I've hated Portland for almost 40 years, but we wouldn't be so driven as a club without them. League table doesn't matter when Seattle plays Portland. The league could fold, and this rivalry would remain. We both love Cascadia, our region, we just disagree on the capital.
Agreed. As a Portland Timbers supporter the visceral hatred we have for the Sounders and vice versa make this THE rivalry in MLS. We could go 3-the entire season but if our 3 wins are against the Sounders our season is a success.
I'm convinced there is only one thing that Seattle and Portland fans hate more than each other: places that aren't Cascadia. But it's like the fans consider each other the only ones worthy of spending time hating, everyone else is just so bad it's not even worth the effort.
I still remember being at a restaurant on my first trip to Seattle back in 2012 & they had the sounders game on. Been a fan ever since. I don’t think people around the world realize how much Americans actually love soccer.
@@kabirconsiders It has exploded in the last two decades. While it hasn't quite reached NFL popularity, the fact that it's now a mainstream sport with millions of fans is incredible compared to 20 years ago.
In the 70's the Sounders had Bobby Moore and Geoff Hurst on the team, couldn't believe I was watching two of Englands World Cup winners in person, as well as Arsenal Alan Hudson! Harry Redknapp started his coaching career with the Sounders in 1976 as a player/assisant coach. Grew up watching Pele, Beckenbauer, Cruyff, Best and many more big names in the old NASL league. Great times
It's surreal hearing about that nowadays. But the NASL, and MLS until more recently, relied on so much worldly talent. Part of the growth of the game here in North America includes the growth of academies, the building of great new stadiums, and more coverage of games on television and streaming services. We get the occasional Zlatan, but we're starting to nurture young talent on this side of the globe. Doubt we'll ever be as big as the Premier League, but I'm still being surprised by what's coming. (I'm a Seattle fan, but only because of Drew Carey!)
Don't know much about the MLS, but I find it funny that at the start of the video they said "Don't forget about Vancouver" and then spends the rest of the video not mentioning Vancouver.
Yes but the beginning of the rivalry was about Seattle and Portland and the video only talks about Seattle and Portland in the title. And yes, at this point it's a rivalry between Seattle and Portland. Vancouver is just the third wheel hoping to take a spot every now and again.
I think Vancouver is forgotten a lot of the time probably because they haven't been good recently. They've only made the playoffs once in the last 5 seasons or something like that
If ambitious for a longer one "3-Year Grudge Match: Seattle vs. Toronto in MLS Cup Finals" on MLS's channel. Seattle and Toronto met 3 times in 4 years in MLS cup. something that is unheard in Modern MLS, a league designed for parity.
It’s kinda weird that things have worked out that way, but yeah, Seattle and Toronto meeting so often in the playoffs is an interesting thing. That said, Toronto FC v Montreal is a PROPER rivalry.
Philadelphia Union are sponsored by a bread company, a few years back the Union supporters cut a loaf of bread with a toy chainsaw to mock the Timbers after a goal
Sporting KC had brisket Bob, who'd cut a slice of Brisket meat when they scored against the timbers. We'd take off our green colors and walk into their section to get free food. Then walk back. The meat was so good we didn't even care we got scored on
@@JusNoBS420 after the Champion's league action, it's shaping up to being Atlanta. I guess this weekend's game against them will decide if the bad blood continues
That atmosphere was unlike anything I've ever seen or experienced in my life. It was really cathartic for the city because although men's teams in other top pro sports leagues had won championships before, it was the first time they had done it in their home stadium/arena since the Metropolitans won the Stanley Cup in 1917. Even the Seattle Storm have only won 1 of their 4 WNBA titles at home, although hopefully #5 will be at home this year.
This is an OLD rivalry... dating back to the NASL, when Pele played for the New York Cosmos if that's any indication. It may not be as old as some from MLB, NFL or NBA... but, it's just as fierce.
@@kabirconsiders In Vancouver the 'Caps carried their fans with them from NASL through minor leagues to MLS, some club supporters are into 3rd and 4th generation. My Dad took me to Whitecap games when I was a teen, and I'm 64 now, taking the grandkids.
Watched Portland & Seattle play against each other in the A League. Seattle joined the NASL one year before Portland. 1975. Big brother. Little brother.
The owners of the MLS club originally put the name up for a vote in (i think) 2008. Soundes wasn't on the list, but the fans had a write-in campaign to get the club named Sounders FC to continue the history of clubs that came before.
Probably paved the way for other clubs to keep their names as well. MLS did a real poor job early on of incorporating previous decades of soccer history into the league.
Thanks Kabir for reacts and show the Greatest Soccer Rivalry in North American. Its was great to see and feel how all this did started, also seeing how the peoples were showing their pride team and history.
