    This week started off with a cold wet snow on Monday. That's not great for new calves to be out in. We had a couple of calves that were two days old end up with pneumonia and despite being treated with antibiotics as soon as we noticed it they didn't survive.
    Glen has spent the rest of the week trying to get the extra twins going on the cows that have lost their calves. The cows are not too excited about this development but the calves will likely wear them down and they will resign to their new child. If you are reading this and while watching the video during the water run off portion Glen mentions the name of a place where he lived with his parents until he was three. Put the first name he said in the comments and we will see what happens. There is a time limit for this to happen, let's say April 15, 2023.
    Thanks so much for watching and take care,
    Annette

    Those calves are such cuties. I never knew what grafting was. Now I know! It is amazing all the water you have. We're waiting for full melt so we can see how much water we'll have around. Have a great week!

      Hi Rich! The runoff here is so neat, we look forward to it and miss it when it doesn’t happen.
      Most of the water has already absorbed in the field, which is okay because it is a bit of a worry with the calves.
      It will be interesting to see what all your snow does when it melts.
      Take care.

    The baby brown cow so cute. I can hear the wind and it seems like getting warmer to your place. Cow will enjoy the water except for the baby cow, it could be slippery for them. Glen did a nice capture between the blue sky, brown grass and water everywhere. Thank you Annette for sharing.

    Whoa…sounds like a lot of calving issues (normal I’m sure but wow!). Grafting is the coolest thing when it works well, The run off looks divine! And the dug out looks great. Awesome story about the homestead.

      Thanks Lisa! The cow we are trying to get R320 onto is still gently kicking at him.
      Glen watched one night for about 20 minutes and they went around in circles until the calf finally wore her down and she just let him suck. 😂
      He should smell like her now having been on her for about a week.
      There are a few more that Glen is keeping close to monitor. Big guy and c-sec mom are doing okay. Glen gives him a bottle morning and night in case he needs more.
      Homestead story was so cool. Dynamite sounds like a lot of fun...😜
      Take care friend,

    I bet the grass really grows in all those low lying areas that the water sits and has some time to soak in.
    Our place gets underwater when it rains alot and the creek gets out of banks, but man does the grass grow in the bottom lands. Great video!

    Is that the big red cow from a few weeks ago? So sad that she lost her calf. Glad to see the beautiful twin baby take to her!
    Great Resource Management. Not only is the water collecting in the dugouts, it's also seeping into the ground to replenish the water table. So important to let the land do this. In California we've overdeveloped and the land can't absorb enough water to replenish. Saltwater intrusion has ruined many wells, and the Central Valley has sunk over 9 meters in places and continues to sink. Some of the aquafers will never recover.
    Spring flowers can't be too far off, then it will be time to plant the garden!

    • @TheCowEmporium
      @TheCowEmporium  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Kathy!
      This red cow just calved last weekend, pneumonia can be hard to treat in these young calves as they go downhill in health so quickly.
      California really is struggling with their water. Not having water is so scary.
      We have a snowfall warning today and into tomorrow, so crazy! I can't wait to get out into the garden, for now I will have to be happy with the plants I have going already. I know I have way too many tomatoes started and I tried so hard to cut back on tomatoes this year.. LOL
      Please take care Kathy, I hope you are feeling better soon.
      Annette

    • @kathcares
      @kathcares ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheCowEmporium Thanks, Anette! Coffee is working its magic. You should make Maplecook's 4 hour roasted tomatoes when your crop is in! I still have to build a fence around my garden to keep the critters out. We're overrun this year. The wet winter has been very good for the ground squirrels and rats; we have a bumper crop! I'll be watching and cheering you on as you get your garden going.😁🌱🍅🥔🧄🧅🫑🥕💚

    Boomers! I believe that was the name, without going back to re-watch. Fantastic video. Does the dugout serve solely as a retention pond, or does it also serve as a watering hole and/or irrigation pond?
