  • This is a tutorial for firewill's Air Weapon System mod for ArmA 3. For this I used the F-35B Lightning II by firewill, but the video is meant to be useful for all firewill aircraft.

    so im currently in the marines in my A school. im in Aviation ordnance so i basically go to class everyday to learn about these weapons and bombs. and to download a mod and know exactly what all these weapons do (or should do depending on how accurate the mod is) is actually cool. i downloaded Arma because of this too.

    This is easily the best tutorial for the complex Air Weapon System in Arma 3! You even told me things about the unmodded game I didnt know before and - believe me - I have watched A LOT of tutorials.

    So, fun thing about the HARM that you forgot to mention. You don’t actually have to acquire a target. They have LOAL, or Lock On After Launch capabilities. In essence, as long as a radar emitting target is within your cone and had its radar on, and you are within the 1-16km window, you can just yeet a HARM and it will acquire lock midflight.

      Yeah to be fair the mechanics of the HARM have changed a fair bit over time due to new engine side features being implemented with jets DLC and following updates. But if that's how they work now then great - even more fool proof :D

    Thank you so much for the video, I taught myself a lot of what you talked about but the I-TGT system, I usually fly with mouse and keyboard but I'm thinking of getting a joystick. And I've been wanting to do CAS or CAP missions on servers but I havent found any decent servers like this any recommendations?

      Glad you liked the video. The problem is that as far as I know, firewills mod is not designed to work with HOTAS so it's hard to set up controls to use the I-TGT with joystick. If that's something you're interested in, I recommend checking out the "ITC Air Systems" mod, you can get that on the workshop. It's an alternative air weapon system that is more sophisticated and designed to work with HOTAS. I've been wanting to do a video on that too but couldn't find the time to familiarise myself with it enough yet.
      Regarding servers, sadly I don't know of any servers where you can easily fly CAS and CAP. I fly on the public server of my unit but it's an infantry focused group with little opportunity to fly so if you're only interested in flying then you won't be satisfied there. Otherwise you're welcome to check out our website, link in the description. ;)

    Hey man your tutorial has been perfect and has really allowed me to understand all the weaponry involved on typically the A-10 from your previous videos, however I have one question: "How do you swap firing modes from a 'single' to a 'burst 1' it's happened a couple of times but I'm unsure as of how I did it, pressing F only swaps the weapons around, cheers!

      If there are any fire modes for the gun that are not accessible via pressing F, I am unaware of them. Are you sure they exist in this mod?

      @@David-ft5mr I'm not sure myself, one minute it says "Single" underneath the weapon slotted, then once or twice I've looked back over and it's said "burst 1" so I'm honestly not sure lol

      @@squishytoons6730 you are talking about the flares/chaff, to switch between the amount of flares you drop press Ctrl + c and there will be multiple options like single flare, burst 1 , burst 2, 4/16s etc it's useful if you are low on flares or if you are deploying them against manpads

    So active radar is not needed for araam 120? Thank you for putting this much time in a tutorial. Do you know any fun servers or groups to play with that use these mods aswell?

      Should not be required, no. The missile has a radar seeker inside its tip.

    Can you explain how to use the KGGB GPS guided bomb?i ve seen in virtual arsenal that there is a PDU under the GPS but i cant open it either with ACE3...thanks PS there are some airplane and UAV that don t have I-TGP feature so i can t designate TGT

    how do the EO bombs on the SU-25MS work? the KAB-500Kr, I tried locking onto the target, lasing, and just putting the camera over it, it does not seem to guide in, nor am I getting a lockbox.

      The map is Tanoa, the Carrier is added by the "Nimitz" mod and the helicopters are CH-53's from RHS USAF. I hope that answers your questions ;)

    Hi! Tnx for the video! I have 3 questions:
    1) while using GPS mode, how do I know if I am actually in range?
    2) (Partially related to #1)can you tell me what is the "cone of view" of SDB's sensor?
    3) You already answered in the video but I'd like to be sure. So, how SDB prioritizes in dual mode: #1 radar #2 Laser # pre-planned GPS. Is it correct?

      Regarding 1, I think as far as you can align CCIP with your target, the bomb will reach the target.

      Hey, glad the vid was useful.
      Scripting for Zeus controlled units is very tricky so I can imagine it just doesn't work for those by default. I think the only way is to maybe ask Firewill himself, he might know a way e.g. a command that you can execute in the console or something

    ironically the meteor was the most advanced A2A missile by far when you made the video and even now its still the top performing A2A missile.
    the reason only the swedish airforce was using it at the time was because its a join development between swedish and british company and the JAS platform was used for testing and sweden was quicker to upgrade their aircraft to be compatible. the meteor is intended to be used by a lot of countries.