These are 3 teams in what in North America passes for relatively close proximity. You can actually catch a commuter train between them- its roughly 300 miles from Vancouver, BC to Portland with Seattle almost exactly 1/2 way in between. Living on the west side of the Puget Sound - there are ferries crossing the water, filled with fans on game day.
@@kabirconsiders Well, to be honest... I'm just a casual observer... but I have to say that it is not hard to notice the presence that either club has in their respective cities/ regions. I would say that Vancouver is likely similarly passionate, but they have not enjoyed the success of late that Seattle and Portland have. Soccer in the US has really had a meteoric rise. From basically almost nothing before 1970, to a small pro league - and more importantly, many youth leagues, in multiple regions, before 1980... and it has kept on building. The fact that women's soccer came up so fast and so strong has also been really enjoyable to watch.
As a member of the Emerald City Supporters, the supporters group of the Seattle Sounders, this did me a world of joy seeing you react to this. I was already a fan of yours after you had been giving MLS a good amount of respect, compared to a lot of your fellow British nationals and others on the European continent. But seeing you react to this video, though a joy, presents a now dated view of the situation. Since 2018, Seattle has firmly and strongly placed their foot on the throat of this rivalry. Little brothers 1 and 2 have well fallen behind, and now that Seattle has won ANOTHER MLS Cup since this video was released, the Kings of Cascadia are truly the team in the most beautiful City in the USA; Seattle, Washington. 💚💙💚💙💚💙💚💙💚💙💚💙
THANK YOU KABIR!! So glad you reacted to this historic football rivalry. My love of football started in 1975 watching Pele, Best, and the other greats of the 1970s then taking my kids to see Beckham, Henry, Lamps etc competing against our home team. Those early footballers planted the seed in the Pacific Northwest and men/women football is massive here.
Welcome to American football... and thanks for acknowledging we've come a ways. I'm an original 1974 Seattle Sounder from the NASL days. I'm an atheist but I thank God I'm a Seattle fan. Eternal Blue, Forever Green! #EBFG
One thing the video doesn't mention is that Seattle's manager is a lifelong Sounder. He signed with them in 1980 when he was 17 and played with them until the old NASL folded. He briefly played for the new version of the team when they relaunched in the 90s and became the manager in 2002 when the new owner came in. Together, they helped save the team from going under while winning 2 championships in the second division and have been working together ever since then. When the team moved to MLS in 2009, he agreed to be the top assistant coach so they could bring in someone with more experience at that level. When that coach was fired midway through 2016, he took over as interim manager. Although nobody expected him to become the permanent manager, he led the team to win its first MLS Cup months later and has guided them to 4 MLS Cup Finals in 5 years. He currently has the best playoff winning percentage of any manager in the league's 25 year history.
On the anniversary of the red card wedding, where The Sounders we’re down to 8 men and Clint Dempsey’s red card was for ripping the referees note book 😂
THANK YOU !!! We get East Coast Bias where most don't even know we have teams let alone from the 70s. Here in Washington they had little soccer leagues for the kids.
Seattle is my hometown club -- followed them in all their incarnations since the 70s. No other of the recent manufactured rivalries (LAG v LAFC) have the depth of passion as Seattle v Portland. And, just to rub into Portland supporters, Seattle has been to 4 out of the last 5 MLS Cup Finals and won 2 of them.
i like your opinion and general outlook on our league as well as its growth. There's many people out there that seemingly don't want us to succeed on a national level as well. It's refreshing hearing a Brit's positive perspective on the sport in the US.
So many of the soccer influences in the Pacific NW came from the English second (mainly) division blokes who introduced the game to us in the NASL days. Those players were ambassadors throughout their communities. In Seattle you have coach Schmetzer who grew up in Seattle, played in Seattle, and now coaches Seattle. Many of their staff are legends for the club. In Portland during the 70’s and 80’s we had Jimmy Conway, John Bain, the Gant brothers, and Clive Charles all of whom stayed and raised up the Portland soccer community. Charles coached both the men’s and women’s University of Portland Soccer team’s to national prominence (coaching the women to a National title and providing many US women’s National stars). He was also one of the first prominent black players (along with another former Timber, Clyde Best) to break the color barrier at West Ham United in the old premier league in England. So, both cities blessed with great soccer/football histories to be proud of.
Great post. In what may have been the best women's game played to date, the USWNT vs Canada in the semifinals of the London Olympics played at Wembley, Rapinoe and Sinclair exchanged the first 5 goals. Both players developed under Clive at U of Portland winning a national championship.
