I was at the Rainbow on 31 Dec 1977. I was 12 years old. Johnny struck a crushing A major, Joey shouted "Hey, we're the Ramones, this one's called Rockaway Beeeaach", Dee Dee barked 1,2,3,4 and music, the world and my life were forever changed. They are all now dead, having left behind them a tectonic shift of a legacy. I was lucky enough to befriend them personally and continue to miss them, their music and their feral intensity to this very day.
Man I only heard that from the Ramones Live album. So awesome that you were actually there! I could imagine what you felt when they broke into Rockaway Beach.
It Bites ? You JAMMY fugga !
The man once sold songs to his former band for bail money and recorded a verse over the phone. Dee Dee is forever the gold standard punk bassist
What track is that?
First song is 'Judy Is A Punk' from their first album 'Ramones'. Second one is 'Cretin Hop' from 'Rocket To Russia'.
Last one is 'Blitzkrieg Bop', the iconic Ramones anthem from their first album 'Ramones'
@@rogerboyd8312 I think @krakenturdz asked about what track is the one Dee Dee recorded a verse over the phone.
@@krakenturdz la cancion se llama bornt to die in berlin del album adios amigos donde dee dee canta por telefono en aleman
Dee Dee is the reason I picked up bass. All rhythm, so good.
paul simonon the clash!
his background was so vastly different from his bandmates and he was a groove genius
As a Ramones fan, i can say your Ramones impersonation is perfect
Considering my band had a show last night and we ended our set with Blitzkrieg Bop this was an appropriate video to see, great job man. Anyways here’s a bunch of guys I’d like to see in this series
- Paul McCartney (The Beatles)
- Geddy Lee (Rush)
- Cliff Burton (Metallica)
- Flea (RHCP)
- Lemmy (Motörhead)
- Chris Squire (Yes)
- Les Claypool (Primus)
- Mike Dirnt (Green Day)
- Roger Waters (Pink Floyd)
- Peter Hook (Joy Division/New Order)
- Peter Steele (Type O Negative)
- Paul Grey (Slipknot)
- John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin)
- Krist Novoselic (Nirvana)
- Nate Mendel (Foo Fighters)
- D’Arcy Wretzky (Smashing Pumpkins)
can you add Matt Freeman (Rancid) on the list?
Nice! Now we need Glen Matlock and Paul Simonon to complete the Punk Rock triad lol
Not to mention JJ Burnel (although @dannysapko) has done some of his before.
THANK YOU FOR MAKING SUCH GREAT BEHS VIDEOS YOU INSPIRE ME TO PURSUE THIS INSTRUMENT THAT I NEVER WOULD HAVE CONSIDERED A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO! LEGEND
If you ever do a t shirt with BEHS on it I'm totally buying it !
I don’t even know what day it is anymore Danny I’m going insane please just do Trevor bolder’s bass tone he worked with David Bowie from 1971-1973
Dee Dee was awesome no doubt. Always thought Klaus Flouride from DK never got as much credit as he deserves as a player 👍
Looking forward to future episodes in this series! Please profile Robert DeLeo at some point. So many people forget just how many STP songs were written by him
Love seeing the punk influence in Danny
Dude no joke, your cover is fucking good, i'd listen to an album's worth of that.
Warthog is one of my favorite DE DE songs his vocals on it are the best
No one ever seems to bring up Bruce Foxton of the Jam. He’s one of the best ever!!
👍!
Fuck ya! So down for long form vids! You’re already one of my fave channels. Also Ramones wipes the floor with the Sex Pistols sorry to say, RAMONES ALL THE WAY!!!! 😻😻😻
In another life, I played guitar so I’m adept with a pick but Ramones songs are challenging to play at tempo with all downstrokes. If you’ve never tried it, do it and you’ll know. I personally recommend “Commando” and “Today Your Love, Tomorrow The World”. Great way to start and looking forward to the series!
I would like to see John Paul Jones in next video! Love you’re playing and enthusiasm 💛
This video was awesome! I love your content Danny!
Got to love Legends of Bahs!
Nice cover of Judy is a Punk. It's my Ramones favourite song
You have the dee dee and johnny downstoke mastered to a fine art, excellent man
Can't wait for some more epic bass tales
Can’t wait for John Deacon next! I think he’s such a unique bassist, especially with epic lines such as The Millionaire Waltz ❤❤
Could set a metronome to Deacon and Taylor 👌🏻
When it comes to JD, everyone talks about "The Millionaire Walz", and it's only the opening part where he accompanies the piano line. Above all, the art of pausing, which he mastered so magnificently, should be mentioned. Deacon was also a bassist who used the entire fretboard to create atmosphere with high notes. Last but not least, he was a player who perfectly mastered the "less is more element". Definitely one of the all-time greats on bass!
@@wolfgangmarkusgstrein8522 Spoken like a true musician!!!
I did. It was something your young ears can’t possibly imagine
That statement about four rhythm instruments was spot on 😉
i will be watching every video of this series
You crack me up. Keep at it lad!
I love you BEHS vids!
Great stuff man!
Your next legend of bass video should either be about paul McCartney,John deacon,John Paul jones or John Entwistle
AWESOME!
Day it doesn't matter, I just want Phil Lynott bass tone please
great video! greetings from argentina!!!
