Loved how straightforward and informative this was. I was surprised when the video ended after all that needed to be said was said, rather than anyone rambling on for 15-30 minutes to get the same stuff across.
Wow videos like this are harder to find on YT these days. Straight to the point, informative, brief. No super long intro with product placement or preambles etc. Much appreciated!!
Exactly what I was thinking! Plus, that part where he said Rich was wrong and dramatically paused, it made me LOL for real and I must have watched that bit 10 times over! Every other video I watched I couldn't remember shit lol This was memorable!
Excellent video mate - thanks! I've learned more in 5 minutes than all the hours on and off in bits of other videos. And the A vs B set up on the left and right - awesome!
Lot of mis-information ehre. I'm searching around to find where the misconceptions of dynamics vs condencers when it comes to ambience and sound rejection comes from. This is an example of that. You may have learned this somewhere else - I'd be interested to know where. But suffice to say, sound rejection (in this case demonstrated with polar pattern) and ambient sound (which can be referred to as a form of signal-to-noise ratio) is no different between a condenser and a dynamic.
Top search result for "dynamic microphone for streaming"; straight to the point but with enough information and demonstrations to tell me exactly what I needed to know. Great video!
The proximity effect happens for dynamic and condenser microphones due to their polar patterns, not do to their microphone type. I agree with your other points and always recommend dynamic microphones for streaming/gaming/podcasting.
Just a quick advice from me who's a broadcast engineer who works in radio and tv station to anyone who wants to buy a mic for streaming or making music and songs, get a dynamic microphone rather than condenser specially if you have an open space with lots of noises going on and specially if your PC is next to your mic I get amazed when people recommend condenser mics for streamers. you use condenser mics if you're doing a podcasting with just one mic available, like put it in the middle of the table for example and chat with the person in front of you, and it must be a closed area with no outside noises, no AC noises, no fan noises, not even a pc with watercooling noises.. and if you get close to it and talk like you do with dynamic mics you will hear your breath even if you put filters on it .. and when you want to remove it by using EQs you will cut some of frequencies and lose so many sound that you might need, the quality will be horrible .. for streaming, making music, podcasting alone use dynamic for sure, dynamic has better quality and doesn't catch any background noises such as fans, ACs, birds, even if people chatting in the background but with condenser mic you will catch every single sound most of the streamer i see them buying condenser mics and then use EQ to turn it into dynamic.. just why?! lol
Both podmic and at2020 has the cardioid polar pattern, but as you notice in the video the AT2020 is having less of noise rejection even though the AT2020 has a tighter pattern than the podmic.
Great video mate - but to ad on, I think if you are a home musician a dynamic mic could be the better choice too, because it picks up less reverb and room noise. Like the Se V7 is imo in the 100 money range a great sounding mic and can get you some pretty good and clean vocals in a horrible room
Thank you. I am completely new to this technology. This has to be the best video I have seen about this subject. My work has altered and I find myself getting more and more audio commissions for stories. I need to find something that will suit my needs. Currently using a condensor and i am at home. My audio files keep getting rejected to do over because of some noise interference on the file. I do not have a home studio. Yep...looks like I am gonna have to invest in a dynamic microphone. You have answered my dilemma clearly.
I bought a Rode NT-Mini condenser microphone for Zoom meetings and stuff. I'm always annoyed that other participants could hear echoes and other unnecessary noises. I tried listening to it myself and could hear my aircon buzzing. As my room wasn't as "treated" as it could be, my audio was just way too bad. A mic from an Apple earphone was better as it would transmit less noise. If I knew this earlier I would have bought a dynamic mic instead.
This was very informative. I think ill be picking up that Rode soon. Im currently rocking the AT 2020 and i absolutely love it but im having audio issues with my room environment when i stream. Thanks for showing it in a way someone like me can make a better decision on what my next mic will be.
Thank you for coming straight to the point. This was the 8th or 9th video I have seen today and there was too much bla bla. This was what I was looking for.
a like for the awesomeness content. i came across your video after i pulled the trigger for a condenser mic for streaming. oh well. its still ok cause i intent to do voice overs as well moving forward. keep it up ken. love from malaysia
Sir, I am beginner. I want to record my written poetry professionally. In which my line will go in high tone and will also come in low tone. Tell me such a mic and audio interface. So that I can record and mix later. My room is not sound proof. My total budget is $300. But a shopkeeper told me that you cannot do recording with dynamic mic. Please tell me what should I do. Tell me such a mic and audio interface that I will not regret after buying.
Buy a Rode PodMic and a Scarlett usb interface. Then spend the remaining money to buying yourself a nice dinner to eat while laughing at the bad advice the shopkeeper gave you.
@@KenTheContentCoachYT Thanks bro 🙏, If I take the interface of Audient with Sure Beta 58. So this setup will be good. I can do recording on this setup. i will get good quality
