    Use mufflers during camshaft break in. That way if something is going wrong and there's a noise, you can hear it before it causes damage. Then after break in, open the exhaust all you want!

    • @dalevackar182
      @dalevackar182 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      first start up should be with the valve covers off so you can make sure all the push rods are spinning. unless it's full roller

      @@dalevackar182 Well, yes but that much oil splashing all over the headers is a good way to start a fire. Do you REALLY think the car manufacturers do that to every engine built? They don't.

      @@davidkeeton6716 Never heard of oil deflectors on each rocker arm. Try it works well. If the lifters are not turning the cam lobe is sure to wear flat in a very short time on solid or hydraulic flat tappet engine.

    I built a 396 inch engine for my 98 Chevy truck with a Lunati 4 inch crank, AFR 265cc heads, 205/215 Crane cam, Crower 1.8 roller rockers, Chevy dual plane intake, Standard bore 396 pistons, Lunati rods, Dart block, Edelbrock Elite polished valve covers, 600 cfm vacuum 4 barrel. I have right at 10 grand in it with me building it. It is 422 cubic inches and cranks out 435 hp at 5000 rpm. The amazing part is at 70 mph I get right at 25 mpg seeing the engine is turn 2300 rpm.

      How the hell are you getting that millage? And what transmission setup are you using? The only thing I can see that would be helping fuel is the 600 vac carb, which is a bit small, but if you are only spinning it to 5K that's probably perfect for it.

    @ AusGamer38 427 small block is not a factory engine size. It is a stroker bored motor that is big horse power motor but it's not a factory motor. This is a factory engine he's talking about 396. The big-block engine sizes are 366, 396, 402, 427, 454, and 502. Small blocks: 265 283, 302 305 307 327 350 400. Of course when you start to bore and stroke these motors then it's a different story. I think your thinking of the small block 327 engine. A buddy bought a 396 last fall tore it down ran the numbers it turns out it's a 402 $800 bucks for a running motor was a good deal. He put the lunati cam in his as well loves it.

    • @gostrydr
      @gostrydr 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      a 427 small block isn't bored out. it's a 4.125 bore. That's stock 400 sb size. It's just a longer stroke crank in a 400 block.

    This 530/542 lift cam is a pretty mild cam for a 396 in a muscle car. Somewhere around 560 or more lift is better in most cases.

      ive never done it at 2500. never wiped a cam either. just use lots of zddp. this shit didnt become a problem until the fucking EPA bitched and whined until zddp was taken out of regular oil.

    • @davidkeeton6716
      @davidkeeton6716 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@frigglebiscuit7484 It's not that the EPA "did" this, it's that they required catalytic converters that are killed by the zinc in the oil that ends up in exhaust. The main problem with cams not lasting or being a problem to break in is the sorry state of manufacturing standards, from materials to actual machining to marking and boxing and shipping.

      @@RobinChevelle the only headers that come close to fitting properly are zoomies in a rail, and they probably need some hand fitting as well. All header manufacturers need a thrashing with a 9/16"x 3' coarse thread, threaded rod.
