Wait, you got accepted already?? That's a crazy short waitlist, that's awesome! Enjoy! Tip: make sure you respond to emails ASAP, since it's first come, first serve. ;)
Here's a thrifty note: I was born in 1975, and I am still using the 1971 Electrolux vacuum that my mother used for 25 years and then gave it to me when i set up housekeeping. That thing is a beast.
I bought a Kirby in 1976, cost a fortune but I’m still using it today. I’ve replaced the belt once and the light twice. Taken it in to be cleaned and serviced twice and I use that thing every day. Don’t know if you can kill this thing, 😂
@ That’s how you save money! These new ones are all plastic. The Kirby weighs about 100lbs but it’s all metal. Here’s hoping your Electrolux out lives us both! 🤣
My mom had an Electrolux. I remember using that vacuum as a kid. I liked to vacuum, but my complaint back then was that it was heavy and hard to roll around because it was made of sturdy metal. I don't know when it finally broke, but it was after I was grown & had moved from my parents' home. Mom also had a Hot Spot brand refrigerator. It was 30 years old when it finally died. When Mom told me that the fridge was 30 years old, I questioned her memory, thinking she must be wrong. It couldn't be that old! She asked me how old I was. I said, "Mom, you know I am 30 years old." She replied, "Yes, I do, and that's how I am certain of how old that refrigerator was. We bought it right before I found out I was pregnant with you. I panicked, wondering if we could afford the payments on the new refrigerator with a baby on the way!" My current refrigerator is dying. Plastic shelving has cracked, the door seal doesn't seal well, and the icemaker stopped working. That refrigerator is a well known brand with a good reputation for it's quality products. My refrigerator is only 15 years old. Obviously, manufacturers don't make the quality of appliances as they used to. I would give up all the "bells and whistles" added to the refrigerators today for a basic one that works well and lasts longer. A friend of mine has a fancy refrigerator that's only a few years old. It has ones of those ice & water dispensers in the door (on the outside). She said that it has never worked properly after only a couple of years of use.
@@judybritt6288I avoid the ice makers as you often can't clean some of the parts and they start growing mould. I don't want slime and mould in my ice after a few months of use. Simple is nearly always better.
Congratulations on baby #4! How wonderful! And how lucky for me to wake up to a little "special" gift in the form of a long awaited return of our favorite frugal mama! God bless you and your family during this season and know you have been missed!
I don't think I've told you this, but I love every time you leave a comment. Not only because they're consistently lovely, but also because your little picture icon is almost identical to one a friend of mine had as her Facebook profile picture when she passed away. So not only do I get to read your messages, but think of my friend Bertha every time!
@@Homegrown_Hillary I am so sorry for the loss of your friend, and honored to be a reminder of her. This picture is my grandson and I, a few months after my husband passed away. It reminds me that there is still joy after loss, and life can still be beautiful. Thank you for your sweet comment!
Hillary, I truly laughed out loud at your having enticed your kids into taking apart the vacuum cleaner. LOL indeed! Kids love to help and be involved (wellllll...right up until about 12-13 years of age, when they turn into creatures from another planet). So good to see you back. Merry Christmas and a happy healthy New Year to you and your family.
Lovely news about the new baby! Sending blessings and prayers for his/her safe arrival!! Now, back to business LOL..............We inherited a Shark upright vacuum cleaner and it's terrific! It has a dust canister which is so easy to empty, washable filters, it can be used as an upright or as a smaller more portable unit, it's easy to manoeuvre, the tools store easily on the outside, the cord has 'lugs' to wrap it around which then swivel to allow easy unwinding and most importantly, it has GREAT suction. It's way less than half the price of a top end vacuum cleaner I had which was garbage and a PIA to use by comparison. Haircuts - I get mine cut by students for AUD$8 at a nearby vocational college and I've never walked out unhappy, unlike many salon cuts. The students are well supervised, they focus on proper technique and it costs a fraction of a salon cut. They also have students in their beauty therapy classes who need clients for massages and facials - both an indulgence I would NEVER have in a 'proper' spa and again, SO inexpensive that I can easily say yes when asked, especially as I'm saving so much already. I've cut hubby's hair and beard for years, and he applies my hair colour - no wonder we're so happily married! Some great tips Hilary, and you make it such fun too! Cheers and *MERRY CHRISTMAS* from Sydney Australia! (It's 1 am Christmas morning here)
As somebody who's been buying cheap glasses online for years... you can curve the ears yourself if somebody holds a hair dryer on it to warm it while somebody is bending them. It works every time. 😁
Or you can buy very inexpensive silicon slip on bits that hold your glasses in place. I found these during the mask wearing time ( I am a nurse) and they saved me from losing my glasses every time I looked down.
