You inspire me so much. I'm an international person and because of you diaries I was able to get to know Yale's program and I saw that they have a combination with my major (sociology and African American). I'm going go apply this year. Thank you for you content

Hi, watching your dissertation process helped me a lot. I am in the last year of my PhD and I feel lost because sometimes I think I don't make the right decisions.
Thank you for sharing your process with us.
P.S. I hope I have written correctly because my native language is Spanish.

Yes! So in my Brit Lit survey this spring we covered Restoration and Eighteenth-Century literature. Behn, Phyllis Wheatley, and Equiano do some really interesting things when it comes to recording experiences and narratives about slavery in a literary sense. As a non history major, these accounts helped me gain some insight into individual, social, and perceived experiences of slavery.

Yes! They are all very well known sources. I unfortunately need pieces that are a bit earlier, which are slim at best 😅

I am so glad you found Black England helpful! I also found it really helpful in my own work. Great video, I really appreciate you showing us all the different sides and emotions of undertaking a PHD.

There’s also a novel version of Oroonoko from 1688. The Woman of Colour (1808) by an anonymous writer might also be of interest! Its outside of your period but its a really interesting book if you haven’t read it yet!

@@KaelynGraceApple It’s actually only a novel! The Woman of Colour is great. I know you love Jane Austen, and it pairs really well with Austen’s work. I’m also currently working on an article on The Woman of Colour!

When I was in my last semester of library school, I had a dream where I never finished high school and since I didn't finish college, I couldn't finish my master's and would never be a librarian. It was awful. The worst is that I still occasionally have that dream even though it's been 11 years since I graduated.

❤❤thank you so much for sharing ❤ ❤ I feel lost too, just coming into 2nd year PHD and have been so stressed this past week after reading comments on a draft from my supervisor. It's so hard to not take them personally. I've been hiding in the library everyday, and your videos have been so inspiring! My plan today was to type up notes and key words from a reading I finished yesterday, but after a big cry at breakfast I feel tired now 😅 ....sitting in the library now and not doing much work but seeing your video has been incredibly comforting, helpful, and inspiring. Thank you and good luck with your research!

Hi 😊 I hope you are doing okay! Just sharing that seeing your video made me feel better. I'm currently doing my masters in hospitality and tourism, and the past few weeks I feel so stuck and so guilty bc of that.
Your video was a reminder that it's okay and that it will be okay. Tks 💜

What you said at 04:55, I needed to hear that today. Thanks, Kaelyn, for sharing a part of your journey. Also, I am very tempted to listen to the audiobook of Black England, just because of the cover. Do you have favorite books on history (fiction/non-fiction)?

I'm an English undergraduate and Aphra Behn's 'Oroonoko' would be an excellent source! Although it has been staged many times, its original iteration as one of the first prose travel narratives fuses elements of fiction, biography, and history. The character Imoinda is an excellent exemplar of the vexed position of African women in the late seventeenth century and would no doubt help your research.

Just a tip with the matcha, to avoid clumps, sift it first with a mini strainer and it makes the matcha smooth! Love your videos!🫶

I have been meaning to ask a question that is related to your research. In what ways do you think background to be mattering in your position in this research, especially in terms of Donna Haraway's situated knowledges? Or Sandra Harding? Because when writing about a certain type of oppression part of which I am not, I tend to get imposter syndromey... "Am I the one to talk about this?" It would be awesome if you mentioned this in an upcoming video if you have not yet.

hi, im a prospective history undergraduate student. my particular area of interest is cultural history of early european history. Since youre researching the early modern period, im curious if you come across documents written in latin, and how you navigate through that if you do. also, how do you deal with reading manuscripts with handwriting that is difficult to read? thanks so much, your channel is such an inspiration :)

    • @KaelynGraceApple
      @KaelynGraceApple  ปีที่แล้ว

I study the late early modern period (1565-1704) so I haven't come across much latin but still struggle with paleography. I use reference books as a guide
