I don't care that it's 8% on Rotten Tomatoes, I don't care about the cheese factor, I find it to be truly epic and I love it. I'm just glad someone is reacting to it.

The only thing I remember about this film decades later are the scenes with Tom Petty and the old man talking about Saigon. Tom Petty was cool cause in a post apocalyptic world you know a celebrity or two will make it. So it was kinda cool to see Petty running a town. I also like the the old man talking about Vietnam cause one day (which is now) the Vietnam War would be very distant memory.

This movie is good sci-fi, but I'm a big fan of the book's author, David Brin. And the movie actually has some strengths the book lacks, though the book is predictably richer in detail.
I live in Oregon and this movie, Fire in the Sky, and The Goonies all get heavy rotation in local programming here.
And there's something about post offices and libraries that speak to the highest level of civilization to me, make me proud in deeply emotional ways, almost like churches. I draw the line when they come for the post offices or libraries.

The film is not perfect by any means. The acting is a little wooden and the story could have been fleshed out better. Still, it's no where near as bad as half the movies people get a semi over. It's often viewed in an almost infantile way, but at least it's watched.

Not a great movie, but an interesting concept and still way better than all the garbage the theaters are pumping out nowadays. Mail would mean a whole lot more to you, when you consider it's replacing your youtube channel, e-mail, text messaging, phone calls , etc. It would be your only antidote to boredom and a basis for rebuilding civilization. Much more interesting than that Furiosa, I just saw. A million times more entertaining than that Oppenheimer, I couldn't even get through (didn't that win awards or something??). Bring on the sequel! "The UPS Man"

I've never been so disappointed in a reaction of you guys. It sounds like your just hating on this movie to hate on it.
It's your standard post apocalyptic movie. Is it perfect no. But the story is there if you pay attention. It wasn't Kevin's best performance I agree. But Will Patton was amazing in this film. This is a simple story about how one person can inspire hope and change in the midst of despair. The slow mo letter scene I've always took to mean that that one moment changed that boys life and possible the postman 2 where he actually started taking himself seriously instead of being a con man. Like I've said there's a good story here I love this film. I can understand some of your criticism hell I've probably made then 2 but overall thus film gets a lot of hate where it's not warranted honestly. Love your reactions overall but this one missed with me. No hate from my end just my 2 cents.

No hate. This movie was poorly executed. It has the makings of a great movie but it ended up being silly. I understand that many people enjoyed this, but there are much better movies out there that tackle the post apocalyptic scene much better and with a smaller budget. This movie is no good. I'm sure the book is a lot better

As a european I have no attachment to US cheesiness and I do not get most references. Maybe that is why I have no problem perceiving the actual story of this movie and character development of the characters. The scenes I remember from this movie years later is the riding scene that they turned into statue because he decided to take being a postman seriously, not conn people by being The Postman. Second is when he turns Holm nonsense on them to stop them by their own means and third, the most important for me is when the main character reacts to changed oath. It is about people rebuilding after whatever horrific thing they go trough and anyone can become better than they are if they try, because real change comes from smallest things and you never know how something you do outgrows you. The character of general understood this, which is why he was so upset with communication between settlements being reestablished despite his subordinates not getting what the big deal was. Yes the movie is goofy, because the characters are caricatures yet at the same time take themselves seriously and that is a big part why it works for me.

    • @spacedinosaur8733
      @spacedinosaur8733 หลายเดือนก่อน

In the book he doesn't defeat Holm? (first generation cybernetic super-solider) himself, he does the harder job of convincing the mayor of Bridge-city (second generation cybernetic super-solider) to fight and defeat him.

I read David Brin's book before I saw the movie, so I had high hopes for it. Kevin Costner's take on this "conman poses as a USPS letter carrier" was...disappointing. Author David Brin approved the way "The Postman" resolved the battle between the survivalist Holnist militia and his express mail riders, but I ignore the over-long Winter thing. Nevertheless, rebuilding civilization one letter at a time is/was encouraging: th-cam.com/video/8RHHPJweeuw/w-d-xo.html BTW, I preferred "Gordon Krantz" to Cosntner's nameless drifter 6:20 They are followers of Nathan Holn, a nutcase survivalist militia organizer. I found it weird that this rough crew liked "The Sound of Music" movie!? 25:30 Are you thinking of this song?: th-cam.com/video/nvlTJrNJ5lA/w-d-xo.html

I think the 8% on Rotten Tomatoes skewed your reaction. I saw this in the theater when it came out and the general consensus was it was 'ok'. A little trivia... according to the series "Movies That Made Us", Robert Zemeckis and his producers were going to helm the film but Costner (fresh off the success of "Dances with Wolves") decided he wanted it. Pity. "The Postman" had been my favorite novel for years. Lucky for Zemeckis and his producers, they found another script gathering dust called "Forrest Gump"!

My favorite part actually is when the Postman decides to fight and rides in with his army.

Since I'm not from the US, what you guys see as cheese is entirely invisible to me because of the different cultural background. As such while you get hung up on cameos and whatever you find to be cheesy, I get into the world building and the post-collapse civilization and the story of rebuilding.
I generally like the reactions on this channel, but this time around nobody took the time to get into any of it, and it shows on the reaction.
This is the situaiton where watching alone would have resulted with an entirely different viewing experience.

This film gets an awful lot of criticism but I have something of a soft spot for it. I like the overall ideas of this film but yes it gets buried in some of the bad acting and overall cheesiness. I think if this was being made today the film makers would have more courage to make the world considerably darker and that would play well into the themes of the movie but it can't be "The Road" - it would have to have more hope than that. Overall, I think it's a film that was made in the wrong era.

So this inspired me to seek out the book I'm listening to the audio book right now.... so far it is fantastic. It was written as sort of a counterpoint to Mad Max yes you have the main character who is the hero but really what Saves the world is making the spark that reminds people that they can be better and then they can build something resembling if not better than what came before. Inspire people to build something larger than themselves is the message.

@RKnights I've never been to film school, so I'm not qualified to comment on if it checked all the filmmaker community's boxes. The monkey man movie that just came out really sucked and I'm sure qualified filmmakers would give it an Oscar. All I can say is that the postman "did" it for me, and that's what I thought movies are all about.