Also, glad to see you back! I live on a super frugal budget too and I’m so glad that there are others who share about it too! Congratulations on the baby too 🤍
So good to see you today! What a joy you are! I'm probably your grandma's age, but I've always loved watching you. Thank you for the honesty, it was very enlightening. Wishing you many blessings with your growing family, they are so lucky to have a mom like you and they deserve your full attention. I'll be here if and when you make another video, you're worth waiting for.
We got a 6.5 foot tall Christmas tree for free because someone left it on the side of the road. The lights that came attached don't work, but it was a free tree. We had enough lights to make it work.I enjoyed our tree this Christmas.
Yay!!! You are back, at least for a bit. Truly have missed you! So many congratulations on the new lil one! Wishing you and your family a joy-filled, magical year. Take care! Barb
Yay yay yay- happy holiday! Hillary is back and a baby is on the way. Love this channel so much. Bless you and your little fam and keep well. Hooray for everything. X
Merry Christmas! Found you from a comment on Chrissy Horton’s video. Love seeing Catholic moms online and your advice is always so helpful and refreshing! God bless y’all and your little bundle of joy!
So nice to see you back! Costco has fixed my glasses many times at no charge. I haven't purchased my glasses there in years. It must be a member perk. I love Costco.
Here is my latest frugal money saving idea. For years I wore my hair the way you do ALL the time. I then thought, why am I spending money and time on shampoo, conditioner and defrizzing products if I'm just wearing my hair pulled back in a severe manner( because I like to keep it out of my way. I use FAR less styling product and look more put together without spending as much time on it to air dry. Win! Win!
I have had 21 vacuums. Including roomba and the latest dyson. I would recommend a basic oreck with bag for carpet and dyson v15 with the green laser for hardwood❤
SO happy to see you back Hilary! PS I noticed that your glasses need fitting beyond the "boop" factor since you are constantly pushing them up. Walmart will fit them for you for free.
Re vacuums. I haven't purchased one in years. I live in an apartment. We have over 80 people here. Vacuums turn up in the dumpster area ALL the time. People throw them away because they are just filled up. Not hard to fix at all. The one I have now needed the plug replaced. $2.50 at the hardware store.
For vacuums go with Shark brand. I have had 3 in my lifetime and each one lasting 8+ years. They are really great! I love the pet ones the most. If you wait for a black Friday sale, you can get a super great deal! They are a bit expensive but worth every penny!
Hey, I messaged Zenni when I had a poor fit and they helped me warm them and adjust them. Also, a brick and mortar will usually help you fit glasses even if you didn’t buy them there. We’ve done that a few times over the years as well.
Vacuum a Shark navigator we own 2 and our church also uses one. The ones we are is the basic model with just a few tools and hose attachment. We paid $87 for them 9 years ago and still going strong.. the church one is the shark Navigator Rotator so the dust cup section moves side to side to Vacuum under stuff eaiser.. that was about 179 but they all do well! 😊 congratulations on baby 😊
Oh yayyyy!!! So nice to see your shining face again! And congrats on the pregnancy🎉🥰 I've begun a no buy year two months ago and it's opened a whole new way of living to me. I've begun studying the ascetics and saints who sign with such. Learning how to make my lean childhood bloom into a rich adult life. Not rich in things, I mean spiritually. Gosh just so nice to see you!
Love this and congrats on the family addition! Whenever I get something for free, I commit to giving it away for free when I’m done with it. I hate every last item in our lives being so commodified.
You are always worth the wait! You inspired me with your Tightwad Gazette episodes you started to explore it from the library & you were so right! Some of it was dated but there were some really yummy tidbits in those pages.
A couple/few videos into watching this channel, and I'm impressed! Good advice that's very well presented, not wasting the viewer's time to stretch out every detail, and for that, I want to say a huge THANK YOU! After all, time is money, too, right? Or, better: Time is life you don't get back once spent, so please don't waste yours or mine, and Hilary respects all that!
Congratulations 🎉 on your pregnancy! I almost said pterodactyl, which would have been confusing and strange 😅 also Congratulations on all of your savings over the past year! Great job! I also second the Facebook marketplace hack. I recently got a practically new outdoor bench valued at at least $300 for $25 used on Facebook marketplace. Merry Christmas and happy new year! Wishing you and your family all the best.
