I had the pleasure of asking Josh Smith, given how loud and dynamic he likes to play, how he manages playing at home. He answered that he has his own studio and goes as loud as he wants. When I asked him what he would advise for people lacking their own studio he said the Ox was the best option hands-down of any load box/attenuator he's used.

I'm sold! This is what I've been waiting for! It combines all the benefits of load boxes. It's reactive so the amp responds like it's plugged into a cabinet, it allows mic models and cab models for live and recording, it attenuates...finally!!
I find it very surprising that some people are assuming that the guys are getting paid and that this is product placement etc. Having watched a truck load of their videos I think it is clear that they are two of the most genuine chaps on TH-cam - I trust them, the integrity of their tone and their integrity as human people. Also I just got my first (and probably last) tube amp and I am on a new journey of my own which is all very exciting.
Watched this yesterday morning, for which, after a week of deliberating over various IR, cab sim attenuator solutions couldn't have been more timely...pulled the trigger on this.. Took me all of 5 mins to have it up and running. At a plug n play level this is great without the need to dig to deep into the muse sapping world of digital trickery( which I can't be arsed with) I think close up and personal the sounds are far more realistic and warmer sounding than how they come across here on video (even though they're still good enough for me to go and buy one). Anyway, I've had to farm one of my kidneys out to pay for it, and I'll be frequenting various other donor outlets for the next six months!! But already I'm declaring this thee best bit of studio gear I have ever purchased :-) x
That’s a ringing endorsement Frank - we wish you many hours of fun with it. Now you mention it, the whole ease of use thing is significant with stuff like this. I get bogged down (Mick here) with menus and screens and options and I know that whatever creativity was there in the first place kind of evaporates if I can’t get a sound quickly. OX feels like it would be quick in that respect, not least that I’m still dealing with my dearly beloved amps. Anyhoo, rambling now. Enjoy!
I got mine last week and it's been a game changer for me. Being able to use my amp and my pedals and get great tone at bedroom level is incredible. Harmonious family life has been restored! The line out and headphone with the cab simulation is mind blowing but it's so easy to tweak. No way would I ever have access to all those cabs and as Dan and Mick said you just lose in inspiring tone. Recording into my DAW is a doddle. You expect it to be good because it's UAD. This is my first bit of their kit and I'm blown away.
mel obrien just take the line out through the PA. If you want to hear the amp on stage you can have that as well. I don’t play live so not something I need but having the option for me to work in such a way was a plus.
Reactive load does make a difference to my ears. I've heard a few different attenuators (apartment dweller here) and by far the Two Notes Torpedo Reload has been the best. The difference with this is the fact that you can load in cabinet simulation straight to the box for recording, monitoring or going straight to a PA at a gig, quite useful. This is definitely something I'd be interested in trying at some point if I get a chance. I'm very happy with my Two Notes and their cabinet impulse suite. It's definitely inuitive and simple to use with it's visual layout, it does remind me a lot of the Ox's suite. I use it the Reload as an attenuator going to my cabinet and record by micing the speaker but going straight into my monitors might be a great choice to have without having to turn on my PC and open a DAW every time... Love the show and as always Rock On...
Glad you guys enjoyed it, from what I'm hearing it really is a step in a new direction with their modelling suite, especially from Universal Audio, absolute geniuses there. If I do get a chance to look at it I certainly will. For shits and giggles if you have time check out Two Notes Wall of Sound plugin or ask Rabea what he thinks of it. I'm very glad that you guys are beginning to cover this area of guitar. For me this stuff (impulse responses, DAWs, DIs, miking, recording, studio anything etc) is baffling. Predominantly because of the recent advancements in the technology, last time I used a DAW was 15 years ago, and any recording since is either a digital 4 track or a phone camera, so at a loss. But there's also the fact that I check out when these things are brought up or anyone begins explaining, just turns into the voice of adults in Charlie Brown cartoons. So this OX box seems like a very useful and relatively simple thing despite having no idea how it works or really what it is and this is my second time watching this. Uphill battle but keep doing videos like this to see if my addled brain can glean any useful information.
Thanks for that Sam. Ever since the advent of the smartphone and tech becoming genuinely part of life rather than a distraction from it, stuff is just so much easier to use. As for OX, it does two things. One: it’s an attenuator so you can drive you amp hard amp but be able to have it at a low volume. Two: it digitally models speakers, mics and physical spaces so you can record direct to a recording machine without the need for any physical mic, speaker cab or room. Hope that helps.
Suppose I should contextualize that a bit, pro audio recording equipment is to me what amp model names are to Dan seemingly. Like Marshall 1987X=Plexi, UA Neve 1176 compressor plug-in app= compression, if that makes any sense. I get the broad strokes but the minutia details don't sink in.
Seriously saving for one of these. Expensive yes, but invaluable, as I see it, for a modern working, Recording musician. This is the middle ground for the big valve, analog guys, who need a solution in Recording and varying volume setups
Hi guys! I've just bumped into a Larry Carlton rig rundown, and found out he has been using the following W/D/W setup for years: he has 2 mics on his dry amp, one for the FOH, and the other to send to his wet effects, that then go stereo to the PA (as he says, just like what happens in the studio). Very easily doable with the OX (or any good speaker sim device).
It is good and has great features. The iPad app is a big plus and the fact that it is a one stop solution. I listened to it with good headphones and at least to my ears there was a clearly noticeable loss in tone from the amp mics to the direct recording. For similar money one gets a Fryette powerstation and a Torpedo CAB that together provide comparable functionality and - at least based on what I heard here - sound better. But I guess the point is that with that emerging technology one finds super convenient solutions to play our beloved tube amps at their sweet spot at home, live or in the studio with no volume or interference issues and that is great. This is a really interesting subject. Digital modeling vs. analog amps. I started playing guitar when i was ten years ago, and my first "amp" was a Line 6 soundcard with some amp modeling software... And at the time it seemed brilliant. If i wanted to jam along to a metal, rock or blues track, i could easily get a sound that was close enough for the ears of an un-schooled 16 year old... And it was cheap! And it worked brilliantly. Because if you've never played through a real amp, digital modeling sounds great! But, when i started to play in a band, and had to get an affordable amp - being a student - and a basic pedalboard - all of the sudden everything got complicated. When i was using the drive channel of my amp and activated my TC Electronic boost pedal - it didn't get any louder! "Why?!" My 20 year old self asked, and i was a big conundrum to me for the longest time (this was before "That Pedal Show" schooled me).... But i got around it, using the clean channel and drive pedals. But it took me a long time to fathom how guitar amps + pedals work.... And music store staff weren't exactly helpful, as they - in my experience - assumed that you knew everything from the beginning. And that is why - long story short - i ended up with a Kemper for my gigging needs. Everything just works straight out of the box. It sounds great mixed in with vocals and backing tracks when we are playing live - and recording for that matter. I can get the sound i want with each tune we play and nobody ever asks you to turn down! Oh, and when you press "boost" - you actually get louder! I know that analog gear is great - i've had the pleasure of playing through a belting Marshall through a 4x12 and it's glorious... But, just the thought of having to manage that thing playing at a wedding or a function gives me the chills... Anyway, end of way too long TH-cam comment... Thanks - once again - for all of the great content you put out! It's always interesting :)

