The chain inside will leave marks on the leather
As long as you're not overstuffing the bag with a lot of extremely heavy items, it shouldn't pull hard enough to leave marks. I can see it maybe leaving a mark on lambskin but the regular caviar shouldn't have an issue.

it's a good trick. I did it and it works but the problem is it's too short to wear it cross body now. it's the perfect size to wear it on shoulder but not crossbody

As long as you don’t carry anything too heavy, it should be fine. The clip shortener is definitely another option. Sometimes I loose mine so this method could be useful in a pinch.