Usually, you can take glasses not bought at Lenscrafters to Lenscrafters and they'll fit them to your face for no charge. Don't hold me to that. It's been decades since I used LensCrafters, but they used to do that. It's worth a try in my book 😊 Love watching and listening to you!! 🤗
Part of me is so jealous when I hear of people and their 20+ year old machines, since I don’t necessarily have faith that a similar model bought new today would be of the same quality. But I hadn’t even heard of the Kirby brand, so it’s good to have another one to research!
@@Homegrown_Hillary Make that 40+ years. Kirby and Electrolux have been the heavy-duty vacuums for decades, and unless they've been farmed out, I'd bet they're still the premier brands.
So happy to see you back! Congratulations on the new baby coming! My biggest piece of advice is get a pet vacuum even if you don't have indoor pets. I have long hair and so does my daughter. After 40+ years of cutting hair off the roller... I got smart and got the self cutting roller shark pet vacuum! Love it!
I had a spring on my garage door bust - on Christmas eve! I was stuck, with my car in the garage and unable to drive my car. I got a referral for a repairman from a contractor who had done work on my house. His contact came and fixed my garage door that day! I was very surprised that he came on Christmas eve. He told me that garage doors should be oiled regularly and that was why my spring had broken. It made sense, that moving parts need to be oiled, but I hadn't known that. When it was installed, they never told me about regularly oiling those parts. My point is, talk to repairmen and ask questions. You can get information that will save you money in the future, if you do the needed maintenance that will extend the life of necessary items in your home.
Welcome back! Good to see you again. The Shark Rocket Corded Stick is a tough little vacuum and cleans extremely well. I got it on sale for 89.99 at Target (normally $300 but just wait for a good sale). I love that it's small to store, has great suction for pet hair but also picks up cheerios and dry pet food easily) and it has a cord (a 25 foot cord) so no worry about the battery dying.
I've gotten MANY FREE things off Craigslist over the years! People give stuff away all the time. I've kept a list during the year of things I've gotten that I can either eat or use in my house. I'm addition, I try to ride my bike to pick these items up, and not waste expensive gas to drive there (depends on the location and size/weight of the item(s).
Honestly I’ve gone back to buying the inexpensive hoover at Walmart. I figured if it died after a year it was worth the low cost. I was so tired of my sharks and Dyson dying after a few years. I’ve had two cheap hoovers from Walmart. They both last longer than the pricier vacuums. Winning!!!
Tip: You can take those glasses into an America's Best (Im sure other glasses places will do it to, but I've only tried with America's Best), and they will shape them for you. For free. Mine has never asked me if we purchased the glasses there.
I get my glasses on Zenni too (I have a high prescription with lots of bells and whistles, and I can get them there for less than $100 instead of $500 from the eye doctor!). To get them adjusted, I just go to the place where I do my eye exams and ask them to do it. They've never complained!
I just use the hair dryer to warm up the legs of my glasses and then gently bend them into shape. Just the same kinda thing they do in the opticians :)
People often put vacuums at the curb. We don’t consider ourselves very gifted mechanically but about 3-4 times a year we drag one home and get it working like new with just a good cleaning. Carole
If you go to an independent eye glass place they will adjust your glasses for free. In California there’s a place called Sore Eyes they’re happy to get you into the store. Also my sister got her glasses adjusted at Walmart glasses area. Try it.
We have a Dyson vacuum, but we bought it on sale and used gift cards, so we paid less than half the full price. My neighbor has one and she's had it since her oldest was very little, and he's currently 20. Dyson is a good brand and long as you take good care of it, it will last.
Re: eyeglasses. Have you tried dipping the ends in very warm water for a few minutes, and then bending them toward what would be your head? You might be able to bend the ends down, too, sort of around your ear. I have an odd fitting situation, and have watched the gal at my eye doc rub them to warm them before bending. (They also have a machine in the back.) Just a thought. Maybe practice on an old pair first. Congratulations on #4!
Tip: get a heat gun and " lightly" heat the arms to bend them slightly to fit them to your face. The key word here is lightly to much heat and it will melt.
I found your channel and am loving the content. We have 6 kids, homeschool, homestead and live in the northeast on one income. My husband is a blue collar worker so it’s an income “below the poverty line”. We used to do really well but have gotten lax and it’s time to buckle down on our finances. I need inspiration like yours! Do you find the tax implications to be worth joining the review services? I do my own taxes because right now they’re really straight forward but my concern is that valuing all the items and figuring out how to report that- id have to hire an accountant and in the end it would be a money loss 🤔
Sorry! I just found this comment hiding in the spam folder. The tax question was eye opening, and I'd never thought about it! From the quick research I did, if you "earn" more than $600, I'll get an automatically generated 1099 form for the fair market value of the products, and pay taxes on that number. Otherwise, you just self-report whatever number you make below $600 on Schedule C. Looks like you can still do free online taxes with a Schedule C addition, if you meet certain conditions (income level, etc).