Also thing worth pointing out here: Dynamics will reject (to a degree) clicking noise from mouse and keyboard, but a condenser will pick them up pretty clearly. As well as barking dogs outside... and toilet flushing in neighbours apartment.
Appreciate the straightforward information! I am a streamer with a Condenser mic and noticed when I yell it is LOUD. Like, unpleasant. Will the dynamic mic have an elevated volume but not the "High Pitch" of the yell / scream? Thanks Ken
Any microphone will be loud if you yell. What you need to do is to set a limiter in your software at around -6 to -10 dB for your microphone (Your game/other content should be slightly lower than this). So if you yell it might sound ass but the volume will be limited for the viewers so they don't get their ears dismantled. You could also add a compressor filter.
I have an issue i cant find an answer to. I also use a rhode pod mic, i usually run it through my loopstation as a audio interface, but it gives crackling audio going in and out of the interface. Ive tried switching to new cables and that didnt help. I then swapped to a mixer i have and that didnt help either. They work perfectly fine when not giving and taking audio from the pc.
After using blue yeti condenser microphone for 4 years. I will be using from tomorrow Samson Q9U which hopefully will be better for voice and avoiding background sounds.
Awesome. I learned something new. I saw a lot of people going with the Audio Technica 2020 but after this I'm going to save my money and go w the Shure SM48 for now with Scarlett solo interface. Thank you.
Great video man! I'm in this weird position where I wanted to add a podcast to my channel but also would like to record vocals from time to time. Is there any thing that is middle ground that does both well ?
I've been making content with a Razer mini and having to use OBS plugins to block out the craziness that is my home. Although the VST plugins do great, you have me wanting to upgrade to dynamic. Thank you for this. How do you feel about VST plugins on a dynamic mic?
This was a really cool video, but I do have a question. Is there a good USB dynamic mic that you would recommend? I think the PodMic you suggested sounds great, but with the added cost of getting an interface for it to plug into, it would be helpful to get some suggestions. I don't know too much about mics & there was a lot of great info in this video. Great job! :)
Own both USB and XLR for audiotechnica mic. Love both. Just FYI if you use a cheap cable you might get interference and get like a buzzing noise. Took me a hot minute to figure out. Keep an eye out at pawnshops I got a blue yeti for like 15$, at2020 XLR for 30$, and a blue snowball for 10$. Its cheap enough that even if they didn't work I would be alright because it was so cheap. Going to try a dynamic mic. Thanks
Im very confused when it comes to setting up for podcasting. I am looking at the Rode podast mic, NT1 and the At2040/At2020. I want a Mic that can connect straight to my Sony Zv1 camera for podcasting. I understand you need a USB mic for this. If I need too, how do I use a Audio Interface/phantom power when the only equipment I have is the Sony Zv1 and a Mic. Do audio interfaces only connect to the computer or can I connect it straight to the camera? Cheers.
Hmm. Proximity effect is not microphone-dependent, it's just sound physics. Leaning backward does not demonstrate sound rejection. I am suspicious of the accuracy in the details of this presentation.
I have these exact same mics. I used the AT2020 for recording several people in a room (more often) and now have started to use the PodMic for podcast style recordings. The AT2020 is very good at picking up all sounds without getting clipped. I have recently moved more to using the Rode PodMic... One problem: in Audacity the PodMic works perfectly, meanwhile in OBS the recording is very very low, and I need to crank up the gain. When I crank up the gain, it starts to pick up my breathing and typing and literally everything in the room, very different from how yours seems to work... Any ideas?
I'm considering streaming and I own a MXL 770. I'll get a dynamic microphone when I can afford a replacement, but do you have any tips on getting the best quality with a condenser microphone until then? My setup will be in a decent size closet and I'm able to install some budget soundproofing if that helps. Thanks.
Just curious was that slight hiss because you had both plugged in at the same time? Im currently trying to eliminate that in my set up and I figured it’s because i have a condenser mic but i dont want to bother switching to a dynamic if it wont change that.
Hi! Can I still use the condenser mic even for a regular room (not treated, not a studio) which is fairly quiet and small too so sounds don’t bounce off too much?
Making a whole ass youtube video to prove a point to a homie is next-level alpha.
Agreed, a real chad move from Ken
Loved how concise and clear this video was. Great content!
@Edward Camdyn fake alt account
Loved how straightforward and informative this was. I was surprised when the video ended after all that needed to be said was said, rather than anyone rambling on for 15-30 minutes to get the same stuff across.
Thank you! I will keep that in mind for future videos. I like to get straight to the point. I appreciate this!!!
Very well done! So much information condensed dynamically into just 5 minutes video.
was that a pun? xD
good one!
I see what you did there :)
are you a bot? wtf been going on with TH-cam comments lately, all these praises comments are weird and sus
everybody commenting are bots
Wow, I didn't realize there were different types of microphones, thanks so much for this!!
Wow videos like this are harder to find on YT these days. Straight to the point, informative, brief. No super long intro with product placement or preambles etc.
Much appreciated!!
I saw dozens of video about dynamic and condenser mics and this one was the best explanation and demonstration for me.

