End of the Road | LDV Convoy Retirement

  • After three action-packed voyages across continental Europe spanning 28 countries, battling the extreme winter elements over the toughest terrains European soil could throw at us and our van, it's all finally come to an end.
    Our six-wheeled humble abode of the last five years failed its MOT back in November so badly that we simply had to call it a day. No surprise to many, our LDV Convoy is well-beaten and it certainly shows. We've covered 47,000 miles with 13 breakdowns and around £6,000 in repairs during our time on the road.
    But fear not! This is by no means the end of the road for us. When we built our Convoy home back in 2016, we had sunny France, Spain and Portugal in mind. We've since discovered a love for wilder countries and colder climates so our next van will be adapted and kitted out to better suit our needs.
    So stick with us guys, we promise our next adventures will be crazier, colder, and further out in the wilderness than ever before.

    Guys, your van is actually repairable. Buy yourselves a little MIG welder and you'll be amazed at how little it actually costs to do all that. Many, many hours. Well, days. Okay, weeks. Spend time, not money. I've lost track of how many weeks solid I've spent welding LDV Convoys!! Sheet metal is cheap, welding comes with practice and if that was my van with all the sentimental memories attached, I'd go for it! Have a look at the little Hyundai inverter MIG welders, really nice machines and very well priced. Hope you're both good :-) Take care. Rich.

    My father inlaw worked at LDV factory untill he retired in 2005 and the factory closed. I know they were never the most reliable van they were let down by lack of investment by the 3 men and an overdraft and the previous owners. When we used to go on holiday we used to play spot the Sherpa . My father inlaw used to put the roofs on. He is now in a care home with dementia sadly he will never understand your channel to appreciate where you took your van but I think he would have been very proud. Well done to you both and good luck with rest of your future travels.

      Wow what a lovely, interesting and sad comment! Such an interesting history, those Sherpas are rare these days but we'd love to get our hands on one, and finding someone with knowledge about them is even rarer it seems! Best wishes to you and your father in-law ❤️

    I had a LDV Convoy done thousands of miles very slowly across europe, mostly Germany and Poland. Biggest problem? Water coming through wiper spindles making cab floor rot out because of sound deadening under rubber mat holding the moisture. Keep yours as a Shephard's Hut as long as you can while its still livable, sell axles etc to get some cash back when the time comes to part with it.

End if an era. But it's the most amazing way to travel and see europe. I think the MOT chap did you a favour. From looking at the video there's rust everywhere, and, on top of the mechanical problems that you know about, is the fact that things just eventually wear out. I'm a huge opponent of a throwaway culture but sometimes calling it a day is by far the most rational solution.
    It's served you better than well, but in the final event it's an inanimate tool and IMO you could spend your money on better things.
    Obviously it's your van so do as you choose.
    I've had enough of this rain. 12 noon and it's barely daylight. Cornwall in winter.....
    However....spring is getting ever closer.

    • @FromRustToRoadtrip
      @FromRustToRoadtrip  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah you’re right there! We’ve repaired this van countless times, long after it became not financially viable to do so. But the memories it’s given us are priceless! Everything’s repairable at the end of the day, it just depends how much you want to spend... 😂
      Can’t believe the rest of the country has snow and here we are with mizzle 😫

  • @lettersquash
    @lettersquash 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Ahhh, that's sad. Scary too, as I've got one a couple of years older and I can now see the future too clearly! I'm amazed looking at the rust underneath it that you got it through the last two MOTs. Ours was already converted and embarrassingly expensive when we got it (about the same time as you got yours), and then we found the lake under the cab floor and had to strip it out. Took a few goes to work out where the leaks were, but (fingers crossed) it's now pretty dry. Not been anywhere as challenging as you, but maybe after all this Craziness is over we will. Love the video, well done.

    • @FromRustToRoadtrip
      @FromRustToRoadtrip  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! If you don’t take your van on such salty wintry roads as we did it’ll probably last a bit longer 🙏 Would love to know how you fixed your leak- in 5 years we still haven’t worked it out 😂

    • @lettersquash
      @lettersquash 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@FromRustToRoadtrip After trying what most people said - windscreen seal, wiper mounts - it was still coming in somewhere. I finally tracked down this site vandogtraveller.com/fix-water-leak-in-ldv-convoy-van/ and that was the solution. It's the back corners of the guttering around the engine compartment, where two or three panels join. The gutters get clogged, water sits there and rots through and comes out behind the dash. I modified the gutters, adding drainage tubes in the back (because I park it on a slope so it doesn't drain all the rain out the front as designed) and also little additions to the front to direct water over the headlights rather than down inside the back of them! Sorry it's too late for yours, and all the best with your new project!

      @@FromRustToRoadtrip My dad used to sell them! We used one to move house in 1987 when I was six, that was a Freight Rover 400 I think (the bigger one, not the sherpa derived 200). They used landrover engines were are pretty bomb proof, they just (very slowly) chug on forever. You don't see many around now, but you don't see many 30+ year old vehicles I guess. They are basically the same as your ldv so far as the body goes I think.

      That's great to know! From what we've read they seem to be super simple to fix, plus they look awesome. If we got one it would certainly be with a Land Rover engine and gearbox, or a swap. We'd love one of those rare 4WD ones but they're even rarer on the roads these days...

    My late Godfather ran a back street garage in Liverpool and priced every job in 'sheets'. A sheet being a pound note. 'Call it twenty sheets'. A bigger job would be fifty sheets and a really big job like an engine out might be a hundred sheets. I think your van might just be in the 100 sheets category!
    I've taken my van off the road for now. Last year was a disaster for van touring and when the MOT and tax was due at the end of the year I sorned it. I'm not that confident that things will be a whole lot better in 2021?

    • @FromRustToRoadtrip
      @FromRustToRoadtrip  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Haha that’s a great story! Probably quite a few stacks of sheets for this old van 😂
      We’re not confident 2021 will be much better for travel, certainly not internationally anyway, so we’re hanging back until 2022 before our next trip to be on the safe side. There’s all sort of vaccinations and quarantines to sort out for travel atm so it seems like too much of an expensive headache to us right now 😅

    Anyways onto LDV's I got one too, and its a Camper. It was about to be condemned this year when it failed its MOT but I'm currently resurrecting it from the LDV graveyard back into surplus with lots of good tasty welding ( arc to those who know ). So dont give up ! Footnote:: Always afraid of a breakdown with my old un going to Europe but you have given me hope to take that chance when its back on the road again. ;) Yes Deffo get a welder, thats what I did - no lookin back. I also had a leak in my roof, after I removed the small SAT Dish that previous owner had put on. I used a transparent perspexy bowl lid from B&M to cover it with copious amounts of gorrilla outdoor grab stuff to secure - perfect and no leaks now. Yeah; Engines a cracker - Bannana I think, they just keep on goin. Struggle up hills though.

    Rust is the van killer. Its like cancer and not many vans make it past 20 years. Some die at 15 unless you get under the van every year and treat/ repair everything that looks suspect. Between 15 and 20 years if it not rust is major engine failure. Broken timing belts, dropped chains and seized water/oil pumps quite often ends as catastrophic death for the engine.