Whenever I've heard fuzz with any kind of digital jiggery pokery going on after it, it's usually sounded like a bit of a buzzy, zingy mess. Then you hear 32:15 .... that was RIGHTEOUS! What a great sounding bit of kit.
Heh - wish this had been last week's show! Literally just bought a Torpedo C.A.B. two days ago to pair with my Fryette Power Station for doing exactly this. Finding the discussion on the limitations of IR is really interesting. IR has always sounded good and very "real" to my ears, but I totally get the point about it not being able to respond dynamically to different amounts of power. Fascinating! Thanks for once more going somewhere unexpected and interesting (and useful!), guys :-) Btw - idea for a show topic (like you need any more :-) ) Power tube distortion - how to get it, how it differs from pre-amp distortion, what kinds of effects work and don't work when the power tubes are really screaming, etc.
Timely. Was researching the Ox after it showed up in a number of places online and at a local guitar shop. I thought “why?” I think I get it now. Not at the top of my acquisitions list, but good to know where and why this is useful. Cheers!
This is nothing short of amazing (digital) tech! The idea is fairly straightforward, but the implementation is impressive. Plus, it sounds so dynamic. The practical (studio) applications seem to be virtually limitless. Side note: I bet this takes shorter time dialing in a usable tone relative to a fully modelled digital rig.
I’m so so tempted by this. I’m not hugely into my recording, but would like to get more so. But it’s so bloody versatile and does so much on top of being an amazing attenuator. It seemed initially expensive for an attenuator but when you delve more into what it can do it’s worth the money. Might have to treat myself 😂
Question: I am building a board (yes!) for the first time. I am building it mostly from making my own pedals. This is for two reasons: I’m a broke high schooler and I want to learn. I still don’t have a ton of money to waste. Now for the question: I’m in love with fuzz faces. I also really like tones from octave fuzzes. As I will be ponying up a few extra dollars for “real” pedals, will a polyphonic octaver (I am thinking the sun and up for price and flexibility through the app) also have the same effect as an octave fuzz if you just run an octave up? I also just want to say that this is my favorite show on TH-cam. I also love that you guys answer my comments every week. It means a lot and brightens my day. Cheers guys!
Erm, kind of, Benjamin. But a traditional octave fuzz is a very different beast than a regular octave pedal. Get a Fulltone Octafuzz. Excellent value and covers both grounds!
A gear nerd as product manager! That'd be the first PM I'd respect, as in my type of business those guys usually turn up with either enthusiastic ideas that fail when facing reality. ;)
According to the PDF manual on UA's site, the attenuation is "Six Steps (dB): 0, 6, 12, 24, 36, ∞ (speaker off)" Up to 36db of attenuation is pretty incredible! Probably make a 100w head very quiet.
Just bought a Two Notes Torpedo Captor (for silent practice at home with the WOS computer plugin). It sounds great. The attenuator function is limited (fixed -20db only). It’s only £200 including the WOS plugin. If I needed cab modelling for live play or a better attenuator this Ox would definitely be worth the extra cash.
Dear Dan & Mick- This humble fan has a humble suggestion for a future show; maybe delve into the most forgotten component of any rig, "Les Speakers". Nobody talks speakers and there is so much to discuss. Wattage, wattage matching with heads cabinet types, cabinet "tuning", impedance mismatching, 10s 12 15s (?), and plenty more topics (i am so ignorant on the subject i cannot even suggest various subtopics). I was thinking of getting some greenbacks and i ran into the 75hz vs 55 hz question, not much info out there on the subject. I know this is the "Pedal Show" but you guys have moved well beyond that moniker. Just an idea
Recently in the Midscooop/push video you tried to make a Fender sound like a Marshall and vice versa. It would be very interresting to see how much they can sound alike with the EQ pedal in the loop of the Fryette Power Station using the same speaker! After all, all a pedal in front does, is alter the guitar signal going into the amp instead of changing the actual amp EQ. Thanks for all the great work!

