So glad I found your videos. I have been looking for someone who turned an entire chess set. Thank you so much.. Your work is beautiful.

I've tried making a Knight. Rather than make it out of one piece, I cut the horse head out of a rectangular blank on the scroll saw. I first cut out the profile of the horse head, and reattached the two slices of wood that I removed using double sided scotch tape. I then cut out the obverse image, and removed the excess wood. This left a rough carving of the horse head, and then i finished carving it with both hand tools and a Dremel. I then turned the base of the piece and glued the two together with a dowel in the joint.
It's also possible to turn the horse heads as a bowl, with the front of the head on the inside surface of the bowl, and the back of the head on the outside. Then you cut out slices of the bowl for each of the heads, and again finish with hand tools or a Dremel to add the final touches. A separate base is again turned and the two parts are glued together.
You can make the Knight in one piece as you did, but out of a round stock. Hold the dowel in a wood compression clamp to make the saw cuts.

hey there! you made a great figure, but I'm interested in how the head with the drill is fixed.. I have the same small lathe and everything is very similar to yours, but I want to make a drill head like the one you used when drilling the hole.. I saw that the part that goes in is in a cone.. but how is it secured so that it does not rotate while drilling the hole?

Thanks for your comment. Wood is maple for white pieces and east indian rosewood for black.

    Hi !
How do you re-put the knight on the lathe, just after cut it with bandsaw ?
Tu l'enfonces "à serrage" sur un "mandrin" en bois ?

I used a special jig to screw the piece. Watch my pawn video, I explain it.