The glasses website sounds great, but I save money on prescription glasses by buying children's frames. I'm a small person and adult glasses are always too big. Kid's frames fit perfectly and are umpteen dollars less than adult frames.

Love it!
Oooo I've never heard of a self-cutting roller. The long hair tangle is exactly what was going on when my current one started smelling like smoke 😂
Oh good! Cheerios suction is a key feature I’m looking for 😂
I've gotten MANY FREE things off Craigslist over the years! People give stuff away all the time. I've kept a list during the year of things I've gotten that I can either eat or use in my house. I'm addition, I try to ride my bike to pick these items up, and not waste expensive gas to drive there (depends on the location and size/weight of the item(s).
CONGRATULATIONS!!!! 💕
Aww thanks, Sara! 😊
I missed you!
Congratulations ❤
thank you so much!!
Thank for the tip on the review website!
You have been missed!
On the vacuum note, I have a Shark a d love it 🙂 definitely worth the extra money.
Congratulations on the "soon to come" Baby #4 ❤
I get my glasses on Zenni too (I have a high prescription with lots of bells and whistles, and I can get them there for less than $100 instead of $500 from the eye doctor!). To get them adjusted, I just go to the place where I do my eye exams and ask them to do it. They've never complained!
You can go to any eyeglass store and they can adjust your glasses for your complementary.
dude i LOVE zenni. I've used them for years
I just use the hair dryer to warm up the legs of my glasses and then gently bend them into shape. Just the same kinda thing they do in the opticians :)
People often put vacuums at the curb. We don’t consider ourselves very gifted mechanically but about 3-4 times a year we drag one home and get it working like new with just a good cleaning. Carole
Ooo, I’ll have to start looking! Curb shopping is one of my favorites 😊
@@Homegrown_Hillary mine too. I love finding something that just needs bleaching or mending or gluing or painting. Carole
If you go to an independent eye glass place they will adjust your glasses for free. In California there’s a place called Sore Eyes they’re happy to get you into the store. Also my sister got her glasses adjusted at Walmart glasses area. Try it.
Not even two seconds in and; Yay a Hillary video!! Your hair is looking fantastic also :)
Edit: TWO HILLARY VIDEOS!!!
I highly recommend a Meile vacuum cleaner. We splurged 25 years ago and spent $379 on it and have never regretted a penny of it.
Meile is one of the brands I've heard the best things about, as far as a "buy it for life" type machine you can buy today. Thanks!
We have a Dyson vacuum, but we bought it on sale and used gift cards, so we paid less than half the full price. My neighbor has one and she's had it since her oldest was very little, and he's currently 20. Dyson is a good brand and long as you take good care of it, it will last.
Oh my goodness, congrats on your news! Smooth delivery and many, many congrats to you and your family!
Congratulations 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Re: eyeglasses. Have you tried dipping the ends in very warm water for a few minutes, and then bending them toward what would be your head? You might be able to bend the ends down, too, sort of around your ear. I have an odd fitting situation, and have watched the gal at my eye doc rub them to warm them before bending. (They also have a machine in the back.) Just a thought. Maybe practice on an old pair first. Congratulations on #4!
I'm definitely going to look into a new phone plan. I work from home so I need fast reliable Internet
Tip: get a heat gun and " lightly" heat the arms to bend them slightly to fit them to your face. The key word here is lightly to much heat and it will melt.
SHARK VACUUM 100% that’s all I use.
Shark are the best vacuums
❤️❤️Baby #4❤️❤️
Shark never dies
The glasses website sounds great, but I save money on prescription glasses by buying children's frames. I'm a small person and adult glasses are always too big. Kid's frames fit perfectly and are umpteen dollars less than adult frames.
Now that’s a cool trick! I’ve done that with kids’ shoes, but never thought to try glasses! Great idea.
I’ve done that too. Also but boys socks! Much cheaper than women’s!
@@sharons4611 Never thought of buying boy's socks! I might check that out after my 50 pairs of socks wear out! lol. Thanks for the tip!
Put your qlasses in hot water then take out and slowly bend then they will curve down and stay on better.😊
I live zenni
Don’t forget the set aside the cash income tax for the $200 carpet cleaner
❤
Walmart will adjust your glasses for no charge.
Walmart will fit them to your face without buying them there. I do.
The bitcoin income 😂