Seattle has become a pretty dominant club in MLS since this video was put out. The organization truly expects to win trophies at this point, which is great for Sounders fans. I think they were right on the cusp of where they are now when this was made. Also a fun fact, Seattle has never once missed the playoffs since joining the league.
Fun fact: The Seattle keeper Stephen Frei, who made the save at 9:28, got a tattoo of his save on his left hand after the game to signify the first Sounders MLS cup win. He was named as the MVP of the game. Not much offense in that game to be honest and the save was better than winning penalty kick (sorry Torres). Also Seattle now has 2 MLS cup so we can hold that over Portland for now.
Been a Sounders fan since '09 when they entered the league. Love the team so much, quite dominant in recent years, with four MLS cup finals in five years. Reluctant respect to the Timbers too though honestly, I can't deny that they're a quality team.

@@kabirconsiders he's been involved with every iteration of the club. Real local guy, and the fans love him. Kind of coach that's willing to have a pint with the fans.
Since 2015, No MLS Cup has been played without either Seattle or Portland. Seattle has been in the League final in 2016, 2017, 2019, and 2020. Portland in 2015 and 2018. Seattle has won two titles, Portland has won once. In 2021, thus far, Seattle is the top of the table and we are unbeaten. Hopeful for another title run this year too.
But don't be surprised is Portland ends up challenging them later in the season. The Timbers have been hit so hard by injuries that they've had an uneven start, but as they recover those players, they are going to be very tough to beat.
Seattle and Portland have a double header coming up soon where the men's teams and the women's teams are both playing each other on the same day, and in fact the women's match is going to be at Lumen Field (where the Sounders and Seahawks play, normally the women's team play down in Tacoma.)

The women's side of this rivalry shouldn't be dismissed. The quality of players on both sides is ridiculous. Five of the expected USWNT starting lineup is on both teams. Add in Franch as the backup USWNT keeper and Sinclair for Canada and there's at least 7 world class players.
Portlander here, and while I have to objectively acknowledge the Sounders' successes, I'll be damned if I'll have a good word to say about that fishing village and its teams/supporters. ;) Side note about Portland: the Timbers' sister club, Thorns FC (NWSL) is basically unique in the world of women's football (or women's sports in general), averaging well over 20,000 spectators (yes, four zeros) per match, pre-plague. World class roster (including five players regularly called into the dominant US women's national side, a couple on the cusp, and Christine Sinclair, the all-time goal scorer in international play, male or female (186!). Soccer City USA...
Seattle objectively runs Cascadia. Most league Championships, tied for most Cascadia cups, most US Open cups, Most supporters shields. Portland is a close 2nd and Vancouver is not even in the conversation lol that lady is trippin calling Vancouver the king of Cascadia hahaha she on drugs.
I'm a Seattle fan and they don't have the most league championships they don't have the most U.S open cups and they don't have the most support era shields. But they are still the best team.
@@0bi-Wan-Ken0bi In terms of Cascadia yes we do? Portland has never won US Open Cup, Vancouver has 1 Voyageurs Cup. We have 4 Open Cups. We have 1 supporters shield neither of them have one and we have 2 MLS Cups, Portland has 1 and Vancouver 0. So what exactly are you talking about?
Thanks for watching this. I'm from Seattle and it's good to spread awareness about how we have to suffer Portland's existence lololol Vancouver is a part of the cascadia cup as well but I just bring myself to hate them as much as the Timbers. Toronto however, that is a Canadian team I can't stand
Great to see this level of attention. I'm RCTID (Rose City 'Til I Die) since 1975 but rivalries are best when we're all fighting for the top spot and trophies. Up the Timbers!
The oldest soccer club in Canada is Victoria West FC, founded in 1896. The oldest soccer club in the United States is Kearney Scots, founded in 1895. Both are amateur clubs. Vic West play in the Vancouver Island Soccer League. Kearny Scots play in the North Jersey Soccer League. So yes, the game does have a long history over here, despite what others would have you believe.
@@kabirconsiders I've encountered that attitude from Brits and other Europeans for years, even the expats who moved here. Educating these newcomers is a constant job.
First time I visited Portland was 2009, two years before they joined the MLS. They had Timbers flags, scarves and coasters in every single bar we visited over a couple neighborhoods. More Timbers representation than Trail Blazers. That's how much the city was behind the club. Also was living in Paraguay in 2015, went to see if the food court at the nearby shopping mall had the MLS final on (they would play La Liga, Bundesliga Serie A all morning/afternoon and move west to MLS and South American leagues as the day went on. IF no live matches, re-broadcasts. Always futbol.) ... sure enough, they were playing Timbers v Crew not on the regular mounted tvs, but the 3 tv across, 2 tv down MEGASCREEN. Think I converted a couple locals to the Timbers when they saw the Gringo in Green intently watching the match while downing Pilsen. Finally got to attend a match in 2018 with a friend sitting immediately to the right of the Timbers Army. Timber Joey apparently seldom ventures too far wide of that section made it over to ours, hoisting a fresh cut stump after a Timbers goal. Was a great time, great environment, and great Oregon beer to drink at local watering holes afterwards.
