Thom (to Jonny playing on synth) "That's fucking brilliant man, fucking brilliant!!!" (Later) Thom "we've actually been working all day...and the only thing we've got that's any good......is the bass and guitar."
i can see it, if it was just that first note but ringing in a wavey kind of tone it would’ve been perfect but he started playing chords right after. they went with the chords and they just scrapped the idea entirely is what i’m assuming they did
This is one of their greatest songs, i always thought maybe it was just too emotional for tom to keep working on. Plus every live version is sub-par. Part of the power of this song is how freaked out tom sounds and that crazy dirge sound they make that pushes the song forward. Every live version doesnt have that
I think what makes Thom's singing so amazing is how he delivers his lyrics in such an emotionally compelling way. When he is singing, you know to shut up and listen
This is really good, but imo the final version makes a lot more sense as a full track, and the string arrangement is glorious. That said, I REALLY miss the "What a nasty surprise" line, it was my favorite verse.
@@fantasmatice999 The OKNOTOK version is probably from 2015 or so, when they submitted it to the James Bond director. Thom's vocals and strings sound like modern Radiohead, but I also think they used some elements from the 90's recordings.
Really wanted this version. Still do. It’s vastly superior in terms of being less a bends era standard track, vs a talk show host/OKC era mind bending track.
Yeah. Just came back to this version. Used to listen to this and dream of what the full version would be like. The record version lacks the bite and tone of this project. Sometimes the muddier the better.
released version lack that saturation in thoms vocals and jonny's resonator. i think they wanted to put it in KID A/Amnesiac but they either forgot about it or didnt feel it like it fits there
I think the released version is fantastically done. I agree that this one has more punch and if they finished it, it could've topped the 2017 one, but I still think they did a fantastic job with it.
This is so much better than the released one. Clear case of band overthinking it, too much cooking in the kitchen, just needed to let this version rest and release
they were all in the mental gutter during ok computer so its understandable they overthought it here and released earlier version. that version from this video is probably saved somewhere
1:27 - this is what the released version of the song really needed, just some nasty atonal counterpoint guitar. It's such a motif of the 96-98 era of Radiohead that they didn't really return to.
this version is just fine by me... you know you're a bad ass band when your fans are obsessed with stuff you don't even consider worthy of release lol ...i'm so addicted to this song right now
Vincent Willems I would love it for sure, but its been what, 15 years? I think these old "bootlegs" are all we get to cherish. Follow Me Around is another one I'll love forever. :)
Fuck yes. When this came out ... I’d been waiting so long hoping they’d release it, but instead they released an earlier version from the Bends sessions.🤦♂️ it’s cleaner sure. But the instrumentation and performance on this beat it by a mile.
@@RustinChole it's not even from The Bends sessions, it's actually from 2015 when they were approached to do the Bond theme for Spectre. The remake was rejected since it was not an original song specifically for the film and then they did "Spectre", which was rejected... again. I don't even think they finished this version to be honest, it seems like they gave up entirely. I doubt they used any of the old tapes since the version on OKNOTOK sounds like it has AMSP production. I doubt we will ever get this song in its original form.
i'm pretty sure he says "the only thing we've got that's any good is the BASS and GUITAR" they worked all day in the studio and that's all they were able to get out of it that was worth releasing to them. I really would love to hear a finished version of this song. damnit.
They posted a thing on the website listing the songs being considered for the 9th album... and "Man O War," AKA BIG BOOTS, was one of them! I'm excited!
the journey this track has taken. to the dark days, RH had in the early 90's (The Bends) to only be rejected. then again during OK... to only be left out from the album. fast forward to 2015 pitched for James Bond (but it was ineligible) wasn't written for the film. 2017 it finally made it to re-issue of OK... this track is by far better than 90% of the music on billboards hits. one of the great mysteries of today.
I actually hate the official release of this song, after pining for it to happen for 15+ years. All the edge and animosity that is there in the early recordings/live versions is missing.
when i watched mpie and i saw this part i was like omg!!!!!this sound cool as hell im gonna listen to studio version after aND OF COURSE AFTER I SEARCH IT UP TO FIND THERE IS NOSTUDIo VERSION big boots. aka the #1 song riah is bitter about
This is Brilliant. But the only thing that Thom was happy with, was the bass and the guitar. Like he said "the only thing that is any good, is the bass and the guitars" ... maybe they should have just leave at that, and then release it.
2:21 LOL when i first heard this song i thought something was wrong with my player, then from seeing this i get that it is just something so cool only radiohead could experiment putting it in a song...i love this...is awesomeeeeeee :D
There was a remix, more finished sounding version of this video, made by a fan 4-5 years ago. I think it was called Acid mix, but I’m not sure. Does anyone know where I could find it ? It resembled the versions of Pawel Osmolski, like what he did with Follow me Around from MPIE too.
i love how ugly this version sounds. the original version is still ugly, in a nice bends sort of a way, during the loud sections, but i like how this keeps its griminess and nastiness up even in the quieter sections
The best unreleased song of all time.
N O T A N Y M O R E
IT'S HAPPENING!
Happened ;)
now its just a song.... a great fucking song!!!
And I love it!
Thom (to Jonny playing on synth) "That's fucking brilliant man, fucking brilliant!!!"
(Later) Thom "we've actually been working all day...and the only thing we've got that's any good......is the bass and guitar."
Xd
Hahahaha so true !!
i can see it, if it was just that first note but ringing in a wavey kind of tone it would’ve been perfect but he started playing chords right after. they went with the chords and they just scrapped the idea entirely is what i’m assuming they did
I'm a bit bummed out he doesn't say "what a nasty surprise " at all in the final version
This is one of their greatest songs, i always thought maybe it was just too emotional for tom to keep working on. Plus every live version is sub-par. Part of the power of this song is how freaked out tom sounds and that crazy dirge sound they make that pushes the song forward. Every live version doesnt have that
I agree 100%. Don't think this song works as a slower straight forward ballad
I think what makes Thom's singing so amazing is how he delivers his lyrics in such an emotionally compelling way. When he is singing, you know to shut up and listen
It may be just me, but I really appreciate this better than the "final" recording. This is the "Big Boots" I grew up with since 1999
This is really good, but imo the final version makes a lot more sense as a full track, and the string arrangement is glorious.
That said, I REALLY miss the "What a nasty surprise" line, it was my favorite verse.
This is a final recording. The version that was released on OKNOTOK is from The Bends era

