My uncle used to supply the whole family with food from his garden of peas okra and butter beans he also raised pigs and cows we didn’t have much else but we were NEVER hungry I didn’t realize it then but we were rich with God, Family, Love and good food !!! ❤ Miss you Uncle Bo 😢

I am really hinting hard on rabbits. They do not require much and are quiet , can produce quite a lot of meat. Manure is good for a garden , fur can be sold. Lots of information on the subject here on You Tube. Good luck.

A lot clicked for me when you said the part about how you get ham, bacon, ribs, or shoulder from a pig, but with chickens you DO get sick of .... chicken. I never thought about pig like that, thank you so much. I'm definitely inspired to open my mind.

Great tips for beginners. Pigs need competition to grow well/fast! I put an automatic float connected to a low-pressure hose in my 55-gallon barrel so that it stays full.
A float valve on the water barrel inlet would make sure it wouldn't overflow if you left the hose running too long. If all your fittings are up to the pressure, you could leave the hose on all the time while it's not freezing, and the float valve would manage it for you. One less thing to remember!
My husband and I are in a perpetual debate about what should be added next. I say quail or dwarf dairy goats. My husband is dead set on pigs. We're both insanely stubborn, so I may as well learn about them all until one of us wins! This is a great, informative video
@ChrisLascari it's only been two months and we have kids to raise! The debate is a slow burn. But also, there was a problem and I had to tesr down and animal shelter. So we remain at an impasse, at least until the shelter is rebuilt, and the animals no longer sleep on the porch!
On our little ranch, we want whatever we will eat on the hoof... nature food storage. Having pets enters it not at all. So itall comes down to what do you want to eat most? That's your answer.

I've watched "JUST A few acres" and "tyler ranch". Each one was ridofpigs due to feed cost and overall gain$$ was low. But aftr 1-2yrs they chngd&invested in boars and females to help stock up and sell for breedng..I thnk.
@@marshallsayre58 It definitely changes things up when you are farrowing your own piglets. 10 piglets is about the point where it goes either way whether you farrow your own or buy feeders. It's not a huge money maker... But Just A Few Acres Farm makes WAYYYYYY more from YT then they do from their farm.

We are currently located in New York City and need to find out the legalities, however, plan to retire a small farm/Homestead where I can have some hogs chickens and maybe goats as well as plant my own vegetables to keep busy.. picking up our first pigs in the next week or so (berkshire).. just working on getting everything setup before we get em.. we've already got electric for our goats, so we'll just jump off of that for the pigs. My family owns a restaurant, so we'll be getting lots of lovely scraps for the pigs!

I was scared of taking the jump to keep pigs but now at 72 years f age I am going to build a 16ft x 16 ft pen and buy a couple of pigs to go in it. I already have a rooster and his hareem of 10 chickens so adding a couple of pigs to my property should work out OK. Again, you made a fantastic video. This is great information. I love that you included clips of what other farmers do. Do you have a video that goes into detail once you put the pigs in the forest? Like how much space you give them per pig & if you rotate you do rational grazing & how long they stay in one place? I watched one video where the farmer had polywire enclosing a large area in the woods (maybe an acre or more) & just moved their water & feed around the area instead of creating multiple paddocks. What are your thoughts on that? We are looking at getting up to 5 pigs. My husband works 50 hrs a week so I need things to be low maintenance and maneageable.
Hey, one large pen and moving the feed is definitely a good idea for low maintenance. Did you go for that in the end? We tend to fence off areas and rotate the pig as it can be very wet here are the land needs some time off when the pigs have been on during the colder months.