      Interesting piece or trivia. Yeah I read that it was pretty high tech stuff but didn't dig into why it's only so rarely used. Let's see whether more will deploy it in the future :)

      It’s now also used on the Eurofighter by the UK and Germany. The Meteor is different because it uses a Ramjet propulsion system, which leads to it having thrust for, depending on the flight time, possibly it’s entire flight. this makes evading the missile MUCH harder

    I have one wish for 2020; dear firewill, please make the I-TGT exportable to a second monitor/screen. I’d love to convert a cougar MFD with TFT screen to do my targeting while flying.

      The mission was just something I put together in the editor, nothing official or fancy :)

    I was having trouble operating the Mavericks, I spawned in tanks with zues and locked onto them with the TGP, only to not be able to get a full lock on. My suspicion is that the vehicle is not hot enough to lock onto, so should I try the AGM-65L maverick so that it doesn't matter how hot they are, as long as the laser is on it, it should work. The other thing I wanted to know is, is there any mods that would interfere with the way that Firewills mods work? thanks so much for your tutorial.

      It depends on what type of Maverick you are using as there are different kinds of mavericks used in Firewills aircraft (They range from B,D,G,H,K and L).
      The B model is TV guided and rarely used, Firewill has his own tutorial on how to use these but they are weak and only work on certain aircraft (125lb)
      The D model is most common and uses Infrared (IR) tracking and as you said if the vehicle is not hot enough then finding a lock will be tricky or if the vehicle deploys IR smoke. (125lb)
      The G model is the same as the D model but it has a larger warhead which means you cant have them in a rack of x3 but these will pretty much guarantee a kill on even the most heavily armoured vehicles. (300lb)
      The H model uses Electro-Optical (EO) tracking which means even if the target vehicle is cold finding a lock will be simple, however it requires the target to be seen clearly and so Electro-Optical is useless at night. (125lb)
      The K model is the same as the H model but has a larger warhead making it pack serious punch against armoured targets but is also useless at night as it uses EO tracking.(300lb)
      The L model is as you guessed laser guided and requires a constant laser lock on the target, unlike the others it does not have a small warhead version.(300lb)
      Those tanks you spawned in Zeus probably were not getting locked as they need time to warm up after being freshly spawned in, however you should find an IR lock after about 30 seconds of their engine being on.
      And as for your last question about mods interfering, unless there are mods that change the FIRAWS system ( which there are currently 0 ) then it should work with any mod. But the AWS only works with Firwills aircraft.

      Yeah double check you're using the correct variant to try and lock on to it.
      Regarding mod compatibility, I'm not aware of any common mods that interfere but obviously you can never say for sure with the range of mods out there :)

    hello! happy new year, just a question, can BluFor and OpFor A.i. pilots use the Firewill AWS planes to dogfight or perform CAS? or do they need a working script to do so?

      As far as they know, air-to-air weapons are AI compatible. I'd expect many of the air-to-ground weapons not to work though.

      @@kevwulf5629 I can't reference any guides sadly, I do most stuff based on personal experience in that regard.
      The AIs dogfighting ability strongly depends on the plane they're given and the loadout. Honestly, the most interesting dogfights I had were using WW2 planes

      @@kevwulf5629 I wasn't aware you were looking for AI vs AI scenarios. I don't have much experience with those to be honest but I'd expect them not to be any good after the missiles are depleted.
      Yes I used Iron Front planes but I also didn't set them up against each other just flew vs AI.

    Yea I got a problem even with only firewills mods on I cant access the loadout menu for the planes with a hemmit or a missile rack

      Okay, let's make sure you meet the following conditions:
      1. Only running CBA_3, firewills AWS and an aircraft mod by firewill
      2. Placed a NATO HEMMT truck next to your aircraft which is not moving, engine off.

    Hello! Forgive me if this is somewhere later in the video, but I was wondering if you knew if when adding custom emblems to your aircraft with AMS in the eden editor, if it is able to be saved after adding the emblems. For example, I open AMS while testing a custom scenario, edit the plane in question, and upon returning to the editor, the emblems are gone. Any ideas?

    What about the BLU-118's, kinda a mini juke. I use GPS system and miss a lot, are they laser? GBU-24 I think they list as on the plane.

      So the BLU designations usually just tell you which warhead it is. That means they tell you about the payload, not the guidance. If its mounted on a GBU-24, then that's a laser guided 2 ton bomb with whatever payload it has mounted.