The Timbers current keeper who we see at 13:34,Steve Clark, happens to be the keeper who's mistake Valeri capitalized on early in the 2015 mls cup game (8:30). If you can't beat em, join em I guess. Also I'd recommend watching the Derby Days episode about this rivalry. It is quite complimentary to this video in the information it gives. It particularly goes into the origin of Timber Jim and the log cutting tradition as well as a few other traditions.
It's a great rivalry, and like most good ones, there are different things that each side can hang their hat on. The big ones for me are the number of MLS Cups, 2-1 Seattle, and the all-time series is 61-48-13 Seattle.
I became I Sounders fan when I was stationed in Washington. The fans have a pub we all go to and we march to the Stadium chanting. I was hooked, I seriously felt like I was in London. The police block off the street so we can march safely. When I went to a Portland game they made a tifo and I was across from the Ultras and it was insane. But fans banter but are friendly, we don't fight or feel threatened in anyway which is nice.
React to old school mls penalty shootouts or penalty kicks they are awesome Also react to Toronto Seattle mls cup rivalry they met in the final 2016 2017 and 2019

@@kabirconsiders He did! Also...a perfect illustration of how much football has grown in the US...Dempsey's transfer fee to Fulham was $4 million, a record for an American at the time(2006). Pulisic's to Chelsea was $74 million.
Born and raised in Portland. Grew up watching the Timbers VS Seattle since 1975. The rivalry is REAL. Weeks are made and destroyed depending on whether your team wins or not.
Fact of the matter is that the Sounders are the only MLS team to make the playoffs in every year of their existence in the league(2008- present). And at the rate this year is going, this streak isn't ending anytime soon.
Another MLS rivalry to look into is the New York Red Bulls and DC United rivalry. Those games would get brutal and there was genuine hatred from both sides and it ramped up each year
This is how crazy the playoff format is in MLS. The year Seattle won their first MLS Cup in 2016, Seattle was 2nd to last place in the Western Conference. They were 22 pts behind the conference leader, FC Dallas mid-season in week 20. They were for all intent and purposes, dead to rights. No one thought they would make the playoffs. The head coach Sigi Schmid who coached 2 teams, Columbus Crew and LA Galaxy to MLS titles prior to coaching the Sounders was just sacked and asst. coach Brian Smetzer was put in as interim coach. But fortunes turned around on July 31 when their designated #10 DP from Uruguay, Nicolas Lodeiro who played on the Uruguay National Team and signed from Boca Juniors made his debut for the Sounders. That match with LA Galaxy ended in a draw and every match afterword put them in the position to make the final (7th) playoff spot at the end of the regular season. They then won all of their playoff matches to the final. This would never happen in other leagues. Seattle since their first season in MLS back in 2009 has never missed making the playoffs. Making it to 4 finals in 5 years, wining 2 MLS Cups, 1 Supporter's Shield, 4 straight U.S. Open Cups, and 4 of 6 Cascadia Cups in the MLS era. No other team since has been so consistent.
Part of the reason Seattle vs Portland is the best rivalry is because it goes back to the mid 70s when both teams were in the original NASL. It continued through multiple league iterations until now when both are in MLS. So this is a 50 year old rivalry, no other MLS teams have the history the Seattle vs Portland rivalry has.
Im a Galaxy fan but I lived in Portland for 3 year and Timbers atmosphere is one the best sports atmosphere in North America. People are engaged and the crowd is insane. I went to a lot of games regardless if it was against La Galaxy and I loved being in Providence Park. Kind of miss Portland for that aspect alone
Some context. Up here in Cascadia we have our three cities and 10 million people tucked up here. Vancouver is about 300 miles (500 is km) from Portland and Seattle is right in the middle. Next closest city to any part of Cascadia? Over 600 miles (over 1000km) away. We are our own little region tucked in our corner. A Vancouverite will identify with a Portlander more than they will with central and eastern Canadians. When we compete, we are competing four the dominance of our little mini-country. Portland and Seattle, both being American have a very love hate relationship. They our brother so when it's versus outsiders we have each other's back. But that sibling rivalry is strong. When it comes to us competing for dominance in the region, few people fight more fiercely. Signed, a man who grew up in Portland, moved to Seattle for college, and low lives back in Portland. I am a Sounders fan and worked for the team, in the band, during the sounder's inaugural MLS season.