Sure, I will always prefer to stand in front of a cab, but it’s not always practical or possible... so we thought we’d begin a journey. Now... the amp is still very much in play remember. I love the thing, however it seems in direct conflict with the specific location down the rabbit hole to which TPS has led me: I am running a 4 amp wet/dry/wet rig-one amp on each side with two down the middle. I would need one of these for each amp to really reap the benefits of lower volume recording, me thinks. Knowing that no self-respecting viewer would ever use only one amp at a time, do you have any thoughts or suggestions on integrating the OX for users of multiple amps-short of buying four of them, because who can afford that?
For us, recording is a very different world than live. Personally - Mick here - I tend to only use one amp at a time when recording and create the depth and space with multi-layered parts. Live that’s less possible so the hugeness of two amps really comes to the fore. Perhaps UA will develop a stereo/dual mono version in time, but for now you’re stuck with one amp at a time. Cheers!
Damn! That solves so many space problems at one whack. I have some great stereo amplification and studio monitors - who needs all the cabinets and a great room with the Ox? Certainly not just an enthusiast such as myself. Also, this will cover the whole wet/dry thing as well. I do wish it were based on Android, however. Aside from the Ox, audio quality of TPS, as well as the video, is always top notch - production value is one of the reasons it is my favorite TV show. If UA gear is your choice for your own studio, and if you are truly excited about the Ox, that is a ringing endorsement for me. I've watched your show long enough to know when you are underwhelmed, whelmed or truly impressed.