I taught my 320lbs boar a bunch of tricks with a hole winters worth of work, I didn't get him young unfortunately. It's extremely fun bringing friends over who don't know about pigs or maybe haven't seen a friendly one, the big boy will give his belly and follow you around like a puppy. He's also protective of his favorite people the same way he is with his ladies. When my dad got a large dog it was HELL on earth for the first two days, after I sat with the boar and the dog and fed them both for two days though it worked out. For those who don't know, a pig can kill a damn black bear. Or a cow. They are war machines, I'm thankful they are not human hunters by nature lol.
Just bought a 161 acre farm/ farmhouse. Cant wait to move in soon. We’re bringing our 100+ poultry, 2 goats and 1 sheep. Def want to get pigs when we get set up. We do want to pasture graze our pigs. We have a 5 acre, page fenced, treed paddock to use for them. Shall we use the wagon wheel method of grazing? We’re in north western canada. Snow 6-7 months of the year with temps as low as -40/50 some days. So glad to have found this channel
Me and the fiancée started with 8 Potbellys and its been something. I had to catch and hog tie 6 that escaped. We're about to build a new pen but are dumbing down to 4. We're raising half for food and half for the kids to learn about.

Getting my first pig this year. Never done any type of homesteading but am stoked about the idea, learning opportunity, and protein that will come from it at harvest. What's a mistake you see a lot of beginners make that you wish you could have warned them against when it comes to raising their first pig?
Biggest mistake I see if first time pig owners getting caught up in niche breeds like Kune Kune, Mangalitsa, IPP, etc. Look for some of the more common breeds, or crosses of those breeds to start. Yorkshire, Duroc, Berkshire, Tamworth, and others. The other is fencing and fence training. Make sure they have a solid pen to start with electric on the inside and hog panels on the outside. I like that you let your pigs out into the woods. I was wondering if you or anyone who might read this knows of a pig that would be suited to south texas, hardiness zone 9b, hot and dry or hot and humid most of the year.
Most pigs should be good with the heat as long as they have a mud wallow to cool off in and shade to get out of the sun. Buying your stock from a local breeder who’s animals are used to the local climate is your best bet.
Coming from a homestead in Maine, on 2.7 acres, hope all is well with you and your family. We have recently settled on trying to have a go at pigs. We have managed to keep 4 chickens alive for over a year. It has been terrific having our own eggs, can't bring ourselves to eat the birds yet, kinda attached lol. I started chickens last march! I know....in my county pultry is not farm animals so my HOA wouldnt be able to say anything. but pigs would be a no-go! but our goal is to move to more land with no HOA

I grew up in a small village of say 100 families and we all had pigs, chickens, and a garden.
I have a small 20x40 garden 6 ducks 🦆 and 12 chickens 🐓. But I want pigs 🐷 and turkeys 🦃 and cows 🐄 would be nice.

The general tip I've always seen - both in books and online - is, if you raise three pigs, the two you sell will pay for the one you eat yourself.

Getting my first pig this year. Never done any type of homesteading but am stoked about the idea, learning opportunity, and protein that will come from it at harvest.
What's a mistake you see a lot of beginners make that you wish you could have warned them against when it comes to raising their first pig?
Biggest mistake I see if first time pig owners getting caught up in niche breeds like Kune Kune, Mangalitsa, IPP, etc. Look for some of the more common breeds, or crosses of those breeds to start. Yorkshire, Duroc, Berkshire, Tamworth, and others.
The other is fencing and fence training. Make sure they have a solid pen to start with electric on the inside and hog panels on the outside. I like that you let your pigs out into the woods. I was wondering if you or anyone who might read this knows of a pig that would be suited to south texas, hardiness zone 9b, hot and dry or hot and humid most of the year.
Most pigs should be good with the heat as long as they have a mud wallow to cool off in and shade to get out of the sun. Buying your stock from a local breeder who’s animals are used to the local climate is your best bet.

Coming from a homestead in Maine, on 2.7 acres, hope all is well with you and your family. We have recently settled on trying to have a go at pigs. We have managed to keep 4 chickens alive for over a year. It has been terrific having our own eggs, can't bring ourselves to eat the birds yet, kinda attached lol. Your video was a deciding watch to go with pigs. We will also follow along with your recommendation to use the Purina feed. Good luck to you and wish you all the best.

I started chickens last march! I know....in my county pultry is not farm animals so my HOA wouldnt be able to say anything. but pigs would be a no-go! but our goal is to move to more land with no HOA