As another example of how popular football (soccer) is getting in the US -- St. Louis City FC (an expansion team in 2023) had deposits for 30,000 season ticket seats in the first 15 minutes that they went on sale, and then 50,000 seats in the following 24 hours. That's not only a record for the MLS, but for every other major sport in the country. I recently moved to St. Louis for work and the new stadium is being built a little less than a mile from my house and the speed in which they're making progress on it is crazy. The whole city can't wait for that first match.
You should watch the documentary "Soccertown USA" to get an even better understanding of the sport in the states. It's probably too long to make a react video to, but it's definitely worth watching!
Hey, Bro. We've chatted a bit before. I really like your videos... especially the football related ones.... American football (soccer) fan here... you do a great job of hosting, and your videos are really engaging.... and I'm an old fart, LOL! Thanks for giving MLS and the USMNT a little attention and credit. It's highly appreciated. We really look up to the Premiere League, and English football in particular, here. But a lot of times, English fans really have a go at us American fans. I don't quite get it since the Premiere League is the best in the world, and England are legends of the game. Anyway, I'm now a subscriber. OH! By the way... I'm a highly seasoned video editor. It's really great to see a Brit not crapping on soccer in America. I lived in Atlanta for 8 years (We moved in August of 2019) and became a fan right around when our team started, and the games were great. Where I live now Americans themselves are talking bad about it. One person I know said it's "sad" and another person I was around said something along the lines of "I don't watch American soccer... @@kabirconsiders As a Revolution fan, I wish I could agree with including Boston. But no, we’re still working on it. Average attendance swings between 10K up to 20K in a 65K stadium built for the NFL and situated 30 miles outside of Boston. Every attempt to build a soccer specific stadium near Boston has been met with a “not in my backyard” mentality. Our professional women’s team (Boston Breakers) even went bankrupt and disbanded (criminal embezzlement might have been involved, it’s still being litigated in the court system). And now, there are substantiated rumors that the team may be ready to replace the last original MLS team logo with an abomination that looks like Glasgow Rangers and Crystal Palace had a hate baby (l might be bitter). Boston / New England is ruled by the Red Sox, Patriots, Bruins, and Celtics (MLB, NFL, NHL, NBA), not necessarily in that order. The Revolution hardly ever get a mention, and when they do it’s on the traffic report to warn that “there’s a game at Gillette (the stadium name) coming up”. Hardly ever mentioning the team’s name. No, Boston is not in the same category as Seattle, Portland, or Atlanta when it comes to soccer. 😢
Let tell you about Seattle man, I've lived here my whole life. We've always had a chip on our shoulders. A lot of the country looks at us as basically southern Alaska. An afterthought unless a major windstorm happens or a volcano blows up (look up Mt St Helens, I'll toss a link below) And Portland, because it's smaller, is kind of our little brother with an even bigger chip. Vancouver too. We're so far away from everyone else out there. It took us a long time to get a lot of professional sports at all. Both Portland and Seattle have reputations for being really posh progressive cities, but once you get out of the city proper it gets blue collar real quick. Even more so once you cross the mountains.
As a sounders fan I'm so excited to see this! I love the Sounders for many reasons but I think the Seattle v Portland rivalry is one of the best parts about being a fan for either team. The players and the fans care so muh and its amazing to see. EBFG
I'm a Sounder Supporter through and through and have to comment that most of the matches I've ever seen have never been a full strength squad really for either team. In my opinion I believe that adds to the back and forth of the rivalry. The schedule is often in favor of one team depending on the previous year. If they were good the year before, expect a tough schedule. The next match between these two is going to be intense for sure. 100% this is the best rivalry in the US.
Keep you're eye on us later this summer. On August 29th, there will be a Seattle v Portscum double-header at Lumen Field, where OL Reign take on the Thorns from the NWSL (our top flight women's league) in the matinee match, with the Sounders v Timbers as the night cap. The Reign/Thorns rivalry also has a salty history, even though it is comparatively new.
I'm kind of surprised that the San Jose Earthquakes aren't part of the Cascadia Cup. Like Portland, Seattle & Vancouver they go back to the old NASL days, down to keeping the nickname. Most other cities in the MLS also had roots from back then, but they didn't go so far as keeping the nickname & emphasizing their soccer traditions.
I had family that lived in both places for a time but I like Seattle a bit more because I like the Mariners in baseball so I already have a team to root for 😂😂😂
Yes I am so glad you finally got to this! I love the rivalry but the Timbers know they will always be second best. #EBFG Also either Seattle or Portland has played for MLS Cup every year since 2015. Portland played in 2 winning 1 and Seattle played in 4 winning 2.

