- In this video, I show you how to turn sugar into rocket fuel and use it in your model rocket.
By combining potassium nitrate and sugar, a fuel can be made that burns quickly and can be used in making rockets.
for the nose cone and fins I have used a 3D printer , which you can make and use with your own creativity.

If you cook the sugar and potassium on low heat, it becomes a brown paste. This is a more effective fuel.

60 years ago me and a friend used to biid this kind of rocket, using a knitting needle removed to get internal burning surface instead of a drilling device... It was really fun !

Used to make these as a kid but used different oxidizers and fuels, mostly stuff my friends parents brought back from Aerojet General where it seemed everyone worked in the 60's and 70's.

I worked at Aerojet, Sacramento for 30 years in A-Zone R&D test lab. It was a blast. Pun intended.

Used to build rockets using paper mache body baked in the oven. For fuel used salt peter, icing sugar,sulfur and charcoal. Got the recipe out of Popular Mechanics. Sealed the top with wax and nose cone.

Funny. When I was a kid, about 15, a fireworks book said get the potassium nitrate from your pharmacy. I walked over and did, and the first thing the guy did was call my parents. They said ‘no problem.’ Of course I used to buy .22 ammo at the hardware store next door., and my dad later bought me a .45 Gold Cup National Match before I was 18, and I shot in matches, showing up alone, where half the guys were cops. Nobody ever said a word. Try that today. Different time, eh?

What if you adjust the cement ratio could that help the trajectory.What about adding a stabilizing fin up top that can add drag but grately improve stability.May help them be more predictable against the different variables.

When i make rocket i use bentonite clay or cat litter for nozzles. You might have better performance and less blowouts. I just put in ground up litter ram with a hammer till slight bulge.

If the prepared fuse is wrapped in thin paper, it should burn faster. The enclosed fuse retains more heat forcing it to burn faster. With some trial and error, a desired fuse length can be dialed in. Crushed match heads can also be used. By adding sulfur to the mixture and trading crushed charcoal for the sugar, a form of black powder can be attained.

Gee, I'm no expert in pyrotechnics, but using a rapidly rotating hot drill in contact with rocket fuel looks dangerous. Maybe try cold forming that rocket nozzle? I knew just such a method.
Saw you compressing the rocket fuel / powder with a hammer. Is the powder stable enough to not ignite if smashed between a hammer and a rock?

The chemical reaction needs to be fast and generate sufficient volume of gas held under compression to explode. Sometimes if massive quantity ignites like ammonium nitrate in Beirut 2000plus tonnes of it will generate sufficient RAPID volume of gas that it is an explosion . Doesn't need any additional compression
I suspect sucrose wouldn't oxidise as quick as sulphur charcoal mixture.lending to be more suitable for rotor motor than an explosive bomb. I wouldn't be hitting this mixture with a hammer all the same!
By the way Urea isn't ammonium nitrate. Not interchangeable for detonation purposes. Both are nice fertilisers. Urea is CO(NH2)2. Whilst Amm nitrate is NH4NO3

Not at all. Freely available as nitrate fertiliser from horticultural suppliers. KNO³. I have a 25 kg bag, plus it is easy to buy as a laboratory reagent (much dearer than the agricultural grade product which works just fine anyway!). If it's too difficult, in the USA at least ,a stump removal product, which is just potassium nitrate, is available in many stores.

Nitrate decompose to release oxygen and oxygen increase burning speed of sugar.
It doesn't explode because this combination is a kind of deflagration rather than explosion.
It also explode when you increase ratio of potassium nitrate from 65% to higher levels. Also if the nozzle is too small then chamber pressure will increase to a level where it can explode.
If we change the fuel from sugar to charcoal it will also explode because old gun powder was made of charcoal and potassium nitrate with a little bit of sulphur. In normal conditions sugar doesn't burn but charcoal burn. So fuel is another factor
Modren missiles use aluminum as a fuel in powdered form. And you know aluminum is a meltal which doesn't burn except in special condition when oxidizer is present.
Getting potassium nitrate is the most difficult thing in this experiment because if you buy online you will be monitored by government and agencies.

Looking at the fuel and oxidizer, it looks similar to black gunpowder. In black gunpowder, charcoal powder serves as fuel.
Nope it's sulfur that serves as the fuel. Potassium Nitrate provides Oxygen and charcoal controls the speed of the burning rate.
