains are allowed at 115kmh/72mph in my country (Australia), and other trains are generally 100kmh/62mph empty and 80kmh loaded, subject to track speed restrictions.
When they catch people putting graffiti on these trains, they should put them in a shop with sand paper, soap and water. Have them clean that mess off, then have them repaint them. Do that a few times, and it may cure them of the need to ruin other peoples work - plus, they could learn a trade to boot, putting money in their pockets, giving them purpose, and maybe they will feel better about themselves.

Many freight trains in Europe do 140 km/h regularly. There are tracks were they are allowed 160 km/h. That means 100 MPH.

Seen quite a few fast freights and , many pulling them truck trailers , and containers. Usualy along I-80 in Nebraska and Wyoming.