The fact that it is also a reactive load, not just a resistive load, is huge. And, they carried that philosophy into the modeling end of things. Really, the people at UA have taken two concepts, combined them and seem to have gone for the "best", rather than "that's good enough." For instance, this is a wifi system, rather than bluetooth. I think that sort of attention to detail is worth some price difference. Just for the record, I really do like the Fryette unit as well.
What a great idea to have landed there. Would be crazy good to have a look to some studios, gear etc. Kind of rig rundown in pro studios. And obviously you will have to plug some made of wood instruments : )
Hey That Pedal Show. I have just received my OX. I currently own a Rivera Rock Crusher Recording. I would love to hear your thoughts on those comparisons. I myself will be A/Bing them here in my makeshift amateur recording studio. This OX is my first venture into digital recording before the daw. I had the Kemper for awhile but felt disconnected or as if something was in the way. Mostly the too many option thing and headache giving LCD screen on the kemper & kemper pedal. So I never recorded with it. Anyhow.....love the show!
I've got a Rivera Rockcrusher Recording and I'm just planning to buy a ua ox top box... what do you think? Which are the main tone differences that you found? does it worth the change?
Riccardo Cauli I kept both and like to go back and forth. I like the ox for simplicity of cabinet choice. But love the 11 band on the Rivera. I feel like higher gain amps sound better then cleaner amps through the Rivera in my setup. The OX just works for everything. I found it harder to dial in 100 watt amps over 20 watt amps though. Once you got it.....oh it sounds just like a cab at better volume for playing and mixing through my monitors. Hope this helps. ~cheers

Cheers Christopher. Dan and I keep trying with modelling amps... and we just can’t understand how anybody thinks they bare comparison with the real thing. The gulf is gigantic for us. Now... that’s not to say they’re not useful/good value/practical etc etc. But given the choice, we’d just never use one. So out of interest, what tube amps do you love and play regularly? Cheers!
That Pedal Show right now its a Blackstar club 40. I find the clean channel a great pedal platform and to me is inspiring to play. It also cuts nicely on the rare occasion I get to play with my former band mates. In the past Ive used multiple fender models and Marshalls prior to going with a rack mount rig in the early 90’s when I played locally several nights a week. I still have that MOS Valve driven rack and it still sounds sweet. I do love the smell of old tube amps. Very intoxicating. About 2 years ago I picked up an eleven rack and am amazed with its tone and flexibility. Plus it is also inspiring to play. I have a multitude of great sounding amps, cabinets and effects to choose from depending on my mood. For me, “inspiring “ is what it is all about. Wish I could afford one of those 40watt Victories..... I suspect those are pretty darned inspiring. Looking forward to your next episode!
Definitely looking forward to a comparison between this and the torpedo products. The Ox looks and sounds great but I'm struggling to see why it's twice the price of say a torpedo reload which is a reactive load box with the Wall of Sound Cab/mic sim add in for a DAW to allow great silent recording and a solid state amp to allow the sound of a driven power stage to be played back to the cab at low volumes. I'm not saying anything is better or worse, and if the Ox is worth twice the price, I'll probably buy it (I'm 'that' guy!) - but I would say the Torpedo Reload is one of the best bits of kit I've ever bought.
I do a lot of what is described here with the Fryette Power Station and a Two Notes C.A.B. (Speaker IRs). What I like about my current setup is that the IRs I use match the actual speakers that I use, so I obtain very convincing tones (MY TONE), using actual speakers or speaker IRs - interchangeable. The Ox seems to have more advanced modeling of .... reactive IRs? ... sounds very interesting.
The problem with the OX is that it has to market its price in people who don't know a single thing about guitar gear. This thing models microphones and rooms that need 5 times the asking price to be purchased not to mention the engineering side of things where you would need to know what you're doing. This thing is worth its price for what it offers. If you want something cheaper get the Suhr Reactive Load and a Mooer Radar. This thing makes tube amps sing as most load boxes do.
Very cool product at a reasonable price. I do similar with a Power Station 2 and Helix which isn't really an inexpensive option. I think one could also do similar with a Power Station and Helix FX (HXFX) for about the price of the OX. If you're starting from scratch though, the OX would be a great way to go.
Now that you're getting into this side of things, I would love to see you take a spin on the AxeFx. You could perhaps compare some of its models to the real deals that you own. Maybe you can get Cliff to send you an early AxeFx III even?
(I've just discovered your channel, by the way, and have been obsessively watching your back catalog since. Each of your videos are terrific--including this one. I love how I don't just get exposed to new gear, but I actually learn so much about tone, and instruments, and music as well).
One other idea--a video about the interaction between delay and reverb. I've always been a delay guy, and never thought there was much of a need for reverb because I could just use delay. But especially watching your videos, I'm starting to think that there might be a special magic when you combine both reverb and delay that you can't get from only one or the other. So perhaps a video explaining (or exploring whether) that magic (exists) ?
Hello, and thanks for the comments - welcome aboard! Reverb and delay - there is something very special about the two combined. Not sure we could shed much more light on it than we already do in various videos. As for ‘getting into this side of things’, hold your horses tiger! Cabinet and speaker emulation is one one thing. Whole amps is entirely another. The day we hear a digital amp take pedals like the ‘real’ thing, we’ll start to take them more seriously. As it is, they still stand a long way apart. Cheers!

