How to make a barrel pond

  • Not everyone has room for a pond but even in the smallest space you can have a pond in a barrel. This video shows you how to construct a small barrel pond for the patio. It contains plants for wildlife and a small fountain to give you that relaxing sound of running water.
    We have used a plastic barrel with a basket containing 2 marginal plants, which we have raised up so the surface of the basket lies just below the water level. We have used a couple of empty aquatic baskets to raise the plants but you could use a couple of bricks, just make sure they are brushed with a wire brush to remove any loose surface material which could potentially pollute the water. We have also used a dwarf water lily; this will shade the water to prevent a bloom of algae growing and suffocating any pond life. This can be placed straight onto the bottom of the barrel, the leaves will grow to the surface. A couple of bunches of oxygenators have also been included to keep the water clear for any wildlife. The finishing touch is a small telescopic fountain, the one we have used pumps 450 ltrs of water an hour so is ideal for a small patio pool.
    Make sure that any wildlife which comes into the pool can escape; we have used some large pebbles as steps from the marginal plants basket to the surface. Placing the steps behind the plants ensures that the wildlife can escape un-noticed by predators. You could also use a rough piece of stick; make sure any timber you use has not been treated with any preservative as some treatments can contain arsenic which would poison any aquatic wildlife.

    Thank you for your wonderful ideas! I hadn't thought about a barrel water pond, but it is perfect for me. I live in an apt. And have a nice large patio and it would look awesome and I would like to put plants and fish in it also. Found my next project!

    Love this idea! Is ur barrel made out of plastic??? Do you have to use a pump for the fish and how much did this cost?

    • @TheMaxadams
      @TheMaxadams 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      No you dont because all the fish waste and un eaten food will be composted for the plants to absorb nutrients from and the plants will then give oxygen.

    seems like those plants take up a lot of space in such a small pond.
    If fish you need water dechlorinator and filter.

      You have to put gravel on top of the soil to keep it in place

    I’ve done this, but I keep having problems with algae growth. How do you solve the issue with algae growth in a small patio barrel pond?

      Add more oxygenating plants. Give them a few weeks to get established; use rainwater to top up barrel if you can ; add some floating plants for extra surface cover; consider if the water is getting too much direct sunlight for too long, and consider introducing some shade for a few hours. And if you have fish, the waste they produce doesn't help. A small fountain might be useful too. No need for a mains powered one if there's enough sunlight :) Hope this helps-I am no expert btw :) Just suggestions :)

      Three years too late with this one but I was just wondering myself and discovered the answer just before watching this video so hey, better late than never haha. They get passively warmed by the sun. In fact, the reason why you want a plant like a lily or duck weed is to provide shade so the water doesn't heat up too quick, which isn't desirable since you need to constantly worry about the water level and if you plan on keeping fish the drastic temperature fluctuations make for a poor environment. From my research, I've found that you want to keep between 60-70% of the surface area for a patio pond like this one covered with some sort of floating plant in order for stable conditions to be maintained. For the winter you'd need to winterize it, meaning you'll need to drain it and store any fish or plants indoors (that is depending on how rough your winters are). Thank you for attending my ted talk.

    Great BUT dont really want a trailing cable to a water pump! Rather detracts from the overall look of the pond!

    mmm not a good way it lack a natural filter ....
    It's very simple to made , with simple water Pump with flexible pipe & a balcony contener , this latter filled with Pozzolana at bottom , cotton wadding & finally gravel , it's possile to also plant an additional hanging plant towards the pond to partly hide it.
    You have to connect the pipe to the pump, which you raise in your balcony planter placed astride the edge of the barrel and saving filter and 5 cm from the top of this one, you make 4 holes with the drill so that the water falls back into the basin, the first advantage is filtering at low cost better than with filters to buy, because the advantage of pozzolana is that it does not get dirty and it does not have to be changed on the contrary and the other is the slight noise of a waterfall as the water falls into the barrel.

      You don't need a filter with oxygenator plants