Great job! Learning and laughing at the same time!
I'd love to see Simon Gallup! This series or shorts about his tone(s)!
Keep it up! Cheers!
Next should be Carlos Dengler from Interpol
Please do Jerry Only from The Misfits! They were an stripped down punk band like the ramones with all down strokes as well but they really developed their sound into something crushingly diabolical by the time earth ad rolled around
Jerry Nolan called me on the phone said hey is Dee Dee home
Totally loved this episode 😊 Dee Dee will always be king of punk behs.😊
I would love to see Peter Hook, Simon Gallup, or Carlos Dengler
Is it just me or do we need a full version of the song?
Good stuff
Saw them in Asbury park New Jersey Baby!!!!
You should definitely do Peter hook or Simon gallup I would kill for your take on the post punk/ goth bass tones
Wicked video of dee dee. What settings do you use on the tone hammer to get dee dee’s tone. I have the same amp
Aston Family Man Barrett next please
I'd love to see a video about jah wobble. My musical hero
Day five of asking for Dee Dee Ramone’s bass tone, wait…
road to 50k nice. Also what do you think is better a p bass, j bass, stingray, Rickenbacker, or pj?
Les Claypool, John Entwistle and, Peter Steele are my picks!
Dee Dee Ramone ♥️
❤
Great channel dude, Tim commonford RAM...
Dee dee doesn't get mentioned enough in this context, thanks!. The 50s pop, bubblegum influences came from joey the singer. It was bubblegum pop chewed up and spat back out via the rough new york style of the time.

This shit slaps bro!!!
Would love to see Cliff Burton
As a bass player keeping this up for a full set must have been bloody hard work, my wrist is hanging playing just one, if you are playing any Ramones in a band, dont ever, and i mean ever try and wimp out by strumming, someone like me will be there to judge you, you'll know who they are by the knowing smirk, they will know you're a fraud. On a serious note saw the Ramones about 1980 at Lancaster university and it blew my mind forever, if i had one moment in a Delorean it would be to go back to that gig.
one of the greatest punk bassist. nice vid! can you tell us alex james sounds?
If you want to do a bassist who is totally underrated, try Naomi Yang’s work with Galaxie 500
Hi. Whats the brand of strings that you are using on the red p-bass ? Thanks
They're actually the Steve Harris signature set from Rotosound
Please consider doing a video on Andy Rourke or Victoria De Angelis, that is of course if you haven’t already - I’m not sure. Thank you. Love your videos. 🖤
Dee Dee might be one of the most difficult bass player to imitate. All due to his exclusive downstrokes. Sure, you might hold one song, 2 or 3 for the strongest, but a whole gig?
I wanna see the B52'S
1977 - Kate Pierson on
Fender Rhodes
keyboard Bass .
Later on - Sara Lee
Can you do a video about singers that play bass?
Legends of Behs: Alex Webster
Leg -ends of behs
Ray 32 asking for the Elvis tone
Have you done a video on jerry only yet? 🤘🤘
Speaking of The Clash I can’t remember if you’ve done Paul Simionon or not…
It's on my list
@@DannySapkocheers!
Should do a video on bands with more than one legendary bassist, Metallica, King Crimson, Deep Purple, Alice in Chains, are good examples, even The Beatles can kinda count
Vid 37 of asking for Xenon Ishikawa's tone
聖飢魔II
You have fun content man keep it up
Hope ya do Lemmy and Steve Harris eventually
Day 34 of asking for Duff Mckagans bass tone
JJ Burnel 👍
🔥
Like deployed 👍
wow he can play judy is a punk super well
The ramones invented it.....and discharge perfected it.
Do mike watt of the minuitmen
Glenn Cornick RIP from Jethro Tull... he even looked like a 60s you!
Ramones music what John peel played in BBC radio 2 made old people mad like little Richard had done before Ramones. Old people ditched BBC radio 2 and youngster started to listen more and more BBC radio 2.
CRONOS! It seems there are no videos about him (!), which in some ways means he is an uderreated british bassist
Day 3 of asking of Paul Grays Bass Tone
MASHED POTATO!!!
Also, you need a T-shirt that's two sizes too small.
All down strokes 👍
love your videos - but never got the ramones at all - just leave me cold
Matt Freeman, please.
Day 5 of asking for a Danny Sapko 2025 calendar.
PAUL GREY PLEASE
Punk rock IS a throwback to old school rock n roll. Even the Sex Pistols and The Clash have old school rock influences. That was kind of the point. And even if the *fact* that those bands took heavy inspiration from The Ramones wasn't well documented, i don't see how anyone could deny the sound similarities with a straight face. Why are we even still having this conversation? Im pretty sure it boils down to petty national pride and fanboyism.
Because punk in Britain was a social movement, not a musical genre
@@user-sz8lp2tj5x it was both in all areas.
mike dirnt green day
MARTINA WEYMOUTH
Day 4 of asking for Matt Sharps behs tone 😅
Day 65 of asking for Matt Sharp’s bass tone
Yeah! I don't know who Matt is but Dany, get it over with!
Dee Dee played a white Musicmaster most of the time
Day 34 asking for David Hungate's behs tone.
please make longer videos, don't limit yourself to yt shorts
Paul McCartney
Dee Dee is the reason I gave up the bass.