Great when you dialed the amp back to around 5. Great spot for a deluxe reverb. The front of house stuff is what is most intriguing to me.
I got mine last week and it's been a game changer for me. Being able to use my amp and my pedals and get great tone at bedroom level is incredible. Harmonious family life has been restored! The line out and headphone with the cab simulation is mind blowing but it's so easy to tweak. No way would I ever have access to all those cabs and as Dan and Mick said you just lose in inspiring tone. Recording into my DAW is a doddle. You expect it to be good because it's UAD. This is my first bit of their kit and I'm blown away.

Maybe great for bedroom use, but pointless for live. And I don't like the sound of square waves; pull out the oscilloscope and check it out.
mel obrien just take the line out through the PA. If you want to hear the amp on stage you can have that as well. I don’t play live so not something I need but having the option for me to work in such a way was a plus.

Reactive load does make a difference to my ears. I've heard a few different attenuators (apartment dweller here) and by far the Two Notes Torpedo Reload has been the best. The difference with this is the fact that you can load in cabinet simulation straight to the box for recording, monitoring or going straight to a PA at a gig, quite useful.
This is definitely something I'd be interested in trying at some point if I get a chance. I'm very happy with my Two Notes and their cabinet impulse suite. It's definitely inuitive and simple to use with it's visual layout, it does remind me a lot of the Ox's suite.
I use it the Reload as an attenuator going to my cabinet and record by micing the speaker but going straight into my monitors might be a great choice to have without having to turn on my PC and open a DAW every time... Love the show and as always Rock On...

I'm very glad that you guys are beginning to cover this area of guitar. For me this stuff (impulse responses, DAWs, DIs, miking, recording, studio anything etc) is baffling. Predominantly because of the recent advancements in the technology, last time I used a DAW was 15 years ago, and any recording since is either a digital 4 track or a phone camera, so at a loss. But there's also the fact that I check out when these things are brought up or anyone begins explaining, just turns into the voice of adults in Charlie Brown cartoons. So this OX box seems like a very useful and relatively simple thing despite having no idea how it works or really what it is and this is my second time watching this. Uphill battle but keep doing videos like this to see if my addled brain can glean any useful information.
Thanks for that Sam. Ever since the advent of the smartphone and tech becoming genuinely part of life rather than a distraction from it, stuff is just so much easier to use. As for OX, it does two things. One: it’s an attenuator so you can drive you amp hard amp but be able to have it at a low volume. Two: it digitally models speakers, mics and physical spaces so you can record direct to a recording machine without the need for any physical mic, speaker cab or room. Hope that helps.
Suppose I should contextualize that a bit, pro audio recording equipment is to me what amp model names are to Dan seemingly. Like Marshall 1987X=Plexi, UA Neve 1176 compressor plug-in app= compression, if that makes any sense. I get the broad strokes but the minutia details don't sink in.
Seriously saving for one of these. Expensive yes, but invaluable, as I see it, for a modern working, Recording musician. This is the middle ground for the big valve, analog guys, who need a solution in Recording and varying volume setups

Hi guys! I've just bumped into a Larry Carlton rig rundown, and found out he has been using the following W/D/W setup for years: he has 2 mics on his dry amp, one for the FOH, and the other to send to his wet effects, that then go stereo to the PA (as he says, just like what happens in the studio). Very easily doable with the OX (or any good speaker sim device).
That sounds fantastic, and the uses can be great. I hope to see a bit more from you guys about it.