    Hey quick question, I'm using firewill's f-15E with a LITENING Pod and trying to drop some GBU-12 with the laser target. I cant ever see the little green circle for lining up with my CCP. I tried pressing T and R to switch targets but all it does is show the white box around where my pod is aiming. (Also, it won't lock the laser guided maverick missiles around the white box) My laser is on and I have no GPS targets. Any idea how to get this to work?

      Okay so from what I understand, you're painting a laser target (laser marker ON) for a laser guided bomb. Make sure you use firewills GBU-12, if you run ACE they will rename the vanilla LGBs to GBU-12 as well but they might not work.
      Second, if you're having trouble seeing the green circle have you tried switching into the pilot camera and looking for the white crosshair? It's the same thing.
      Third, LGBs don't lock on anymore (since a few Arma engine updates ago), so don't wait for them to do so. Once your CCIP lines up roughly with the target, drop your ordnance.
      The Maverick thing is a different issue. Which Mav version are you trying?

    I tried to open the AMS for the f16 with a crate next to it. But it`s telling me everythime AWS_AMS is disabled... How can i enable?

      Hi, never had that issue. Have you looked through the addon options? (ESC > Game > Addon options > select AWS from dropdown menu) maybe there is an option to enable it?

      Not sure actually... if it doesn't work for you try the vanilla Jet pilot helmet. If that doesn't work either maybe Firewill updated something and you need to ask him directly on the forums.

      I placed them in Zeus, dragged them up to roughly the same altitude and right clicked my plane to give them a 'destroy' order.

      Technically the AGM-84 Harpoon is intended for targeting enemy Ships and Vessels. So a little bit unconventional to really target Ground vehicles. But there’s plenty more Missiles more suited for your intended target.

    so i tried to play around with the f14 tomcat a little and found the aim 120 amraam x4 (ewp) in the loadout config and selected it but i cant use it for some reason because it doesnt show up when im switching through my weapons?

      I haven't tried this specific constellation but I'd imagine it's the way firewill prevents people from using missiles on aircraft that are not compatible with it. Maybe try the missile on a platform that was actually certified with it?

      - more weapons for EWP"
      so i dont think incompatibility is a problem .. in fact it doesnt show up on any plane when switching through the weapons ... though i couldnt test for the super hornet as i dont have the mod and i cant find it anywhere ...

    We don't use any of his planes anymore because they are just to overpowered. It's not about the great detail of the weapons and systems, but the planes flightmodel is like ace combat. You can literally turn a plane going 800km/h in just 100m or land a plane with 120km/h without stalling it. It is no match for flightmodel provided by the vanilla planes.

      Does ace3 not even it out with Gloc? I mainly use his planes and as long as both sides have his planes i.e. Sus vs tomcats it doesn't feel unfair plus Sam spamming gives ground forces a fighting chance against the a10c never really use the 35b it seems pretty strong in the video but I've found the hornet and f16s to be a lot of fun I mainly just mission editor a sp op 99% of the time so it might be completely different against human targets

      Hi, I don't know anything about mod management on servers sadly. But the "toggle visor" etc options show up regardless of whether you have the mod installed or not afaik

      You have to have the mods loaded on the server AND on the client (firewall aircraft, firewall aws, firewall pilot/crew). In the aircraft, with the engine started, you should see an option for "HMD" (helmet mounted display) on the drop down menu, you'll then have what you're looking for. Good luck!

      If you put down a standard NATO ammo truck next to the plane the menu should pop up once you sit in the cockpit. Most modded ammo trucks are compatible too I think.

    Question about radar: why do vehicles (in air or on ground) not show up on radar until you're right on top of them? Clear line of sight, no obstructions, regardless of missile. AMRAAMs won't lock until you're 4km away from the aircraft, but ocassionally it will target and lock from 12km away. Seems so fussy, for some reason. Please advise, and thank you.

      @@David-ft5mr Yes, sir, I've got it maxed out. But like I said, very inconsistent performance of the radar system. Didn't know if anyone else had this problem. Also, thank you for taking the time to make this video. Really helped improve my game.

      Hi, the mod author has cranked out many updates recently that I couldn't keep track of so I suspect something about the interface has changed.
      Best if you scroll through firewills forum, he usually provides some form of explanation and documentation if he releases new features. Not as well explained as my videos of course ;) but it might help

    Does this mod work with drones? Such as the reaper from cup? And if not do you know how i can change the loudout for drones? (not in the editor) say in like a Liberation mission.

      There's no functional compatibility with drones as far as I know.
      For changing loadouts of any planes, I recommend ACE mod. Just interact with the aircraft and hit "pylon manager". If the option doesn't show up for you, check the settings for pylon manager in ACE settings.