This song is so good. I really wish they'd release some version of it. Those dissonant guitar chords in the second verse are so good.
Cross Your Fingures for LP10 when That Comes Out.
Cross your fingers for next month
Ha! I called it though :D
Ha, i guess now you wish they wouldn't have
@CameronB I’m guessing because it doesn’t have the chords they were talking about
This is so much better than the released one. Clear case of band overthinking it, too much cooking in the kitchen, just needed to let this version rest and release
they underthought it, actually
the version released on oknotok is from 1995
@@fantasmatice999 real and true
they were all in the mental gutter during ok computer so its understandable they overthought it here and released earlier version. that version from this video is probably saved somewhere
Anybody else here return to this when they had a rough day in the studio or elsewhere?
Hands down, the best unreleased Radiohead song. Even this rough "mix" just kicks arse.
1:27 - this is what the released version of the song really needed, just some nasty atonal counterpoint guitar. It's such a motif of the 96-98 era of Radiohead that they didn't really return to.
Hang on people, after 20 years we will finally hear a studio version !
June 23rd .
i love this version. just the way it is
this version is just fine by me... you know you're a bad ass band when your fans are obsessed with stuff you don't even consider worthy of release lol ...i'm so addicted to this song right now
nothing will top this version of this song. nothing.
I'd kill for a copy of this version of the song, unbelievable!!! Hope they release it one day
Don't get any big ideas, it's not gonna happen.
DoctorGonzo41 why not, they released big ideas after a decade aswell
Vincent Willems I would love it for sure, but its been what, 15 years? I think these old "bootlegs" are all we get to cherish. Follow Me Around is another one I'll love forever. :)
Will Fletcher you can rip an mp3 from youtube
+DoctorGonzo41 Hey, it was around 10-15 years till they actually released a studio version of Nude.
its fascinating to see how it developed and what they kept/didn't the track.
i can't believe we will get this version. i will definitely cry like a baby on my first listen, this has to be a dream
A song like this could create a whole fucking career for a musician.Thom is a perfectionist though :)
Anyone else kinda prefer this to the final version?

Yeah, i do!
Definitely ❤️
Of course. Love the synths.
i really like this version better than these more fleshed out versions here, amazing!

OKNOTOK 1997 2017
musicforthemasses not even close to this version though.
They posted a thing on the website listing the songs being considered for the 9th album... and "Man O War," AKA BIG BOOTS, was one of them! I'm excited!
really. I need a link to this. I have been listening to this song for way to long.