It is good and has great features. The iPad app is a big plus and the fact that it is a one stop solution. I listened to it with good headphones and at least to my ears there was a clearly noticeable loss in tone from the amp mics to the direct recording. For similar money one gets a Fryette powerstation and a Torpedo CAB that together provide comparable functionality and - at least based on what I heard here - sound better. But I guess the point is that with that emerging technology one finds super convenient solutions to play our beloved tube amps at their sweet spot at home, live or in the studio with no volume or interference issues and that is great. This is a really interesting subject. Digital modeling vs. analog amps.
I started playing guitar when i was ten years ago, and my first "amp" was a Line 6 soundcard with some amp modeling software... And at the time it seemed brilliant. If i wanted to jam along to a metal, rock or blues track, i could easily get a sound that was close enough for the ears of an un-schooled 16 year old... And it was cheap! And it worked brilliantly. Because if you've never played through a real amp, digital modeling sounds great!
But, when i started to play in a band, and had to get an affordable amp - being a student - and a basic pedalboard - all of the sudden everything got complicated. When i was using the drive channel of my amp and activated my TC Electronic boost pedal - it didn't get any louder! "Why?!" My 20 year old self asked, and i was a big conundrum to me for the longest time (this was before "That Pedal Show" schooled me)....
But i got around it, using the clean channel and drive pedals. But it took me a long time to fathom how guitar amps + pedals work.... And music store staff weren't exactly helpful, as they - in my experience - assumed that you knew everything from the beginning.
And that is why - long story short - i ended up with a Kemper for my gigging needs.
Everything just works straight out of the box. It sounds great mixed in with vocals and backing tracks when we are playing live - and recording for that matter.
I can get the sound i want with each tune we play and nobody ever asks you to turn down! Oh, and when you press "boost" - you actually get louder!
I know that analog gear is great - i've had the pleasure of playing through a belting Marshall through a 4x12 and it's glorious... But, just the thought of having to manage that thing playing at a wedding or a function gives me the chills...

Whenever I've heard fuzz with any kind of digital jiggery pokery going on after it, it's usually sounded like a bit of a buzzy, zingy mess.
Then you hear 32:15 .... that was RIGHTEOUS! What a great sounding bit of kit.
Also, I love how there's another Ox in the upper right on top of the Marshall.

Heh - wish this had been last week's show! Literally just bought a Torpedo C.A.B. two days ago to pair with my Fryette Power Station for doing exactly this. Finding the discussion on the limitations of IR is really interesting. IR has always sounded good and very "real" to my ears, but I totally get the point about it not being able to respond dynamically to different amounts of power. Fascinating!

This is nothing short of amazing (digital) tech! The idea is fairly straightforward, but the implementation is impressive. Plus, it sounds so dynamic. The practical (studio) applications seem to be virtually limitless.
Side note: I bet this takes shorter time dialing in a usable tone relative to a fully modelled digital rig.

I’m so so tempted by this. I’m not hugely into my recording, but would like to get more so. But it’s so bloody versatile and does so much on top of being an amazing attenuator. It seemed initially expensive for an attenuator but when you delve more into what it can do it’s worth the money. Might have to treat myself 😂

Question: I am building a board (yes!) for the first time. I am building it mostly from making my own pedals. This is for two reasons: I’m a broke high schooler and I want to learn. I still don’t have a ton of money to waste. Now for the question: I’m in love with fuzz faces. I also really like tones from octave fuzzes. As I will be ponying up a few extra dollars for “real” pedals, will a polyphonic octaver (I am thinking the sun and up for price and flexibility through the app) also have the same effect as an octave fuzz if you just run an octave up?
I also just want to say that this is my favorite show on TH-cam. I also love that you guys answer my comments every week. It means a lot and brightens my day. Cheers guys!
Erm, kind of, Benjamin. But a traditional octave fuzz is a very different beast than a regular octave pedal. Get a Fulltone Octafuzz. Excellent value and covers both grounds!
You could buy a green ringer clone, or build a kit, and stack that with a fuzz

