    I think you’ve stated some very good reasons for not having a guide dog. It’s sad that some people deny services to service dog owners. That being said the fake service animal owners are giving the real owners a bad name. I also really don’t get why there’s a debate about canes vs guide dogs in the first place.

    • @CaylawithaC
      @CaylawithaC  5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      JC5 Productions yes, people with fake service animals are really causing problems for people who have real ones. And I agree, I don’t know why it has to be a debate between canes or guide dogs. People should just use what works best for them

      Agree. My state allows dogs in training to have the same access rights and I still refuse to bring my SDiT until she is ready. Yet people with completely untrained dogs think it's fine to take those dogs everywhere..

      A friend told me at church when they flew to another state, they took their dog saying that it was an emotional support dog. I was flabbergasted. And mad.

    From a guide dog user, i want to say thank you. Your reasons are very valid and honest. Having a guide dog is a lifestyle not just a addition to your life. Many people, including blind individuals feel every person should have a guide dog or that being blind makes yiu entitled to one. Lots of money goes into these dogs and there is a reason yiu have to have a certain lifestyle to have one. My life has completely changed after getting my girl. And that wrist/hand strain is so real.

      Cayla with a C of course, i cant say for all, but from what i see... guide dog users know what it takes to get a guide, keep them healthy, and the hard work that goes into them. I think it is people not in the guide dog community who don’t see it. People think.. oh your blind.. you automatically get a dog. But it is so much more... the schools look at your mobility, life style, vision, and needs. Then base it off of that. And working a guide dog is not easy for the first year... and people also assume they are robots. I would never go back to being a cane only user, but that is for me... and a choice.

    Hi:
    I just stumbled upon your channel and watched this video. You make valid points and I hope others see these points that I will add:
    1: It doesn't matter what mobility tool one uses--whether it be a guide dog or a white cane. Both are tools that enable a person who is blind to get from point A to point B to point Z. It is the human who makes the difference, not the tool. I have had five guide dogs and I acknowledge the wonderful things each dog has done for me. But ultimately, I'm the one who is always in charge of where I want to go. But in the context of travel, a dog is a mobility tool, not a cutesy animal to be fawned over, nor is it there to be the guardian angel who takes care of its poor helpless blind handler. Good travel skills don't come from a dog or a cane, they come from the human. Practice practice practice to gain them.
    2: Just like people who burn out early or who can't take the pressure of a job, a guide dog can retire prematurely due to a number of reasons. This can be emotionally costly for the handler.
    I'm currently in between dogs and although I'm pretty sure I'll get a successor eventually, I gotta say that I appreciate all the tactile feedback I get using my cane.

    I definitely understand. My dog is a certified service dog and I’ve been questioned multiple times by stores, banks, and the courthouse. In PA they must be recertified every 2 years. He is 20 years old now so I use my cane almost every time.

  • @vigal79
    @vigal79 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Having a guide dog isn’t for everybody. But a couple things I want to share, is that you’re not necessarily taking a guy dog away from somebody else just because you don’t want one. There are a number of schools around the country and they are really good at producing quality guide dogs.
    You are correct in that Uber and Lyft deny service I myself have dealt with this over the years with my current dog. With my first dog Uber and Lyft really weren’t around then.
    However, I live in a pretty major city in the United States, and I’ve never been denied access in a restaurant bar or any other kind of public venue. Never happens. Not a store not a restaurant not any kind of event. Nothing.
    Also, a lot of the schools are turning out smaller dogs these days. In fact, my best friend is owner training her own guide dog. Because, she is so frustrated with the schools turning out smaller dogs. My current dog is only about 40 pounds. And I am 5 foot four. She’s pretty tiny.
    As one of the other comments read, having a guide dog is a lifestyle you’re correct, you can’t just fold your dog up when you get home and throw in a corner. For me, I live alone and I love the companionship of having a dog. Also, I feel that it does give me more independence went out and about in the community. I like the fact, that my dog can judge things in the environment and make decisions to walk around objects and obstacles and construction.
    Last but not least, she can judge traffic and hopefully save my ass from a car coming. That intelligent disobedience thing ha ha smile.

    Hi Kayla. Great video. I am a prospective guide dog user but I too am going to wait to apply for a good while yet for many of the same reasons you expressed. Primarily because I do not do a lot of independent travel as well, and like you said I feel like it wouldn’t be fair to take the Guide Dog away from someone else who does.

    Hi Kayla, you bring up some very good points in this video and this comment comes from a guide dog users. I used a cane for 10 years, with no functional mobility vision, before I was ready to apply for a guide dog. I had many of the same reasons that you have expressed: including the fact that you do not have to feed or water or walk or groom a cane LOL. I have the same I condition as you, retinitis pigmentosa which is reversed, called cone rod dystrophy. So, I haven’t had functional vision since approximately 2002, three. I just got my first guy dog however in 2017 at the saying I. I felt it would be much like having small children again and I wasn’t ready for the hat until just last year, long after my two daughters have been grown and out of the house. So your reasonings make very much sense to me. I, however love my guy dog Gretchen and she has enhanced my mobility, tremendously. Thanks for this informative video which will I am sure, create good conversation among our people. LOL.

      I'd be scared to put all my trust and faith in a guide dog. Even though they cross the street perfectly and instead of having to wait on help with every little thing like finding a bathroom, you could just say to the dog take me to the bathroom and the dog will.
      It's a tremendous amount of responsibility though.
      😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
      Dogs are cuddly cute and they can get you where you want to go. Even though they're a lot of responsibility.

And, the reality is that's ok. There's nothing wrong with saying you'd rather just use your cane for whatever reason. Now, not liking big dogs is a whole other thing! lol...just kidding...keep up the great work!

    I didn't know that discriminations against guide dogs still exist in the US, since guide dogs are very popular there. In the Philippines, we have no guide dogs, so all blind people here just use white canes. But I wouldn't probably consider getting a guide dog even if it's allowed, because I am not really in to animals.

    I know it’s a video that was made quite a while ago, I’m legally blind as well, and I can’t get a guide dog because I live in a flat that’s too small. The thing is, I think you should check out electronic canes, which CAN detect low hanging branches and things above the waist

    Hi what do you think of having different colored Cain’s or decorating your cain?
    Also, there’s more responsibility and paperwork with a guide dog that you have to consider when you’re travelling abroad which could be another factor that someone mightn’t want to get a guide dog

    I've never had a dog either & I refuse to use a cane - I'd rather fall. I have some blurry peripheral vision & I just pretend to see, I figure when I trip ppl figure I'm drunk, high or clumsy - better than a good victim. There are several reasons I don't have a dog. I know a few ppl with dogs & they are a lot of work, if ur out every day that may be a good option but for those of us that are rarely out it's better to save them for those who really need/want them. It's $$$ 30 to 60k & now you have to beg charities for them. They are high maintenance, they need to get a mile or 2 in per day and should each special food etc like they did when they were gov't property. Also allergic to dogs so no pets - had them & was miserable for more than 20 yrs. As far as fake service dogs - the fine needs to jacked up & we need a chipped dog ID to hand over like a personal ID. If u don't have an ID not a legit dog. As for comfort animals - get some therapy and drugs - if you can't fly without a peacock or an iguana, take a bus and a valium

    • @CaylawithaC
      @CaylawithaC  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      TexasTrainer I totally agree with you about dogs being high maintenance and not a good fit for people who aren’t out every day. I also agree with you that there needs to be a bigger fine for fake service dogs