I recommend watching "It's not hatred...it's Montreal vs Toronto" featuring Montreal Impact and Toronto FC. One of the best rivalries in MLS. They've played some crazy games including 2016 MLS playoffs and 2017 Canadian Championship (2nd leg especially)
Also should be pointed out that Portland and really the state of Oregon as a whole has a bit (a lot) of a little dog complex. Especially in sports. So they bring a chihuahua attitude to their sports rivalries.
You should react to the rival between toronto fc and montreal impact. This rival has been going on since the 1800s. It is a rival that goes on for every sport, language, and culture.
My old select coaches were all sounder players or in some cases well known English expats back in the 80s.... a lot of English ex players settled in Seattle
FWIW, Seattle and Portland (and the states of Washington and Oregon by extension) are natural rivals in just about everything, borne out of their relative isolation to the rest of the United States. While perhaps not in as an explicit form as the Cascadia Cup, the rivalry has existed to one extent or another throughout every sporting competition that's managed to include the two cities/states, from the NBA to minor (and junior) league hockey and minor league baseball and college athletics. It'll be very interesting to see if and how a Cascadia rivalry develops in the National Hockey League when the Seattle Kraken enter the league next season to do battle with the Vancouver Canucks.
Seattle was the first MLS team to pull in 70k+ fans for a match. That match was against the Timbers. Since that time, Altanta has pulled in some whopper crowds too, but watch out Premier League - we're gonna come for you. ;)

Still a garbage city. #RCTID
Eff Seattle. #burymeingreenandgold
I remember a young Peter Beardsley also played for Vancouver.
I had no idea the sounders were around that long and before mls
Don't know much about the MLS, but I find it funny that at the start of the video they said "Don't forget about Vancouver" and then spends the rest of the video not mentioning Vancouver.
Good observation 😂
that's basically how the rivalry is
Yes but the beginning of the rivalry was about Seattle and Portland and the video only talks about Seattle and Portland in the title. And yes, at this point it's a rivalry between Seattle and Portland. Vancouver is just the third wheel hoping to take a spot every now and again.
I think Vancouver is forgotten a lot of the time probably because they haven't been good recently. They've only made the playoffs once in the last 5 seasons or something like that
Lol yeah, as a Sounders fan it's always been Timbers that I think of as our rival. Portland has always been the main villain.
I’ll check it out!
That’s pretty funny 😂
Sporting KC had brisket Bob, who'd cut a slice of Brisket meat when they scored against the timbers. We'd take off our green colors and walk into their section to get free food. Then walk back.
The meat was so good we didn't even care we got scored on
Bimbo bread…lol
Seriously though who is the Philadelphia Union’s rival??
@@JusNoBS420 after the Champion's league action, it's shaping up to being Atlanta. I guess this weekend's game against them will decide if the bad blood continues
@@TheSafae123 As an Atlanta fan, after what happened, I can see myself hating Philly pretty easily.
I was at the 2019 MLS Cup rooting for Seattle; it was one of the best soccer experiences of my life.
Must have been one hell of a game!
That’s impressive, most Europeans think everything about North American football is only like a decade old
@@kabirconsiders In Vancouver the 'Caps carried their fans with them from NASL through minor leagues to MLS, some club supporters are into 3rd and 4th generation.
That’s an interesting piece of history!
Absolutely, it’s cool seeing how rivalries build and grow over time
They didn't mention Dempsey and Red Card Wedding!?!
Seattle ended the match with 8 players and Dempsey got a permanent suspension from the USOC
From what I’ve seen Portland and Seattle are probably the most passionate football (soccer) cities in the U.S., or am I wrong?
It’s crazy how the situation has changed. I thought you and Portland were still bitter, even rivals!
@@kabirconsiders Oh, we absolutely are still bitter rivals who despise one another! And that will always be.
This guy called us Sounders fans "douchy" a few comments above...
Thanks Travis, I really enjoyed this one ☺️
Welcome to American football... and thanks for acknowledging we've come a ways. I'm an original 1974 Seattle Sounder from the NASL days. I'm an atheist but I thank God I'm a Seattle fan. Eternal Blue, Forever Green! #EBFG
I’m glad to see how far it’s come!
Fun fact, Seattle and Portland have represented the western conference in the last 7 mls finals, aka, one of them has been in the finals since 2015
One thing the video doesn't mention is that Seattle's manager is a lifelong Sounder.
Thanks for explaining this to me mate!