According to the PDF manual on UA's site, the attenuation is "Six Steps (dB): 0, 6, 12, 24, 36, ∞ (speaker off)" Up to 36db of attenuation is pretty incredible! Probably make a 100w head very quiet.
Just bought a Two Notes Torpedo Captor (for silent practice at home with the WOS computer plugin). It sounds great. The attenuator function is limited (fixed -20db only). It’s only £200 including the WOS plugin. If I needed cab modelling for live play or a better attenuator this Ox would definitely be worth the extra cash.
Dear Dan & Mick- This humble fan has a humble suggestion for a future show; maybe delve into the most forgotten component of any rig, "Les Speakers". Nobody talks speakers and there is so much to discuss. Wattage, wattage matching with heads cabinet types, cabinet "tuning", impedance mismatching, 10s 12 15s (?), and plenty more topics (i am so ignorant on the subject i cannot even suggest various subtopics). I was thinking of getting some greenbacks and i ran into the 75hz vs 55 hz question, not much info out there on the subject. I know this is the "Pedal Show" but you guys have moved well beyond that moniker. Just an idea

Recently in the Midscooop/push video you tried to make a Fender sound like a Marshall and vice versa. It would be very interresting to see how much they can sound alike with the EQ pedal in the loop of the Fryette Power Station using the same speaker!
After all, all a pedal in front does, is alter the guitar signal going into the amp instead of changing the actual amp EQ.

Sure, I will always prefer to stand in front of a cab, but it’s not always practical or possible... so we thought we’d begin a journey. Now... the amp is still very much in play remember. We’ll get into all of this in part two, which actually involves some music! Cheers!
I love the thing, however it seems in direct conflict with the specific location down the rabbit hole to which TPS has led me: I am running a 4 amp wet/dry/wet rig-one amp on each side with two down the middle. I would need one of these for each amp to really reap the benefits of lower volume recording, me thinks. Knowing that no self-respecting viewer would ever use only one amp at a time, do you have any thoughts or suggestions on integrating the OX for users of multiple amps-short of buying four of them, because who can afford that?
For us, recording is a very different world than live. Personally - Mick here - I tend to only use one amp at a time when recording and create the depth and space with multi-layered parts. Live that’s less possible so the hugeness of two amps really comes to the fore. Perhaps UA will develop a stereo/dual mono version in time, but for now you’re stuck with one amp at a time. Cheers!

Damn! That solves so many space problems at one whack. I have some great stereo amplification and studio monitors - who needs all the cabinets and a great room with the Ox? Certainly not just an enthusiast such as myself. Also, this will cover the whole wet/dry thing as well. I do wish it were based on Android, however.
Aside from the Ox, audio quality of TPS, as well as the video, is always top notch - production value is one of the reasons it is my favorite TV show. If UA gear is your choice for your own studio, and if you are truly excited about the Ox, that is a ringing endorsement for me. I've watched your show long enough to know when you are underwhelmed, whelmed or truly impressed.

The fact that it is also a reactive load, not just a resistive load, is huge. And, they carried that philosophy into the modeling end of things. Really, the people at UA have taken two concepts, combined them and seem to have gone for the "best", rather than "that's good enough." For instance, this is a wifi system, rather than bluetooth. I think that sort of attention to detail is worth some price difference. Just for the record, I really do like the Fryette unit as well.

Because of the stand alone amplification function, I think the Fryette wins, hands down, in the attenuation category.

Hey That Pedal Show. I have just received my OX. I currently own a Rivera Rock Crusher Recording. I would love to hear your thoughts on those comparisons. I myself will be A/Bing them here in my makeshift amateur recording studio. This OX is my first venture into digital recording before the daw. I had the Kemper for awhile but felt disconnected or as if something was in the way. Mostly the too many option thing and headache giving LCD screen on the kemper & kemper pedal. So I never recorded with it. Anyhow.....love the show!

