    You can stick a Borescope thru the sparkplug hole and look at the valve and piston for damage. If the piston hits the valve even slightly there will be a mark on the piston .

    To be safe Kenny, put the piston near the top to prevent the valve from dropping in cylinder.

    Im old school I remember 45 years a go I had a couple of broken valve springs , I would take a Q-tip with some valve grinding compound and go through the spark plug and put some on the valve seat , then take a drill and turn the valve left and right to reseat it , this was done on a fairly new 78 ford 400 , and a 350 GM motor . have fun Kenny .

    I have found the best method is to turn the engine over until the piston of the cylinder you are working on up to its almost at TDC then even if you do lose both valve collets the valve can only drop so far into the cylinder. I have also used air pressure method to change the valve stem seals on my Jaguar straight six. Good diagnosis and I think you are right there is probably carbon on the valve preventing it from sealing, good call just to replace the spring.

  • @northpoint1039

    Hi Kenny, :)
    How I learned to keep the valve from dropping into the cylinder when replacing valve springs is to take the sparkplug out and then stuff rope inside the cylinder. It keeps the valve in place when removing the broken spring and the keepers.

    • @dennissmith8199
      @dennissmith8199 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yep, the old rope trick. I used that trick on my airplane engine once when it had a bad valve rotator.

    I’ve got a 2020 transit connect van. It’s had two recalls, it’s got 15000 miles on it, it had mice in the blower housing brand new, it had an a/c issue, the automatic door lock for the drivers side sliding door still doesn’t work, I cleaned the mice nest out and found out there must be some duct work missing because there was a 6”x6” hole where mice could just walk into the blower housing, and also had a check engine light related to the cam shaft sensor that had to be fixed. I told my dog, I don’t know which is worse, being unamerican or driving a van that always breaks down. Used to have a little Nissan pickup and drove it over 50000 miles and only had to put a battery in it. Who knows maybe just bad luck

      Sounds rough. I feel bad driving imports some times, and if American cars were more reliable I would get one.
      Both my sisters had jeeps. Both had engine and drivetrain issues. They both drive Toyotas now.
      My neighbor has two Chrysler 300’s. One broke down a year or two ago and his new one he got a couple months ago has been on jack stands all week. He dailys his 86 Subaru.
      My buddy had a dodge truck that I helped put a new engine in. His family is a ford family though. His dad had several diesel ford trucks, other ford suvs including an excursion with a v10. Also a fox body Mustang for fun. Anyway, Last year after rebuilding the engine in his truck for the 3rd time (he’s a retired engineer that worked on jet engines, and can fix anything.) he gave up on his fords and got some kind of dodge hybrid truck to tow his toy hauler around. So far it’s holding up.

    OK Kenny, You've peaked my interest. I own a 2017 GMC Sierra 1500 4.3 Liter V6 EcoTec3 LV3 Engine (4.3 Liter Engine, Vin code H). My 2017 gets over 30mpg driving over and back to a house I own. Both ways eliminates the uphill downhill or wind affect. That is amazing. But I only drive 60mph and I am very aware of my driving characteristics, I drove for Fuel Economy at GM for 36yrs. Interesting: The 4.3 reduces to 2.9 liters in V4, where the 5.3 = 2.7, so the 4.3 actual size is bigger in V4 mode than the 5.3, which might account for the bigger more noticeable engine shake in AFM mode. And Ken; you were going to find out which cylinders shut off on that 4.3, Please Tell. Last: If the valve ever contacted the piston, even if it was only a kiss, I'd replace it no matter what. It's kind of like the Fram commercial, pay for the repair the right way now or pay a lot more when it destroys the piston, cam, block, head etc. Can't wait for the next vid. ben/ michigan

    Spare keepers stored in the sump ? --- Back in the 1984 UK factory garage our mechanic took an oil pump apart and found it was keeper wedged inside the pump, further investigation he found 2 more spare, they had been banging on the mesh pump strainer intake and made a hole.
    He dropped the sump and cleaned it out.
    Later he took the rocker cover off expecting to find where they had come from ? none missing ? the van was fixed and ran well.

    Will be interesting to see if this works out without pulling the heads. I would say just do a valve job, have the heads reworked, but that motor may have too much wear. I'll keep my fingers crossed and hope changing that spring works. Also hope that is the only one. I had one before that had a broken rocker arm. I changed it and it worked out, blind luck.

    No biggie with dropping the keeper.
    Every great mechanic has an occasional moment.
    You were on auto pilot when you were tapping the valve because normally the spring wouldn’t be broken and you would only have had a lock/key loose if you had the spring compressor on the keeper under tension.
    So I say - don’t sweat it. Ya didn’t break anything and you’re going to fix it anyway when you get the parts.
    Keep all the great content coming. It makes me feel like I’m still in a shop. Which I haven’t been in years…

    Ken, why didn't you raise the piston to TDC to prevent the valve from dropping into the cylinder if a oops happened? It's easy enough to lock the crank in place to prevent it from rolling when air is applied.

    You wouldn't think it would with modern engines killing the injector fairly quick when detecting misfires, but very often on the GN V6 and V8 it will burn a hole in the intake manifold plenum when the intake valve spring breaks. Of course, that's even more possible with this one since it has no misfire DTC's. A smoke test would be good if you wanted to let your customer know sooner rather than later.

  • @campermike8879
    @campermike8879 ปีที่แล้ว

    From my experience with the GM moving trucks at work that 4.3 actually runs better than the V8's. Doesn't have the horrible rough idle and actually feels more peppy.
