Spike Lee on Birth of a Nation's horrific social effects, Jordan Peele, more (full) | BlackkKlansman

  • Spike Lee, world-renowned film director, sat down with BlackTree TV’s Jaleesa Lashay to discuss his upcoming film, BlacKkKlansman. Lee opened up about his personal experience with watching the cinematically innovative but socially problematic 1915 film, Birth of a Nation.
“This is personal for me,” Lee said. “I’m a graduate of NYU film school. The first year, my professor screened the film Birth of a Nation, and they taught us all of the cinematic innovations D.W. Griffith had come up with, but they left out everything that had to do with the social impact of the film. That this film re-energized the Klan. The Klan was dormant, it was dead, and it brought about a rebirth. Therefore, because of the rebirth of the Klan, it led to Black people being lynched, strung up, castrated and murdered, but that was never discussed!”
He added, “I have no problem with Birth of a Nation being screened, but let’s put it in context.”
Lashay went on to ask the celebrated filmmaker about BlacKkKlansman’s references to Gone With the Wind, another controversial film for its portrayal of African-Americans, which landed Hattie McDaniel the first Oscar for any Black actor.
Lee also discussed other filmmakers who inspire him today, saying Jordan Peele’s Get Out was exceptional, and he appreciated being able to work with the Oscar winner on BlacKkKlansman.

    Spoiler....
The scene of the KKK watching Birth of a Nation and way they reacted reminded me of the 2 minute hate from George Orwell's 1984 where the masses being subjected to violent footage and imagery causing the people to react in anger before cheering and rejoicing in the imagery of Big Brother.

This is what I take from the movie. As a white Irish guy I have heard of Birth of a Nation. I havent seen it, but prior to this movie if you asked me what is Birth of a Nation I probably would have scratched my head and said 'Oh, it's that American classic isn't it? One of the great movies?' I had no idea it was so racist it regenerated the Klan. Constantly as educate myself I discover the lengths whiteness can permeate our society and minds.

Get Out by Jordan Peele was an extremely stupid film. However, I do think Spike Lee is an exciting and dynamic film maker and I enjoy his films. However, what was his actual answer to the question she posited? Was his view that Birth of a Nation should be shown but that there should be a discussion about its wider social perspectives, not just a discussion about its film making techniques? I'm glad he recognised that Huckleberry Finn should be taught in schools. It may use the n word, but that is because of its historical context. At its core, it is about the realisation that a black man is a human being just like a white man.

I used to like Spike Lee and Spike Lee films, but when he came out against President Trump and in full support of the Party that invented the Klan, I lost all respect in the racism and hate that is in him. He apparently supports fully all the high-tech lynchings of the Democrat Party and ignores the fact that it was Democrat President Woodrow Wilson who showed Birth of A Nation in the White House and brought about the revival of the Klan. The Parties never switched and the Democrats are doing the same things today that they always did. Same hatred, violence, bigotry, and lies, but now high tech or in the name of justice.

How many KKK members today are democrat? Zero. They’re all republicans and die hard trump supporters.
Go read a history book and learn how believing in big government was considered a right wing conservative ideal for the first 150 years of US history. And believing in small govt was also considered liberal. Why? Because America was literally still being built. New states were being added. There was complete lawlessness out west because modern infrastructure hadn’t caught up to Midwest and western settlements. Roads and railroads and courthouses needed to be built. Taxes needed to pay for that. Rule of law needed to be strictly established. There was a very thin line separating lawful society and complete lawlessness. Proof: the civil war happened, the draft riots in NYC happened. Belief in big and small govt because entirely different concepts in the 20th century once american economics stopped developing laterally and started developing vertically
