  • It is time to take you back down to the Outer banks of North Carolina. We had the opportunity to walk through a county-wide EMS service. Let me tell you that you will not be disappointed to hear how they operate and see what they have in store for the next three years. They are in the beginning stages of building or remodeling at least three stations per year. Chief Collins has her act together with a dual focus on her employees and the community in which they serve. Station 1 is their headquarters, the hub of the entire network. Station 1 houses Dare County EMS's administration, training, supplies, and even units staffed with experts ready to respond to 911 and transport requests.
    One of the most intriguing issues is their geographic location. They are located on the barrier islands of the Atlantic Ocean of North Carolina with only a critical access facility, meaning there is no specialty care services such as heart, stroke, or trauma. Don't get me wrong they have an emergency room but for any major problems for the residents or tourists, they must transport to other facilities, about 2 hours away.
    Whether you are in a 911 system or a transport system this is an outstanding place to work. They truly care about the staff and the skill sets that are needed to work in an area that is this unique.
    Thank you to everyone at Dare County EMS services for the warm hospitality and for allowing the viewers from Heroes Next Door to walk through your station and see all the people behind the scenes. We can't wait to go again and see the progress of the NEW stations as they are built.

    This is awesome, 12 years ago my dad was swimming in the ocean at the outer banks and got pulled under by a riptide and drowned. Dare county EMS showed up and tried to save him, unfortunately he didn't make it, but I was able to turn a tradgedy into something good, I got my EMT at 18, then my AEMT shotly after and been working EMS (now paid fire) ever since. Thank you so much to all the EMTs, AEMTs and Medics at Dare EMS.

      At the risk of nitpicking, though they are the agency tasked with protecting Centennial Airport (APA), SMFR doesn't have a dedicated ARFF station. Red 1 and Red 2 are based out of Station 31 in Centennial and are crossed-staffed by the crew of Tower 35, and Red 3 is stationed at at 44s in Meridian and cross-staffed by Engine 44. Neither station, however, is located on airport property.

    • @franklewis6943
      @franklewis6943 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@HeroesNextDoor Put it off al little bit longer, Mike. I know many of your viewers tune in to check out the apparatus of the departments you feature, and SMFR has quite a few new toys in the works. They spec-ed a Pierce tiller as a multirole apparatus to replace both the tower and HDR at 34s (and you should definitely ask to visit that station), but probably won't be delivered before 2024 due to all the automotive supply chain issues; SVI up in Ft. Collins is building a new haz mat rig on a Frieghtliner chassis to replace the old Spartan/SVI running out of 38s; and both ARFF tenders (Red 1 at 35s and Red 3 at 44s) are being replaced with new Oshkosh Striker 1500s. Eric can give you a better idea when all of these will be hitting the streets but I'm sure your viewers would enjoy seeing them.

      @@HeroesNextDoor Glad to hear that. I was surprised when you essentially glossed right over the fact that a publicly-funded municipal EMS agency operates their own medivac helicopter. I've never heard of such an arrangement before (the closest analogue is some larger fire departments with aviation divisions--Miami-Dade, LA City and County spring to mind--but those are fire, not EMS agencies, and the California departments use their helicopters as much or more for wildfire attack than the medivac/SAR tasks), so surely I'm not the only one whose curiosity was piqued when Chief Collins mentioned it, and it might be the most interesting thing about Dare County EMS. I'm even more curious how their billing for medivac services compares to the same provided by private, for-profit operators. But I don't expect you to answer that question because I have Google and a phone to call the number you provided while chatting with DC Tom Francisco.
      Another great episode, Mile. Keep 'em coming!

    • @PaulCagiano
      @PaulCagiano ปีที่แล้ว

      @@franklewis6943 Dare County first started operating it's own helicopter around 1976. Back then in was part of the Sheriff's department and was for S&R. It was a Bell, with the bubble cockpit. Next it was upgraded to a Vietnam-era Huey (with bullet hole repairs) and began medivac operations since there was no hospital. EMS as a department began around 1980 with full-time staff in 1982. About 1985 Medflight began using a BK-117 and continued until the current Airbus around 2015 (I think). It wasn't until later that the County could start billing for helicopter transports. They didn't fly under FAA Part 105 until then so pay for service wasn't possible. Maybe it's TMI but you seemed interested. I had a photo of the old Huey but I can't find it.

    • @franklewis6943
      @franklewis6943 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PaulCagiano There's no such thing as "TMI". Thanks for the history. It's the funding mechanism that intrigues me here because helicopters aren't cheap to operate, and that a municipal agency found a way is impressive, to say the least. If Dare County EMS has found a billing model that's competitive with private-sector medivac competitors while providing the same services and availability, that should excite everyone who works in the field.
      (Did you accidentally fat-finger a "0" when you wanted a "3" for the FAA rule? It's Part 135 that regulates air ambulances. Don't feel bad; I had to edit this because I fat-fingered the 10-key myself in my original reply to you.)

    Great video. I understand those concerns with the ambulance chassis, but they're probably still overloading an F-450. With the advancement in suspensions, such as four wheel liquid springs and adaptive suspensions, the wind loading, loading height, and ride comfort aren't really an issue anymore. A lot of agencies are going with the Ram chassis which are having better reliability and durability with the Cummins. I've thought about working for Dare, it's a 3 hour drive from hmy house, but it would be more for the experience as the pay in Virginia is somewhat better. They definitely seem like a top notch agency.