This is one of my faves from them. And oddly this version, is my very favorite. It's just cool and random.
The definitive version for me
this is my all time favorite youtube video
"We've been working all day and..." Oh silly Tom, you were so wrong.
+T1l3r G *Thom
+T1l3r G how was he wrong? they spent the whole day working on one track and they came up with nothing
this song is perfect as it is.
It's a shame that the OKNOTOK version doesn't have even half the anger and passion in this one. No nasty surprises.
I actually hate the official release of this song, after pining for it to happen for 15+ years. All the edge and animosity that is there in the early recordings/live versions is missing.
Man.....what I would give for the multi-track of that song.
You have done such service. Its hard to believe that radiohead are actual mortals
Remember this from the meeting people is easy documentary. Great!
Love this one.
Dare not speak it's name.
Time for another round of supernatural.
IT JUST NEEDS TO RESONATE A BIT MORE
My favorite unreleased Radiohead song ever will actually finally get released!!!!!
2007 TH-cam VIDEO THROWBACK
Love you like water always 2007, miss you dearly
1:28 makes this version soooo much better than the OKNOTOK version. I was so hyped to see it on the tracklist and ultimately totally Let Down.
best band in the world, at their peak.
JohnnyCagePro they peaked in 07
I'd listened to this so much, I was able to sing along to "man of war" on my first listening.
*IT'S COMING*
Wow, I hope this song doesn't get shelved forever. I love Big Boots. Has a similar feel to it as "The Trickster".
Chris Kortright today, all that changes! #OKNOTOK
people have already explained why today's important so I'll just post this passive-aggressive comment
when i watched mpie and i saw this part i was like omg!!!!!this sound cool as hell im gonna listen to studio version after

Do What I Do, Pray For it to be on LP10.
Still the best version of this
Reminds me of a bad dream. Ughhh so amazinggggg
Meeting People Is Easy version + Studio version = th-cam.com/video/mwHQIn29n-c/w-d-xo.html
James Bond doesn't deserve a song like this
really a shame that this isn't in the big ass leak that dropped today
leak only included demos from 1995 to 1997 i think. This was from 1998, i'm 100% sure cause of Thom's no surprises look
This is Brilliant. But the only thing that Thom was happy with, was the bass and the guitar. Like he said "the only thing that is any good, is the bass and the guitars" ... maybe they should have just leave at that, and then release it.
Wow, imagine if this was actually on OK Computer. That would be amazing. It would fit right in.
They'll probably never formally record it, sadly. But never say never...
0:58-1:50 is my favorite
I love how crazy they are about their music. I probably would've released it already. It sounds fucking awesome to my ears.
my fav unreleased radiohead song
2:21 LOL when i first heard this song i thought something was wrong with my player, then from seeing this i get that it is just something so cool only radiohead could experiment putting it in a song...i love this...is awesomeeeeeee :D
2:25 Jonny's hands leave the keyboard humbly. Thom: "Fuckin' brilliant!"
Absolutely love 🖤
This the deep radiohead !
radiohead still got it
came here after listening to the new released version.
nigel has the best job on the planet.
EYES AND CLOUDS AND PAWS IN THE WALL
Where was i while this was happening?
of course it was recorded...its in a vault somewhere waiting to be unleashed... I say petition to release it is in order :D
No, Thom! It's great! It's amazing! Record it!
...please?
@radiomikey94 its electric piano.. but i agree, its great
@thetruegents The same could be said about Electioneering but that fit right in.
Someone have to do a mix with this version and the one from oknotok
cant wait! :)
I wish I could throw away such good ideas !
This was to be a Bond song, now people think thats Cut a Hole...
fucking brilliant.
"fuck this" haha, oh Thom
Jesus is anyone else ready to burst out of their fucking skin for the release of this song on the 23rd? I am.
Not this version
Robidium no kidding I was so insanely disappointed after waiting 20 years for an old Bends era version. Worst “meh” EVER.🤦♂️😞
Robidium is in in the minidisc hack? I haven’t had 18 hours to go through that stuff yet.
fuck me. nigel has the best job ever.
Fuckin brilliant.
sounds like a reworked version of big boots
amazing....
2:12 a lisajous phase correlation meter :D
soon
I found it in MP3 yesterday if you still don't have it
I only ask they KEEP THE DRUMS and the rest of the percussion if they ever release this song.
yes
What about this couldn't they get right? I don't understand, it sounds awesome.
Haha, maybe they'll finally release "The Best Driving Music Ever".
I hope they'll release it in 2020 included in Kid A nniversary Edition
2:50 my favourite part ^^
Fuck, this version is so much better than the oknotok version...
put your hands where i can see them!

i love how ugly this version sounds. the original version is still ugly, in a nice bends sort of a way, during the loud sections, but i like how this keeps its griminess and nastiness up even in the quieter sections
1:42 was really cool, though.
2:30 fucking brilliant
Spectre!!!
Damn it, Thom! Have Phil drop some beats and the bass and guitar is all you need!!
>.< dammit thom! you should have put this song on OK Computer!!!