I've got a Rivera Rockcrusher Recording and I'm just planning to buy a ua ox top box... what do you think? Which are the main tone differences that you found? does it worth the change?
Riccardo Cauli I kept both and like to go back and forth. I like the ox for simplicity of cabinet choice. But love the 11 band on the Rivera. I feel like higher gain amps sound better then cleaner amps through the Rivera in my setup. The OX just works for everything. I found it harder to dial in 100 watt amps over 20 watt amps though. Once you got it.....oh it sounds just like a cab at better volume for playing and mixing through my monitors. Hope this helps. ~cheers

Now... that’s not to say they’re not useful/good value/practical etc etc. But given the choice, we’d just never use one. So out of interest, what tube amps do you love and play regularly? Cheers!
That Pedal Show right now its a Blackstar club 40. I find the clean channel a great pedal platform and to me is inspiring to play. It also cuts nicely on the rare occasion I get to play with my former band mates. In the past Ive used multiple fender models and Marshalls prior to going with a rack mount rig in the early 90’s when I played locally several nights a week. I still have that MOS Valve driven rack and it still sounds sweet. I do love the smell of old tube amps. Very intoxicating.
About 2 years ago I picked up an eleven rack and am amazed with its tone and flexibility. Plus it is also inspiring to play. I have a multitude of great sounding amps, cabinets and effects to choose from depending on my mood.
For me, “inspiring “ is what it is all about.
Wish I could afford one of those 40watt Victories..... I suspect those are pretty darned inspiring.

Definitely looking forward to a comparison between this and the torpedo products. The Ox looks and sounds great but I'm struggling to see why it's twice the price of say a torpedo reload which is a reactive load box with the Wall of Sound Cab/mic sim add in for a DAW to allow great silent recording and a solid state amp to allow the sound of a driven power stage to be played back to the cab at low volumes. I'm not saying anything is better or worse, and if the Ox is worth twice the price, I'll probably buy it (I'm 'that' guy!) - but I would say the Torpedo Reload is one of the best bits of kit I've ever bought.

I do a lot of what is described here with the Fryette Power Station and a Two Notes C.A.B. (Speaker IRs). What I like about my current setup is that the IRs I use match the actual speakers that I use, so I obtain very convincing tones (MY TONE), using actual speakers or speaker IRs - interchangeable. The Ox seems to have more advanced modeling of .... reactive IRs? ... sounds very interesting.
Yeah, UA is claiming their models are better. Can’t really pass judgement on that as we haven’t A/B’d them. But that’s the claim. Cheers!

Ok...now, that's the missing part I was looking for YEARS.
The problem with the OX is that it has to market its price in people who don't know a single thing about guitar gear. This thing models microphones and rooms that need 5 times the asking price to be purchased not to mention the engineering side of things where you would need to know what you're doing. This thing is worth its price for what it offers. If you want something cheaper get the Suhr Reactive Load and a Mooer Radar. This thing makes tube amps sing as most load boxes do.
The line out sounds so good. In some cases better than the miked speakers. Impressive…

Very cool product at a reasonable price. I do similar with a Power Station 2 and Helix which isn't really an inexpensive option. I think one could also do similar with a Power Station and Helix FX (HXFX) for about the price of the OX. If you're starting from scratch though, the OX would be a great way to go.
Man I sure hope UA adds this room, mic and speaker emulation into their amp plugins to replace the current IR stuff.

(I've just discovered your channel, by the way, and have been obsessively watching your back catalog since. Each of your videos are terrific--including this one. I love how I don't just get exposed to new gear, but I actually learn so much about tone, and instruments, and music as well).
One other idea--a video about the interaction between delay and reverb. I've always been a delay guy, and never thought there was much of a need for reverb because I could just use delay. But especially watching your videos, I'm starting to think that there might be a special magic when you combine both reverb and delay that you can't get from only one or the other. So perhaps a video explaining (or exploring whether) that magic (exists) ?
Hello, and thanks for the comments - welcome aboard! Reverb and delay - there is something very special about the two combined. Not sure we could shed much more light on it than we already do in various videos. As for ‘getting into this side of things’, hold your horses tiger! Cabinet and speaker emulation is one one thing. Whole amps is entirely another. The day we hear a digital amp take pedals like the ‘real’ thing, we’ll start to take them more seriously. As it is, they still stand a long way apart. Cheers!
