  • This is the first part of Susan Garrett's "Crate Games". The game was create to help encourage a dog's impulse control while, later, building drive in and out of the crate. This was Zelda's first attempt and the game and although she seems a bit worried, I knew she would learn the game quickly. The 1st session took about 15 minutes to complete. I will post a couple followup videos to show her progress - you will see her confidence grow as time goes by :) See you next time!

This video series is better than the actual "Crate Games" DVD! The explanations are detailed enough to help me understand the method and purpose. I also really appreciate that all the small increments are actually shown (rather than skipping to the finished behavior), so that I can see the progression of puppy learning.

Yes, I AGREE!!! LOL. I have Susan's Crate Games DVD and I have to say I enjoyed watching this more. Could the fact that I have a greyhound have any thing to do with it... well maybe. LOL. Thanks for sharing your awesome training video with us.

Continued from previous reply - and second, that by physically getting in the dog space you help get them in the back and the sit. Many who have tried skipping this step have gotten dogs that turn to the back or look to the side of the crate - the purpose is to sit straight so that when you are ready to play the advanced crate games, they will be facing the correct direction :) In other words - facing toward the exit of the crate. Hope this helps :) Debby

Hand on the crate door is going to be a cue for 'sit' (when door is closed). Open the door when dog sits ( thus not the other way around) and reward high at the back while dog sits..

I thought a really good helpful video showing all from start to finish and how to manage those initial tricky learning curves for the dog!

Yes, you can feed through the wire, but Susan Garrett's video does address the reprocussions - The video shows you can do this later in the game - but not at the start. Reason: first the opening of the crate door (actually the sound of the latch) is supposed to trigger the dog into the sit. By opening the door and reaching far in the back to feed you are doing 2 things: Teaching them to resist the urge to break out and - continued in next reply-

i got my 11 week old dog to figure out crate games in a matter of minutes. I think if a pup has experience with shaping and its yer choice they can learn it quickly. SG is going to be putting out a shaping course, and in it she shows some easy starter shaping games, like step on a board, get a treat (drop treat on board) dog learns to step on the board -- they learn to offer behavior for reward (toy or food)

My puppy is 8 weeks old. I know you said not to expect them to be able to do this, but am I missing out on valuable training trike that would make achieving those harder if I wait until she is 13/14 weeks?!

Hi, I know this video is pretty old but was wondering if could answer a few questions about CG. My dog doesn't move forward out of the crate when I put the leash on but she does try to get away from it or move further back into the crate. Is this still incorrect? And during Yer Out Yer In when I give her a release she doesn't come out at all, should I also close the door on this?

is there any reason why you could not feed her through the back of the crate rather then reach in ( as it is a wire crate) to help her sit further back in the crate ??

I have found value is determined by the dog. my dogs go nuts for Cheerios and oyster crackers. they prefer them to sort foods.

Depends on the dog. I used to work for a board and train facility and we would buy hot dogs if a dog wouldn't work for any of our normal treats. We microwaved them and it worked for several dogs. Some others preferred Goldfish.
