I worked on a building site on Brighton Marina summer of '87 and for a few days during that time Rowan Atkinson was filming an advert near the beach. I saw him several times driving his burgundy 6.9. I remember drooling at the vehicle and oggling at the star!

Always wanted to own and experience this amazing sedan but there were not many available a few years ago. Also by then most of them needed work, they were very expensive to repair and maintain and finding someone competent to work on the cars very difficult. So I ended up buying a excellent 560 SEL that I enjoyed for several trouble free years. Though it lacked the power of the 6.9 and was heavier at about 4,950 lbs. ? It was quite quick , and a few times I had it up to 135 MPH and still had some pedal left. And of course unlike the 6.9 it was well equipped with standard luxury's like electric windows, sunroof, adjustable electrical heated seats both front and rear, thick leather and beautiful woods. I really miss that car and one can still find them in good condition for just a few thousand dollars. Nice review regards, Phil Massie

My dad had a 1979. I let my friend drive it and he did a block long burnout.

I have one of these. If the suspension is working properly that suspension light shouldn't be on when you turn the ignition on, it indicates low pressure. Mine only comes on if left sat for a few months (suspension still stays up) and goes out extremely quickly.

thanks; great video! makes me regret again that in geneva, twenty years ago, i met a seller of this car with cash in my pocket to buy it, and walked away on a matter of brake calipers. he was asking 5000 chf...

    Amazing motor car

Beautiful car and the amg version was lightening fast with even more power and over 150mph possible. The torque is 550Nm, which is still well over 400ft lbs but this was a net figure, so the 549ftlb you quote was probably the gross figure. Lauched probably not the best time, however no other company had a car that came close. The '69 dodge polara 440 with 375hp gross would have come close in space and performance with a 15s quarter mile and 150mph top speed, but that was no where near as luxurious and was killed off well before 1975.

I can't believe this is a 1981 model and therefore 1 of only 4 made. Who knows how many of those are still even left?! This could be the last one ever made and/or left! Is there a 6.9 registry somewhere?

2:37 biggest Mercedes V8 up to that point and it forever will be the biggest Mercedes V8 but far from the biggest by American standards, by the time the 6.9 came out, Cadillac were already using an 8.2 litre V8. The 6.9 was far more powerful though, far quicker and really quite a lot better.

    Hello Simon,
I own one of these here in Sydney, mine is dark blue in colour and is a 79 model sold new here in Australia by Mercedes Benz.
Right hand drive of course, I bought it 35 years ago from a dealer in Melbourne, things were bad in Australia at that time ,the
Dealer shipped the car up to Sydney for me to look at it, if I liked buy it if not send it back. Obviously I bought it.
Why did I want one well At the time I owned a 450 small v8 , I was sitting at a set of lights and dragged by a little Jap ute
That had a 253 Holden v8 fitted in it. I said that won’t do I need something with a bigger engine, then I found out about the 6.9
And the rest is history. PS a few years ago I was visited by one of your own A Dublin man who told he worked in London as
A traffic cop and one he spotted a 6.9 illegally parked, as he was about to book it who should arrive only James Hunt, well he settled
For an autograph and no booking. True story from a Louth man

Awesome engine and design, this behemoth of luxury sedans still kicks ass 40 years on !! The color of this car though, is pretty lame, a metallic blue would be perfect !

It needs 295/50 R15 tires, I had 195s on my 350SE and could barely stop/turn but with the big ones, I could