On the anniversary of the red card wedding, where The Sounders we’re down to 8 men and Clint Dempsey’s red card was for ripping the referees note book 😂
Clint’s a madman 😂
Not that anyone ever advocates violence, but if Caleb Porter has a punchable face for Seattle fans then Clint Dempsey is Portland‘s punching bag
@@PDXurbia not recomended
Hence why I'm not advocating it lol
@@PDXurbia I remember hearing about Dempsey's transfer to Seattle and thinking "aw, man...not I gotta hate Clint Dempsey?"

This rivalry deserves more attention for sure
Wow one of these 2 teams has played in the MLS Cup each year from 2015 to last year. Quite impressive.
Absolutely. From what I’ve seen Seattle v Portland is definitely the rivalry with the most history
Yea, but we popped her cherry! #ptfc
i like your opinion and general outlook on our league as well as its growth. There's many people out there that seemingly don't want us to succeed on a national level as well. It's refreshing hearing a Brit's positive perspective on the sport in the US.
Thanks mate :) it’s great to see America really starting to embrace the sport
“There’s No Pity in the Rose City”!!!
I love it
So many of the soccer influences in the Pacific NW came from the English second (mainly) division blokes who introduced the game to us in the NASL days.
It’s awesome seeing the US game grow and blossom. I knew it was an inevitability!
Great post. In what may have been the best women's game played to date, the USWNT vs Canada in the semifinals of the London Olympics played at Wembley, Rapinoe and Sinclair exchanged the first 5 goals. Both players developed under Clive at U of Portland winning a national championship.
Thank you for seeing this video
I really enjoyed this one!
Observing the power dynamic between the two clubs is fascinating. Constantly going from one club to the other
Fun fact: The Seattle keeper Stephen Frei, who made the save at 9:28, got a tattoo of his save on his left hand after the game to signify the first Sounders MLS cup win. He was named as the MVP of the game. Not much offense in that game to be honest and the save was better than winning penalty kick (sorry Torres).
Also Seattle now has 2 MLS cup so we can hold that over Portland for now.
That’s awesome, Stephen Frei sounds like a good lad!
It's Stefan Frei
Been a Sounders fan since '09 when they entered the league. Love the team so much, quite dominant in recent years, with four MLS cup finals in five years. Reluctant respect to the Timbers too though honestly, I can't deny that they're a quality team.

The women's side of this rivalry shouldn't be dismissed. The quality of players on both sides is ridiculous. Five of the expected USWNT starting lineup is on both teams. Add in Franch as the backup USWNT keeper and Sinclair for Canada and there's at least 7 world class players.

Side note about Portland: the Timbers' sister club, Thorns FC (NWSL) is basically unique in the world of women's football (or women's sports in general), averaging well over 20,000 spectators (yes, four zeros) per match, pre-plague. World class roster (including five players regularly called into the dominant US women's national side, a couple on the cusp, and Christine Sinclair, the all-time goal scorer in international play, male or female (186!).
That’s awesome to know. According to some Brits, soccer was only discovered by North America a week ago 😂
@@kabirconsiders I've encountered that attitude from Brits and other Europeans for years, even the expats who moved here. Educating these newcomers is a constant job.
Also the US Open Cup (now called the Lamar Hunt Open Cup) is the longest continuous soccer competition in the US. Started in 1915
First time I visited Portland was 2009, two years before they joined the MLS.
I’ll put the Derby days vid on my list!
It's a great rivalry, and like most good ones, there are different things that each side can hang their hat on. The big ones for me are the number of MLS Cups, 2-1 Seattle, and the all-time series is 61-48-13 Seattle.

But fans banter but are friendly, we don't fight or feel threatened in anyway which is nice.
Something to consider: Sounders have made the playoffs every single year since 2009.
It may have seemed like 40K fans during that double post game but Portlands stadium at the time only held about 22k fans

Awesome team mate!
Holy cow that is a crazy system!

It’s awesome learning about the history of this rivalry. Really goes back a while, adds to the authenticity
Thanks for providing some context Sam, it’s awesome watching the American game grow and blossom

You Definitely deserves way more subscribers my man new sub
That’s so much mate :)
Let tell you about Seattle man, I've lived here my whole life.
We've always had a chip on our shoulders. A lot of the country looks at us as basically southern Alaska. An afterthought unless a major windstorm happens or a volcano blows up (look up Mt St Helens, I'll toss a link below)
And Portland, because it's smaller, is kind of our little brother with an even bigger chip. Vancouver too. We're so far away from everyone else out there.
It took us a long time to get a lot of professional sports at all. Both Portland and Seattle have reputations for being really posh progressive cities, but once you get out of the city proper it gets blue collar real quick. Even more so once you cross the mountains.

