    Netflix has a great documentary on ZZ Top.
    They tell a story about how Billy couldn't get those gravelly vocals during a recording session, so he took his shirt off, smoked a couple heaters and ran around the block in the cold until he found that sound.

    Some great playing by Billy Gibbons as always. I love his tone. Old ZZ Top is the best of Texas Blues Still hoping y'all get to 'Like A Hurricane' - (You Florida Boys Have To Play This) It mixes beauty and fury in equal parts. It 100% banger. 'Cortez The Killer' - contains one of his most influential guitar solos ever. The song is submerged in an ocean of distortion from the start with Young employing one of his preferred tunings, the double drop D tuning or DADGBD (I know musicians like yourself will understand what I'm talking about). It's so good it makes me cry. Those melodies are so emotional, so calculated, constructed note to note on both songs. They are long but you won't care. Give old Neil a chance.

    The best ZZ songs are album cuts, not singles: “Hot, Blue, and Righteous”, “Sheik”, “Master of Sparks”, “Just Got Paid”, “Mexican Blackbird”, “Manic Mechanic”. Seriously good stuff.

    When I was in high school, there was an ice cream shop by the school. They had a juke box and songs like La Grange were on it. This was early to mid 70's.

    Back in the days of 8 Track a buddy and I were lifting weights in an old garage. This kid pulls up in a big jacked up 4x4 pickup with Tush blazing. First thing out of my mouth was "Who..is..that..band?" "ZZ Top Tush, man.' I went out and bought it the next day.

    I think the point always is...how well does the song achieve what it set out to do, and was it a worthwhile pursuit? Tush nails it all the way around. Urgent, driving beat; great and well recorded vocal; genre-defining guitar riff; Superb no/nonsense ending.

      Part of the reason may be because he mispronounces “tush.” It’s from Yiddish, from tuches. The vowel is a short oo, like in “good.”

    • @DocEonChannel
      @DocEonChannel 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Once I realized what the word actually was, I always thought the mispronouncing was to make it rhyme with "much". There's not a whole lot that rhymes with the standard pronounciation of "tush".

    I love me some zz top. I raised my kids on this type of music. You guys have got to check out "Tube Snake Boogie" When my youngest was 2 years old he would run into the room yelling "Dee Dee mommy Dee Dee. Tude Nake Boody" He always got what he wanted. I would put on one of my many ZZ top cd's and we would rock out. Love the reaction and also for imitating my grandmother. She was a southern lady who loved to sit in the swing and drink. Her and I spent many a drunk hour laughing and singing. Lots of love and stay safe.

    No, no, no. A ZZ Top banger is "Heard it on the X". I would consider "Tush" a good song that gets a lot of airplay but kind of hollow. It definitely said all it needed to say in those 2 minutes.

    There are too many to name. You have so so many ZZ Top songs to hear. You have only just begun to scratch the surface. You will find rockers like Legs, Sharp Dressed Man, Gimme All Your Lovin, Cheap Sunglasses, Pearl Necklace, Got Me Under Pressure, Beer Drinkers and Hell Raisers or Tube Snake Boogie, just to name a few. But you will also find gritty slow blues grooves like Blue Jean Blues, Fool for Your Stockings, My Head's in Mississippi, Mexican Blackbird or I'm Bad, I'm Nationwide. At the pace you are going you will never get to them all. I think you will soon realize their ratio of duds to gems over their large body of work rivals even the greatest bands of all time. I recommend at least one a month for the next year just to get some of it into your playlist. Nothing heals the soul like the blues.

    This song was written by Billy Gibbons during a sound check in Florence, Alabama. Fame Recording Studio is across the bridge where all the 1960 - 1970's hits were recorded. It was the hit recording capital of the world. I ran into Mick Jagger when he was recording the Brown Sugar album. Nobody bothered any of those artist. We just didn't pay any attention to them.