      @@David-ft5mr sure...i have the firewill AWS payload manager you are talking about in this video...but i don't have the aircrafts you are showing in this video...i have the jets DLC pack it comes with arma (A-164 Whipout and F-181 wasp...maybe a fictional version of the A-10 and F-35 respectively) but i don't know If I-TGT module works with these planes...i try to use GPS guided ammo I designate target...but when I go to the list menu pylons don't appear...today I downloaded the firewill eurofighter typhoon...and the same it happened...hope my question has been understood this time...

      I forgot saying I also download another mod that requires having this mod installed...it includes a GPS guided version of the B61 nuclear Bomb and the french missile ASMP...keep in mind I tried to use the GPS guidance just with the B61...but neither appears the GBU-12 pylons in the TGT panel list menu...

      Hey, at which point of the tutorial did you have trouble exactly?
      As I mentioned, the EO missile needs to have clear weather conditions and the paveway 12 can be operated with the "laser guided bombs" section of the video.

      @biologoandrei yes that is how you use laser guided bombs in general. Don't try to lock on the target, just drop the bomb after you locked the camera on the place you want to hit. Does it work for you?

    I am unable to get the SBD Laser to guide on laser or even acknowledge any laser targeting. just GPS. GBU-53 SDB II GPS Laser and Radar guidance 250lbs either are not on the A-10C or are not the same GBU-53 SDB II

      @@David-ft5mr yeah I think I figured it out. It's not the version IIs it's the version Is that are only GPS capable. Which then is weird how RHS through pylon manager can have the IIs on a A-10A.

      @@David-ft5mr basically it doesnt show if its 1s or 2s. and the AMS just shows them as GBU-39 SBD without saying if its x1 or x4 and has the person, light vic icon and GPS laser icon on it. which means its janked somehow on the server im playng on sadly. just cant find any good flying servers these days.

    I keep having a problem! Not with the mod but me just being a noob, when I fire the missiles on my f35 and f22, they for some reason blow up my craft as soon as I fire, Ive tested with my radar off and on and with laser on the target always and my own rockets keep blowing my aircraft up

      My info might be outdated here but I dont know which pylon list you mean in the I-tgt... I dont remember there being a pylon list?
      In any case, the standard answer would be "check if any other mods that you run could break stuff".

      only gps guided munitions will appear in the pylons list so make sure whatever you're packing is gps guided.

      The control can be looked up in the ArmA settings. I think it's Z or something by default but I changed it. You need to be flying a plane that has a radar tho. The A-10 for example doesn't.

      If you still need this, it's called GBU-12 Paveway II. I don't quite remember correct modification, but I'm sure it's one of the paveways II. And it's not actually a 1km kill radius, it has a 350-400m kill radius, and a 800m blast zone.

      @@deficienszestronk7707 The weapon you are thinking of Mk 84, which is a dumb bomb, and can be modified into the GBU-10 Laser guided bomb, or the GBU-31 GPS guided bomb.

    Hey wondering what you do to solve the problem of visual lock in say another mods mig 29, really hard to track ir center my view {especially with no hmd vic} on a bandit or ground threat especially using long range missiles.       I couldn't demonstrate that because its only available on the F-14 but you can use it like the AIM-120 AMRAAM or a similar radar guided missile to my knowledge.

      Long range radar guided missile. You can engage air targets farther out than any other fighter can by quite a bit. I can usually lock something up and fire at or around 20km

    How do you use grid reference

      Grid references are used as follows:
      - The grid coordinates consist of two sets of numbers, for example [341] [215].
      - The first set of numbers is the horizontal coordinate, so read that number along the scales going from left to right on the map.
      - The second set of numbers is the vertial coordinate, you need to read it "from down to up" on the sides of the map.
      - If the coordinates have more than 2 digits per set (-> 4 digits in total), they become more accurate. Each digit divides the grid box into another 10 small boxes, so to speak.
      If you can't grasp the gist of it just by my explanations, it might be worth looking it up. It's not that hard once you watch a little video about it, for example.
      As a general rule, I learned the memory aid "Walk to the tree, then climb up the tree" which tells you to first read the horizontal coordinates (walking on surface) and then the vertical ones (climbing upwards).

      Meaning you don't get the option to open it?
      Make sure you have all the required mods loaded, you're in the correct aircraft and you have an ammo truck near the aircraft.

    You should do a Civil War mod where the United States is succeeded by the northwest coast in Los Angeles and such be it be like the West vs the East and Central East States and have Washington California Oregon be the line until we finally reach the cities