There's the link. My grandfather was logger in that area, Sunday was his day off
Seattle sounds pretty cool to me if I’m being honest, from what I saw in this vid it kind of has a European vibe to it
Portland has never been posh, but otherwise I agree. Portland’s always lived in Seattle’s shadow so there’s lots of animosity.
@@kabirconsiders we have been compared to Amsterdam as their American counterpart
As a sounders fan I'm so excited to see this! I love the Sounders for many reasons but I think the Seattle v Portland rivalry is one of the best parts about being a fan for either team. The players and the fans care so muh and its amazing to see. EBFG
I worked the gate at Sounders games for 3 seasons. They play at the Seahawks home field.
The atmosphere must have been lively right?
I'm a Sounder Supporter through and through and have to comment that most of the matches I've ever seen have never been a full strength squad really for either team. In my opinion I believe that adds to the back and forth of the rivalry. The schedule is often in favor of one team depending on the previous year. If they were good the year before, expect a tough schedule. The next match between these two is going to be intense for sure. 100% this is the best rivalry in the US.
I need to get to one of your matches ASAP!
Omg their playing this weekend 830 est 530 pst on fs1
Providence Park holds 25k, yes, we’re loud, but it also helps that the shape of the stadium is a tall 3 sided bowl and enhances the sound.
You guys make an impressive amount of noise!
@@kabirconsiders we do it for every game🤙🏽
Keep you're eye on us later this summer. On August 29th, there will be a Seattle v Portscum double-header at Lumen Field, where OL Reign take on the Thorns from the NWSL (our top flight women's league) in the matinee match, with the Sounders v Timbers as the night cap. The Reign/Thorns rivalry also has a salty history, even though it is comparatively new.
Portscum 😂😂 gets me every time
@@kabirconsiders yeah, an old boss of mine from Southampton laughed at me when I said that 🤣
If you're ever in the states, I'll take you to a Sounders match. I respect your channel too much to let you go to a timbers match.
Yep, who would want to go to that pile of garbage "stadium" they play at lol. GREAT atmosphere though, ill give em that.
Thanks bro :)
Based on what you’ve said they should definitely be included within it
@@kabirconsiders TY for replying again.
I'm a big Seattle Mariners/Seahawks fan but the Sounders don't really make my radar lol. Glad they're good, I guess!
I had family that lived in both places for a time but I like Seattle a bit more because I like the Mariners in baseball so I already have a team to root for 😂😂😂
I really need to get my ass to Seattle, I need to visit pike place market!
I was one of the people who recommended it and i am a sounders fan since 2015
Thanks mate, this was awesome to watch!
Yes I am so glad you finally got to this! I love the rivalry but the Timbers know they will always be second best. #EBFG
Also either Seattle or Portland has played for MLS Cup every year since 2015. Portland played in 2 winning 1 and Seattle played in 4 winning 2.
I really enjoyed this one, made me want to get to a live game!
@@kabirconsiders Sounder ticket holder. You make it over when Pandemmy goes away, they are yours for this match have to enjoy a Cascadia tilt in Lumen
Love seeing the MLS vid uploads, can’t wait for the reactions to the first El Trafico and the PHI-LAFC 2020 game. Add PHI-NYRB playoffs 2019 to the list of those too!
Thanks brother ☺️ more on the way!
I was about ten feet away when Dempsey ripped up Radford's notebook…and just about that close when he delivered his "Portland can’t say s*hit" line at the next season's championship celebration.
#EBFG 💙🏆🏆💚
I recommend watching "It's not hatred...it's Montreal vs Toronto" featuring Montreal Impact and Toronto FC. One of the best rivalries in MLS. They've played some crazy games including 2016 MLS playoffs and 2017 Canadian Championship (2nd leg especially)
I’ll check it out!
They’ve had Sounders matches at their home stadium, with over 70,000 people in attendance.
That’s insane! I bet the crowd noise was massive
one of the best youtubers- here from chicago
Thanks so much bro ☺️
Also should be pointed out that Portland and really the state of Oregon as a whole has a bit (a lot) of a little dog complex. Especially in sports. So they bring a chihuahua attitude to their sports rivalries.
I'm a Seattle guy so.... Can confirm
You should react to the rival between toronto fc and montreal impact. This rival has been going on since the 1800s. It is a rival that goes on for every sport, language, and culture.
I’ll try to find a vid that discusses it to put on my list!
Other than the fact that I hate every single Flounder up North, we get along just fine.
Keep Portland weird buddy. Go Sounders 😁
Seattle was the first MLS team to pull in 70k+ fans for a match. That match was against the Timbers.
Since that time, Altanta has pulled in some whopper crowds too, but watch out Premier League - we're gonna come for you. ;)
Glad to see the soccer fanbase in the US starting to get huge!