Pretty much the best dynamic vs condenser video on TH-cam, especially (but not only) when you're looking for some info about mics and spoken word.
The proximity effect happens for dynamic and condenser microphones due to their polar patterns, not do to their microphone type. I agree with your other points and always recommend dynamic microphones for streaming/gaming/podcasting.
Just the video I been looking for. Thank you Kenny! Everything else was so technical and this just knocks it out short and sweet. Thanks a million!

but with condenser mic you will catch every single sound
most of the streamer i see them buying condenser mics and then use EQ to turn it into dynamic.. just why?! lol
This simple video provided what so many others I've watched have failed to do 😂thanks mate, I feel I'm walking away with some knowledge!
Noise rejection depends on the polar pattern, not mic type. Figure 8 and cardioid pattern mics will both exhibit the proximity effect.
Both podmic and at2020 has the cardioid polar pattern, but as you notice in the video the AT2020 is having less of noise rejection even though the AT2020 has a tighter pattern than the podmic.
Thanks for making me this video, it was very helpful.

Great comparison and explanation, my brother!
Thank you!
Just what I was looking for! Great video!
Thanks for the informative (and funny!) video. This convinced me to buy a dynamic mike for my audiobook readings.
You explained it the best possible way! thank you :)
such a needed informing video while I'm learning about audio for my podcast! thanks so much! gonna order a podmic immediately

Nice comparison of the mics! Thanks.
My first comment on a TH-cam channel in a year plus. Your video is d answer I seek . Not watching anyone videos on mic again n I just subscribed
Love you, bro.
this realy helped me and I almost made a masive mistake
Wish I had found this video at the beginning of my research. Super informative. tysm
Thanks for a very informative and entertaining video. Very helpful
Thanks for keeping video to the point. After wasting so much time I am glad I came across your video, Once again thanks for saving my time.
Thank you for coming straight to the point. This was the 8th or 9th video I have seen today and there was too much bla bla. This was what I was looking for.

Too good sir. Thanks heaps from NZ.
you are a future youtube star in your area
thanks for the video it really helps me out I will have to see about getting a good dynamic mic then
No nonsense, beautifully illustrated examples. Awesome video. Wish all of TH-cam was like this! Thank you. 🙂

Perfect vid bro. Watched so many and this was the best on the subject.
That means a lot to me. Thank you!
we use (4) AT2035's in our game room. we used to use dynamics but we found the condensers had more crisp dialogue

Hi Kenny! Can you please tell me which stand for podmic do you use in this video? Do you happy with it for pod mic?
Great explanation short and clear!
Thank you so much from a newb 😊😁😁😁 amazing vid, keep it up!
great review
Lol you went extra for your buds. I appreciate the audio comparison though.

Thank you brother
I have PD-70 Presonus dynamic broadcasting microphone with a Focusrite solo audio interface.
So do I not have to worry about clipping on a dynamic when singing real close.
Not if you set your levels correctly.
You are so gifted in teaching. I absolutely love your videos please can you test lights for TH-cam ? ❤️
I will make a light video for you. I just got a little one.

yeah I guess I have to get a dynamic mic. don't want people hearing my keyboard. they like to comment on how fast I type...
What if you wanna do both! podcast and sometimes singing
So I want to song but do not have a treated room shouldn't I go for dynamic ? ..
Hilarious and helpful. Great content!
Whats with the plastic package on ur front table ?
That’s a “clown nose” for a microphone I made a video for.
the video i was looking for
is a dynamic mic good for home studios without any acustic treatment for vocals (singing)
Nice info thanks
What if I want to sing but do not have a treated room? Is dynamic better in that instance too?
Yes. Go Dynamic.
and where does the elgato wave 3 fit in??? it's made for streamers and it's a condenser
it doesn't. It's overpriced and underwhelming.
dynamic and condensed ... good content ~ coach

I love this vídeo, but i cant decide, my fear is that i dont like to have my mic in my face, which mic should i take?
Dynamic. Increasing gain will give more sensitivity so you can be a bit further.
Just curious was that slight hiss because you had both plugged in at the same time? Im currently trying to eliminate that in my set up and I figured it’s because i have a condenser mic but i dont want to bother switching to a dynamic if it wont change that.
great info but which one allows me to monitor and listen to my head wireless / Bluetooth etc?
Amazing content.. thanks
Hi! Can I still use the condenser mic even for a regular room (not treated, not a studio) which is fairly quiet and small too so sounds don’t bounce off too much?
You might pick up the reverb. Get a rug. And some couches.
