You might think the stigma of HIV and AIDS is gone, but a few months ago I made a comment on a a popular, but lighthearted channel's "history of AIDS" upload. I wrote that people efficiently teated for HIV weren't infectious. That comment garnered so much hate and ridicule that I was feeling insecure and humiliatied in a way I haven't felt since the last millennium. Comparing HIV to Covid-19 ingratiate me a bit, because AIDS has had so much more impact on lives over the world that were - at the time - considered the lowest on the food chain of humanity. As a "pozzed" gay man today, who won't die of the virus, I crouch on the shoulders of giants and I can only hope to be able to do them worthy. I have far bigger problems than my infection these days, and I *always* remind myself how privileged I am.

This was a real pandemic. 1. Completely new pathogen 2. Global epidemic spread 3. High mortality - If you got it, 99% chance of death 4. Years of life lost was ridiculous.

I think the definition of the word "pandemic" does not actually quantify the mortality rate, and for good reason. Illness can be debilitating even if it is not lethal. That said, there is clearly a difference between an illness that is, for the most part, not lethal -- and one which is practically always deadly. And we can argue that so far, the only "good news" about HIV/AIDS is that we know how to manage some aspects of it. The only true and absolute victory, in my opinion, is that we have learned how to allow HIV+ couples to have healthy HIV- babies (because it is the only case in which we know that the HIV virus was eradicated entirely). This is particularly important because so many young people's lives nowadays are crippled by HIV+ diagnoses -- and the fact that they can have healthy children is likely to give them some hope. I do wish that treatment were more readily available in countries that desperately need it. I wish pharmaceuticals relented on their quest of getting ever richer by doing the world a favour and giving life-saving medicine away for free when people just can't afford it. I wish we found a cure for HIV, since Dr. Fauci seems somewhat unsure of our ability to find a vaccine. But, more than anything, I wish politics stopped, every once in a while, being about voting, and that politicians took a chance and actually tried to save lives regardless of political costs. Wouldn't that be a real miracle?
@@thehangmancometh1813 They 'thought' it was. I don't know why they thought that a virus would only infect gays or druggies... that's not how any virus works. That bigotry literally allowed HIV to spread into the blood supply in a big way for years.

I was a student nurse living in Brighton,UK when AIDS happened. Brighton was and still iis a really homosexual friendly town. I remember how everybody was terrified. I shared a flat with a gay couple who as far as I know were very faithful and in love with each other. It helped as I would have worried about them! We have come a long way!

Epidemic means spreads through a particular region, pan means World wide. Endemic means that AIDs was 'endemic in gay men, or IV druggies etc.
