Kali alters have a sort of point system where enemies do more points than others and its not really worth it to sacrifice those basic enemies.

very vague spoiler:
youre on the right path. there are... certain items you need yet, and there is a way to circumnavigate that lava trap, its no troll. perhaps look to see if you can remotely move the idol, while securing a safe spot where the explosions that release the lava dont quite reach. the true end is long, confusing, and quite a trial. you have one piece, i know you can do it!
